FRANCOIS COUPERIN : III Lecons de Ténèbres
In a beautiful place out in the country [CD-single] [Import]

On its own, the Pastels' music has never amounted to anything that inspiring. Apart from the occasional wide-screen melody, the British indie band has remained reliably as safe--and bland--as milk. Here, however, it's a different story. With such enticing names as Stereolab, Mouse On Mars, and Tortoise's John McEntire behind the mixing board, the songs are transformed into dizzying and infectious pop gems. Standout moments arrive courtesy of My Bloody Valentine's makeover of "Cycle" and Cornelius's ambient reading of "Windy Hill." One of the most worthwhile and consistently excellent remix albums in recent memory. --Aidin Vaziri
