Veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith has enjoyed a long and storied career in Hollywood, doing standout work in both films and television, and achieving success in a broad range of genres in both. But Goldsmith seems to have an unusual affinity for sci-fi (as witnessed by his inventive scores for Planet of the Apes, Alien, and several installments of the Star Trek franchise), a realm that allows him to exercise his modernist leanings and his considerable skills as an arranger. Logan's Run combines healthy dollops of futuristic synth textures with Goldsmith's haunting orchestral arrangements and gentle melodic sense, evoking a future world that's ominous yet filled with familiar humanity. For his work on writer-director Michael Crichton's Coma, Goldsmith ratchets up his modernism into dramatic overdrive, producing cues of relentless drive and tension--and strangely embroidered with a few passages of late 1970s disco wallpaper. A welcome reissue marred only by its packaging shortcomings. --Jerry McCulley
