Book Description
Thailand is the Land of Smiles. A grin shows companionship. A laugh shows forgiveness. But what if you need a second-class train ticket from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? Keep smiling - this phrasebook will show you the way.<BR> <BR> <B>DID YOU KNOW?</B><BR> When people talk about the Thai language they are really referring to a Central Thai dialect that has succeeded in becoming the standard official language for the whole country. For this reason Thai is only spoken as a first language in the central provinces of the nation. As Thai is the official language of education, government and media it's basically understood from North to South although recent estimates suggest that less than half the population of Thailand speak and understand Thai fluently.
Customer Reviews:
Pocket Perfect.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent phrase book, easy to carry, easy to read and broken into easy to find section. Combined with a short language program this book carried me across Thailand comfortably. I mentione the language program because the pronunciation is a bit tricky to break down phonetically, altho Lonely Planet does a great job of it. I have used lonely planet phrase books for all of Asia and Northern Africa, but I must admit I use Rick Steve's phrase books for European travel. Lonely Planet Guide Books are also very good, especially for the bargain traveler.
Great.......2007-04-10
This book has several great features.
-It is small and easy to fit in a pocket, bag etc.
-It has the words written out in thai. Without hearing and practicing pronunciation I find it very hard to get the tones and accent right. When people give me a blank look I can just point. VERY helpful. Especially considering that Thai words written in the roman alphabet make no sense to Thai people.
-It covers all sorts of situations. Basic travel needs like getting around, buying things, to dealing with medical problems, and even to pick-up lines
-some of the situations are so absurd (in that the average person would know a lot more thai or be dealing with an english speaker before that would happen) that it makes a great conversation piece hanging around the hostel. "Oh, yeah, well I know how to say 'don't worry, it happens to lots of guys. Beat that!'
If you're not looking to actually learn thai, but just want some help getting around and trying not to be the Ugly American, then I recommend this book.
easy to use.......2007-03-31
I bought this book because it's small and you can carry it with you on your trips. it's easy to use and understand as well. great book if you're just vacationing and want to learn enough to get around the country.
Excellent!.......2007-03-28
The best part about this book is the pronunciation guide. Thai can be tricky with all the tones, this book made it very simple to understand. If anything the sex and drug sections can just be for entertainment. I tried out these phrases just for fun, never seriously used them. Good for a laugh. Several Thai people have asked me to send them a copy.
SOCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE !!!.......2006-10-02
This book has a section called "What's your poison" which gives translations for several illegal drugs. It also describes how to ask for a clean syringe. Drugs are illegal in Thailand, but this book helps to promote their use by providing these translations.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful little book.......2007-05-15
Besides my Lao Dictionary, this is *the* Lao book I carry around daily with me. I wish I could post a photo of my worn out dog-eared copy. I agree w/ the one reviewer who said the transliteration is a little wacky, however the Lao script is generally "spot on". (I'll mention transliteration with Lao is a less than exact science) It's one of the few if only books outside of the books attempting to teach Lao that handle things like Grammar.. very handy for the traveler. It also throws some Lao culture in for good measure to make sure you don't do something offensive to the local people. Great book, worth the money and besides... it's so small you can fit it in your pack/bag pretty easy.
transliteration makes lao even more complex than it is.......2003-12-04
The Lonely Planet phrasebooks are usually a great help travelling around the world. This one however turned out to be creating more problems than solving them. The transliteration is so weird that you actually have to learn two new languages before pronouncing anything closely right. I tried the book with several english speaking lao persons and lao speaking native english speakers while travelling around the country and all had problems with the transliteration. Nothing is like you would naturally pronounce it. For example who would say Khoj if you see Khawy?
Helpful is the lao bit so you can point, in the end its how I got around. A pity, there are much better transliterations around.
Lao Phrasebook.......2002-03-04
Very good book, especially for someone that don't understand a lot of English. They could always use as reference anywhere they go. Again, good book and excellent choice for someone who wants
to learn English. [reasonable] price and great book, what can I say.
Nifty little phrasebook.......2001-02-16
The Lonely Planet phrasebooks have come a long way since the days when the foreign script portion was merely hand-written in the space beside the romanized portion. The Lao phrasebook is representative of that new generation, and it is pretty impressive. Along with all the usual categories of phrases one would expect to see (greetings, directions, lodging, food, shopping, health, numbers, dates, emergencies, etc.), the splendidly informative introduction provides an interesting background on the spoken language and script, followed by a great section on pronunciation and grammar. There are interesting cultural notes dispersed throughout the book, and a vocabulary list at the end. Its compact size makes it ideal to carry in one's pocket. On the down side the marking system used in the romanized portion to indicate Lao tones is a little confusing and under-explained, but all-in-all a great little phrasebook.
It's a very through pocket book that can guide you in Laos.......1999-02-12
This is an excellent book for those who wish to travel to Laos, or even those who wish to begin learning lao in small steps. I purchased this book in order to learn the language at a quicker and more simplified pace. It contains not only basic phrases that one might need to know in order to conduct ones self in the main parts of Laos but also be able to learn some of the country's culture as well. Even though studying an entirely new language can be laborious, Mr. Cummings has made it easy for anyone to be bilingual, even multi-lingual.

