5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Turkey Review.......2001-04-30

Lonely Planet Turkey is excellent. Having lived in Istanbul for 7 months last year, I can assure you that the section on Istanbul is unbeatable by any other guidebook. You should probably realize that the LP Istanbul guidebook does not provide that much more information than LP Turkey. Unless you plan to live in Istanbul, LP Turkey provides more than enough information.

LP Turkey is rather weak in 2 aspects. One is the Turkish Language section. Turkish is not a difficult language to learn but if you can figure out basic pronunciation from 3 micro-sized pages of text, I'd be quite impressed. Consider a pocket sized Turkish-English dictionary, available in bookstores all over Turkey. Or maybe try LP Turkish Phrasebook - I've never seen one myself so I can't comment.

The second weakness in LP Turkey is Eastern Turkey. There is a lack of information on things to see or do, however it's more than enough to travel on. I'm told that the Rough Guide Turkey provides more information on this region (as well as other regions outside of Western Turkey) - don't miss Hasankeyf. Please discard all comments by guidebooks on security threats in the South-East. There hasn't been trouble for over three years and if you manage to visit this region, you'll probably enjoy it the most. I did.

A map of Istanbul can be extremely useful. The Turkish Turism Offices offer maps of Istanbul & Turkey for free (as well as most other cities). They're ok but you're probably better off with something that includes street names for Istanbul. I've never seen a Lonely Planet Map of any city so I don't know how good they are. Most tourist stores in Istanbul sell 'tourist maps of istanbul', for a few $$ it's a good investment.

Also the section on Turkish food is fairly comprehensive. And if you visit Turkey, take LP's advice, DON'T take traveller's cheques. Enjoy.
