Each has much to hide, to lie about, but in spite of the hoodwinking, dishonesty, self-consciousness and culture clash, they understand and recognize the subtle truths about life, love and honor. This is a tender and witty tale about early English medieval life. It is also about our own notions and prejudices today and we find our heads nodding in agreement, understanding the characters ploys and motivations.
In addition to wonderfully fleshed out characters, the author paints backgrounds and settings much like an old-master. Set against the rich tapestry of 1074, the story offers the reader delights in all the heady senses and textures of early Saxon and Norman life. It is an atmosphere to savor.
