Multi-instrumentalist David Pajo, formerly of Tortoise and Slint, is Aerial M. His solitary recordings cross the former group's eclecticism with the latter's stark austerity. Both factors make this music ripe for remixing; like a Rorschach ink blot, the source material provides numerous opportunities for interpreters of various stripes to find bits of themselves to amplify, and it also leaves each remixer plenty of room to do his thing. Two DJs give radically different perspectives on "Wedding Song #3": ex-UNKLE member Flacco enlivens the tune with percolating synthetic percussion and bubbling synthesizers, while DJ Your Food slices and dices the original into an ethereal swirl bound by a recurring classical guitar figure. The Tied and Tickled Trio decisively transforms its track by layering acoustic instruments to achieve a loungy ambiance. Bundy K. Brown, who was Pajo's predecessor in Tortoise, weaves a broad and moody tapestry by sampling fragments the entire Aerial M catalog. --Bill Meyer
