Pigeonhed

If you've ever wondered what a Prince-fronted, techno-nerd- controlled orchestra would sound like--and who hasn't?--Pigeonhed provides all the answers. The elegant, falsetto-prone vocals of Shawn Smith (who has also fronted Satchel and Pearl Jam-spinoff Brad), swoop in and out of the freeform structures erected by studio whiz Steve Fisk, lighting randomly atop bits of movie dialogue, sound effects, and cyber-beats. The ensuing chaos makes for a fascinating listen, but aside from the genuinely soulful "Her," the defiantly Dada bent makes Pigeonhed best suited for folks with a high tolerance for high art and/or those "Magic Eye" picture collections. --David Sprague
