Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat

For a brief and shining moment, the working-class heroes of Minutemen streaked across punk rock's horizon, opening minds, moving butts, and inspiring awe like few of their peers. This 1983 EP might not be one of their better-known releases, but it is chock-a-block with classic spiels that shed light on the instinctive bond between bassist Mike Watt (who checks in with the cutting "I Felt Like a Gringo") and the late guitarist D Boon (whose furious delivery ensures that every listener will feel "Little Man with a Gun in His Hand" deep in his or her gut). True to form, most of the tunes do clock in around a minute, so even if one doesn't strike your fancy, the wait for the next buzz won't be a long one. --David Sprague
