About the Artist
The New York Room is a recording project with roots in 80's goth and new wave music featuring soaring female vocals, inspired lyrics and melody driven compositions. Since their first days, the group has expanded their sound to embrace and blend many genres including dream-pop, trip-hop, jazz, classical, new age, folk and industrial. Obvious influence include artists like the Cocteau Twins and Portishead, though everything from Beethoven to the Velvet Underground has played a part in honing their sound.
Album Description
Courtesan is an infectious blending of darkwave, dream pop and trip-hop featuring the talents of four other-worldly ethereal female vocalists over melodic backdrops and soundscapes with lyrics that could stand alone as poetry. From the Enya like Irish keening on "I Wear Your Ring" to the gritty and aggressive "Cuts Through The Skin (Down to the Bone)," from the shoegazer swirls of "Baby Blue" to the trip-hop jazz-laden "In Spite of Everything," The New York Room provide the soundtrack to the new direction of darkwave music. This latest release showcases the group's many sensibilities, and the nuances the different singers lend to the compositions strengthen the beautiful diversity they spin into an elegant web. Fans of Massive Attack, This Mortal Coil and Enya should enjoy this release.
