About the Artist
Liubo Borrisov (laptop), Maja Cerar (violin), and Doug Geers (laptop) had worked on some projects with each other individually at the Columbia Computer Music Center until fate brought all three together in an emergency-incited and completely improvised gig at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York City in 2004. Album Description
Sønreel is an innovative group on the forefront of hybrid, technology-enhanced music making, and MUSIC FOR FISH is their debut recording. The album’s title and aquatic theme—all tracks are named after real or legendary sea creatures or phenomena— signal to listeners that this music has a distinct point of view and a fresh sound, but also an undercurrent of viseral intrigue and playful warping of traditional musical ideas.

Sønreel’s instrumentation—laptop, laptop, and violin—and its core members—Liubo Borissov (Bulgaria), Maja Cerar (Switzerland), and Douglas Geers (USA)--signal the group’s desire to brashly mash musical bits from across time and the globe.

Mixing the spirits of jazz, experimental electronica, and the classical avant-garde, the members of Sønreel cite influences from musicans as varied as Aphex Twin, Iannis Xenakis, and John Coltrane, among others. With this desire for fresh, raw energy in mind, all theworks of MUSIC FOR FISH were compiled from a series of performances during 2004, and all were improvised live to two-track digital files.
