Essential Diving Guide for Bonaire.......2007-05-13
Tim totally "Rocks"! This is the most up-to-date, useful, and well laid-out diving guide when going to Bonaire. Tim's descriptions made it very easy to plan dives, especially shore dives (Bonaire has tons of them!). Combined with his great pictures, we felt like we had already visited each site before actually getting there! The only (very minor) discrepancies were on some sites which were classified in the (blue shaded) summaries as "Boat" access, whereas they were described in the text as shore dives also (and we confirmed this while there). We can't wait to try out Tim's guides to other locations. Thanks!
Did the author do any research?.......2007-04-24
If you are looking for nice photos this might be a reason to buy this book, even though some fish are misidentified. If you are looking for a guide to the dive sites of Bonaire you should look elsewhere. For each dive site listed the author includes a heading box to let you know if the dive is a boat dive, shore dive or both. However, at least 8 of these are incorrect. He lists many as boat only when they are in fact shore dives and even lists one site as a shore dive when there is no access from shore unless you go through private property. Other misinformation includes stating that the treatment for stepping on an urchin is CPR until the pain subsides!
Beautiful photography and loaded with information.......2007-01-24
We thoroughly enjoyed reading this guidebook, while on vacation recently in Mexico. Bonaire will be our next stop! Tim Rock is obviously a very accomplished photographer. The photos are beautiful. Each dive site has a description of the shore entry, depths where the best diving is found, commonly seen species, and notes about current, surf, misc hazards, etc. My only suggestions for future editions would be even more photos showing what the entries look like, and more detailed information about how far offshore the reef dropoff or mooring buoys are. Sometimes the description says "it's a long swim out", but I'd like to know what kind of distance we're talking about. And maybe a star rating for the dive sites? I know it's subjective, but it would provide a starting point when trying to pick from so many potential dive sites.

Product Description
In the former cradle of the Mayan empire, Belize is one of the world's top ecotourism destinations. Topside, tropical rainforests are populated by exotic birds, monkeys and wild cats, while offshore lie the world's second-largest barrier reef and three of the Western Hemisphere's four coral atolls. Shallow reefs ring the more than 450 cayes and islets, while towering walls plunge into the sea. More than 400 fish species and a host of corals and invertebrates shelter in the warm Caribbean waters. This book explores 66 of the best dive sites off Belize, with full-color photos throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading names.......2007-02-19
It is a good overview book, but when we got to Belize realized that a lot of the sites that are listed are not called by the same name at all - so hard to determine what sites we had really dived compared to the book. Also it covers a lot of area in Belize (if you are going to Ambergris Caye then maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of the book is useful).
Not so informative..........2007-01-29
This is a fair book, but loads of sites are missing (from this edition at least) and much of the information I expected to find was not in it - particularly the prices and quality of the various diving shops. It is a mere overview of what you find under the sea, with little on how to actually get to that point.
Better than nothing........2007-01-24
While I agree with the previous 2 reviewers. I did find the book helpful as a brief and very general overview of what was available and what there was to see in those dive areas. It put the areas in geographical perspective for me and was a nice addition to the dive briefing. After the dive, the fish ID part was a nice memory jogger for doing my logbook entries.
However, it does not help with planning a dive or a dive trip. You can get more info on that free from websites, magazines and dive tour specialists.
Overall better than nothing if you're into filling out your logbook.
Pointless.......2003-04-03
This book has no discernible value to anyone planning a dive trip to Belize. First, it does not tell you which dive sites are good and which are worth skipping. This makes it difficult to plan your trip, assuming you have limited time and money to spend. The book does not even contain a list of top 5 or 10 recommended sites in the country.
Second, the book has no information on costs or other logistical aspects of a dive trip. For example, it mentions that Dangriga is the departure point for diving certain reefs, but doesn't tell you that there are no dive shops in Dangriga: to do any diving around there, you have to go thru an out-of-town resort, which is highly inconvenient.
Third, the capsule descriptions of 66 specific dive sites -- the heart of the book -- don't tell you anything meaningful and are irrelevant anyway because dive shops, not customers, choose which sites are visited. (Customers can choose which area they want to go to, but the dive shops select the specific sites within that area.)
Finally, although the book was updated in June 2002, it ignores the fact that in October 2001, Hurricane Iris devastated the sourthern diving hub of Placencia. The reefs in this area are heavily damaged and therefore not worth visiting. The failure to update the book to account for this major development can only be explained by bad faith on the part of Lonely Planet, which should be ashamed to have put such a lousy product on the market.
Save your money.......2003-01-05
This book is not worth buying. It provides very little information on specific dive sites. I did not use the book once to make a dive choice during two weeks in Southern Belize. A good dive book for Belize is really needed - it was difficult to locate good dive operators for some areas...but this book was of no value.
It does have some nice pictures and a very basic fish/coral guide in the back.

Book Description
Rising up from their shallow limestone banks, the Turks and Caicos Islands are set like jewels amid warm turquoise waters. Jump in and encounter tropical fish, sea turtles, wild dolphins, sharks, rays and maybe even humpback whales. Descend along bottomless walls lushly covered with corals and sponges. Explore deserted cayes, where the protected rock iguanas thrive. With miles of white-sand beaches, excellent visibility, unspoiled reefs, spectacular walls and abundant marine life, this British Crown Colony is an increasingly popular dive destination, yet it remains peaceful and easy-going. This book describes 44 of the region's best dive sites, with full-color photos throughout.

Lonely Planet Diving & Snorkeling Turks & Caicos.......2003-05-05
I purchased this book after having vacationed in the Turks and Caicos Islands for 10 days, and dived 16 of the dive sites mentioned in the book...some of them twice. The descriptions are very precise, as I was able to compare the authors comments with my own that I recorded in my dive log. It's not the first and only Lonely Planet Diving and Snorkeling Guide that I own, nor will it be the last.

Customer Reviews:
Good advice.......2007-05-28
If there's one thing the Philippines has in abundance, it's water and diving. I picked this guide up to help narrow my selections down, since the amount of spots to go to is simply overwhelming. It helped narrow things down a bit, and from there you head to the divemasters and started hitting the spots one at a time. This book will definitely save you time.
Diving in the Philippines, Details!.......2007-05-02
This book is wonderful. It educates the diver with degree of skill, pros and cons of each site, photos as applicable, and maps. It's a well rounded, informative guide and I recommend it. The maps are not as they could be, but thats why you go out with a group and dive master.
Nice concise guide.......2006-09-20
This book was well laid out and an easy and interesting read. It covers all the main diving areas throughout the Philippines. It gives a brief description of the terrain, difficulty, what you will see and the general conditions you will experience on diving to each location. It also gives tips on traveling to each location, though this could be a little more thorough, due to the difficulty of getting to each site. This book is great if you are planning a dive trip and have no idea which areas to head to. It allowed me to pick certain areas and islands to research further on the internet. It will be a great resource to take to each dive shop when deciding which dives to participate in.
Lacks map of fish. .......2005-09-23
Very good and contains a lot af info. Lacks a map of fish.
It would be nice to have pictures of the fish you are going to see.
The best Diving Guide to the Philippines.......2003-02-14
Well written guide with alot of information and contacts for dive locations throughout the Philippines, well worth the price even if just snokeling. Covers Malapascua in northern Cebu, Southern Leyte, best diving around, and Camiguin plus all the well known sites. Alot of good maps.