Customer Reviews:
"Where is the toilet" is in the book.......2005-12-01
The reviewer who complained that they could not find the phrase "where is the toilet" in this phrasebook was not trying very hard. For every language, it is either present in the section "Around Town" under the question heading "Where is the ...", or else it can easily be created by combining that half question with the word for "toilet", found in the immediately preceding section, "Useful Words". One small annoyance is that the tone key in the Vietnamese section shows the tonal contours, but does not key them to the accent marks. However, the Quick Reference Vietnamese chart on the last page does give this information. Overall, the book is a handy compendium of phrases for eight different languages, and includes a modicum of cultural hints. No space is available for brief grammars or dictionaries, but if these are desired, the reader can purchase separate Lonely Planet phrasebooks for any of the individual languages.
Where is the toilet?.......2005-03-31
This book reviews a number of South-East Asian langauges. Overall the layout is understandable. The overview of tones in each language (there are a few tonal languages in the region) is handled well, and the pronounciation is good enough that you can be understood when you try to speak the sentences.
The book falls short in what it decides to translate. We found out, to our dismay, that the phrase, "where is the toilet?" was not to be found. This is the primary reason for the low rating. The first words presented in the chapter are basic introductions, which are good. However there are some emergency phrases that should be placed better. "Where is the pharmacy?" is a phrase that was cleverly hidden in the text.
Hopefully these issues will be cleared up by the second edition. I would recommend against using this book as it stands now as your only reference when travelling.

Customer Reviews:
An interesting little reference book.......2006-04-26
With conversational Indonesian being quite simple, I was able to get a lot out of this little book. I used this book exclusively for about 3 weeks before travelling to Indonesia, and by the time I arrived I could produce simple sentences for travel purposes. The book doesn't provide you with any organized method of learning, but it does contain a grammar section that covers the basics, and after studying that section you can deduce a lot from the example sentences throughout the book. I tried to practice making new sentences by substituting words into the sentences given.
The topics are relevant to travel and basic conversation, and the example sentences are appropriate. I've also found the table of contents and glossary very easy to use, and they help me rapidly find the section I'm looking for. It's a well organized little reference book and I still use it even though I've continued my studies beyond the phrasebook level.
How can a small book like this contain so much?.......2005-03-07
How can a small book like this contain so much (that is actually useful)?
Amazing! This book doesn't teach you Indonesian, and that's not the purpose of the book either, but it goes very far in almost doing so.
I have an Indonesian friend, and she was impressed with the number of everyday and not so everyday situations covered in the book, besides being written by someone who really knows this foreign turf.
I can attest to the nearly indestructible cover. And it is small enough to fit in most shirt pockets.
If you already know some basic knowledge and/or understanding of Indonesian, this book will be of great help.
New and Improved.......2004-01-24
I was in Indo. recently and took with me an older version of this book, about 15 years older. It was less than half the size and was lacking in every way. There were even pagination mistakes. Anyway, enough about that.
I have a virtual library of LP phrasebooks and they are all good, which is more than I can say for their guidebooks, which vary tremendously in quality. LP phrasebooks are always more complete, better organized, and offer more important grammatical and clutural information than any other series. "Indonesian Phrasebook" is no exception.
Everything is easy to find, as long as it's in the book. It's also a nice size, has an attractive and indestructible cover and binding, and uses lots of fonts for ease of reading and information boxes about all kinds of stuff. I offers five sentences for gay travelers but only a page and a half on dating and romance. That's more than the Thai version, but the Latin American Spanish one puts it to shame with four pages. I guess they are just being culturally sensitive and don't want to turn a bunch of college students lose with too much? the first page of Dating and Romance gives you - You're beautiful. You're sexy, Let's make love. Do you have a condom? Out of this world! Can I stay? I'll call you. Do you want to be my girlfriend? and a few others. The next page then gives you four ways to say dammit! and then I leave tomorrow, I'll miss you, Let's keep in touch, and This relationship isn't appropriate. And that's it. Pretty lame, I thought. Where's all the sweet talk while you're spending time with him/her? I took off a star for that. Still, it's the best phrasebook there is.
A pretty good phrasebook.......2001-12-09
If you are going to Indonesia and you feel you need a language guide, but you are not inclined to study the language by means of a graduated text book, you might like to consider this. You do get a very limited section on how the language works (ie grammar) but not enough to be really useful. What you do get of great value are subject grouped word lists and phrases that even include some of the colloquial language that you will encounter whilst on your travels.
However, I believe that this little book grows in usefulness if you are studying/have studied the basic language and you need something to enlarge your vocabulary and boost your communication power in Bahasa Indonesia. The word lists can be a great help in filling in the gaps that some basic courses might necessarily have left in vocaublary while aiming to teach you to use the structures of the language. In this way, this phrasebook can be very useful.
An Indonesian friend of mine who saw the cultural information in the book said that the author has definitely spent a lot of time in the country and has really done his homework! Some language courses completely neglect cultural information while they are concentrating on language (such as "Colloquial Indonesian" by Routledge) so in addition to the extra vocabulary, the cultural inforamtion you find here could really make a difference to your trip, as it is very easy for an unsuspecting westerner to make cultural gaffs and end up looking "sombong".
In short, if you just want a travel phrasebook and cultural guide, then this is a good choice.

Customer Reviews:
a wonderful, eye-opening little book.......2000-10-08
I bought this book because of its lingustic interest. Material about Lisu, Lahu, Hmong, Akha, Mien, (et al) is very hard to come by. Ordinarily I would anathematize all phrase books, but this gives a lot of detailed information about these languages, including their structure and pronunciation, that is nearly impossible to find anywhere else. The author's presentation is very clear, and included also is some information about the peoples and the cultures of this little-known place. It actually made me want to go there.
