Delongpre

After the inspired post-grunge fuzz of their well-regarded 1995 EP, Mood Enhancer, one can forgive Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland for encouraging Campfire Girls to release these tracks, recorded in 1994 before the band was swept up by Interscope. Unfortunately, Campfire Girls still hadn't come up with the messy howl that would distinguish Enhancer, and Delongpre can only offer an awkward sludge composed mainly of hook-free melodies and muddy song structure. Christian Stone's lyrics and vocals try for an angst-ridden depth but run headlong into the kind of forced sincerity that infected so many bands in grunge's immediate aftermath. Stone and company do show flashes of songwriting ability; "Thought Police" plays with tempo and mood a bit, using a quick, crowd chanting sample to give the song some edge. Mostly, though, only glimpses of the band's growing abilities can be heard. --Matthew Cooke
