Without a Sound

By now it's clear J Mascis has nothing of any great import to say--or mumble, considering his vocal style--about the human condition. As a noise merchant, however, he again exhibits the rare ability to reenergize the standard guitar/bass/drums lineup. No major departures from earlier outings, though juxtaposing the lilting "Outta Hand" with the primal screamer "Grab It" is a neat touch. --Jeff Bateman
