Old Liquidator

The dark-hued Old Liquidator owes a debt to Big Star's Sister Lovers, which, group leader/former Young Fresh Fellow/sometime R.E.M. sideman Scott McCaughey professes is one of his all-time favorite albums. Like Alex Chilton's morose milestone, pretty pop tunes are cluttered with dissonant instrumentation. It's as if McCaughey prepared Baked Alaska for desert, then poured motor oil over the top. As with the Fellows, there are still a few yucks to be had, but grimmer sentiments linger over the proceedings like unpaid bills. --Steven Stolder
