As a band that began as a lark, an excuse to make noise, drink beer, and bash out favorite country covers, the Wacos have more than exceeded expectations. "Militant honky tonk" argues the cover of their third Bloodshot disc, but rather than saviors of country music--as their label and followers will sometimes claim--Mekon ringleader Jon Langford and cohorts really have the soul of rock & roll in mind. The title track, complete with fat horn riff, is one of the catchiest things any insurgent band has recorded. And Langford's deadly serious version of Neil Young's "Revolution Blues" may be the genre's best cover. Country and ragged rock & roll have rarely collided this convincingly or infectiously. --Roy Francis Kasten
