Younger, louder, and snottier than, well, just about anything that preceded them, Pussy Galore came to both bury and praise rock &' roll--and this compilation of early EPs proves they did a pretty good job of blurring the line between the two. Leader Jon Spencer--then fresh out of Ivy League semiotics classes--spat monosyllabic hate-bombs like "Die Bitch," "Dead Meat," and "Shit Rain" into a hail of detuned guitar and scrap-metal percussion. Nowhere in the 28 songs--including a four-tune swath ripped from their full-length copy of Exile on Main Street--is there so much as a moment for the listener to come up for a breath of air. That intensity, coupled with the non-stop sneering derision, makes for an unbelievably exhilarating listen. --David Sprague
