Skyward in Triumph

With apologies to Sun Ra, this North Dakota-bred power duo provides ample evidence that bass is the place. Using nothing more than a hyper-charged bass guitar and a thoroughly sternum-shattering drumkit, surname-free pals Mike and Dan plumb the depths of the sonic spectrum without sacrificing an iota of song structure (often a casualty on the duo's previous work). If you can imagine an even more pared-down version of the Melvins--albeit one with more of a pop flair--you'll have a notion of what goes on under the roof of this 'Silo. For those keeping score at home, Beat Happening mainman Calvin Johnson clocks in to provide appropriately low-end vocals on the title track.--David Sprague
