Many Coloured Butterflies

About the Artist
This evocative album title a nod to a lyric by psychedelic ensemble the Dukes of Stratosphear comes as close as any other words to pinning down this vibrant albums engaging aesthetic. "The songs feature different colors and moods, but are all involved in some sort of flight or passage," explains Vancouver producer Patrick Dodds, alias THE VERBRILLI SOUND. On the opening "Drum and Bays," breakbeats bubble up through cracks in the asphalt as tiny lights shimmer on the rain-slicked streets of the night city. Jazzy fills flutter down through "Views" like handfuls of confetti falling in slow motion; the playful "Descender" intersperses funky bass and wah-wah guitar sounds with missives from Mars. From the swirling smoke of "Finger Poppin" emerges a sexy house groove that recalls Deee-Lite or Pal Joey in their prime.

These intricate instrumentals are complex but not complicated, heady without prompting head scratching. "Dizney" shifts between a classical ambient sound, reminiscent of Irresistible Force and The Grid, and a jazz-fusion flavor with hints of Miles Davis. "Ive learned that you cant overwork any one piece of gear," he admits, "because that lowers the quality of the sounds coming out of it. But in terms of dynamics and interesting timbres, even quite rich, cinematic sounds, you can run the gamut with that keyboard." Despite the individual character of the twelve tracks, MANY COLOURED BUTTERFLIES flows together easily.

Working with Vancouver nightclub owner and electronic music champion Seren Kahlon, Dodds released the first fruits of his labor in 1997, under the moniker T.S.R.. Early versions of "Drum And Bays" (featured on the Sweet Mother compilation Free Activation Series No. 1) and "Descender" (on Mo Funk Recordings Nordic Trax disc) met with positive response from the public. Over the next three years, Dodds fine-tuned his creative processes as he fashioned the tracks that ultimately formed MANY COLOURED BUTTERFLIES. Although Kahlon and Dodds childhood friend Ian Duke contributed to the recordings, the final product is essentially a one-man show hence the name change.

In real life, Dodds is a devoted husband and father of a one-year-old son. In addition to his various musical pursuits (his non-LP track "Cansada" was recently featured on OM Records OMLOUNGE 3 anthology), he currently works as an elementary school teacher. "A good half of my inspiration comes from just being around those wonderful little beings," he says of his students. Perhaps these children account for much of the imagination and wonder that flourishes throughout MANY COLOURED BUTTERFLIES, but ultimately theres no accounting for every aspect of Patrick Dodds captivating handiwork. It is, quite simply, what it is: THE VERBRILLI SOUND.

Album Description
The Vebrilli Sound is the brainchild of one Pat Dodds aka Don Vebrilli. Formerly known as TSR, Don makes his way by forging a music style representative of labels like Pork Recordings and the artist most associated with, Filla Brazilia. With Many Coloured Butterflies , his debut record on Seattle based Sweet Mother. He gives the music a bit of an edge with beats a little more funky and beats just a tad bit jazzier, making a play for new ears as well as your average electro-friendly enthusiast.

The music is infectious and works wonderfully as dinner music, spliff sharing, or even house cleaning. Yep, house cleaning.

Take flight- pop this in your player and let it take over. We're sure you'll enjoy the trip.
