Customer Reviews:
Satisfied customer.......2007-01-20
This book was very useful. It is laid out well and has detailed information about what you needed to know to get around in Korea.
Poorly organized and not very handy.......2006-03-17
If your looking for an easy-reference, traveler's phrasebook...this certainly isnt for you. Buying this as a quick-reference guide to help me get through Korea for 2 weeks, I was rather dissapointed that all the phrases are kind of scattered throughout the book, while the whole first half is dedicated to grammar. If I wanted to actually learn the language, I'd have bought a text book, not a "phrase" book. At any rate, the organization of the book certainly made it hard to find what I was looking for when I needed it. And, while everything else is over descriptive, theres a very frustratingly small amount of info on numbers. They go into a lot of depth about the etimology of the numbers, but say only a few word on when to use what(i.e. these numbers are used over 100....well, how do I say 11,225...do I use all "Sino-korean" or do I mix in "Pure Korean">) In a country whose currency is set up such that few things cost lower than 1,000 won, a bit more explanation on numbers over 100 would be appreciated...and the "Quick Reference" number guide on the inside-back cover, since it only goes up to 100, is entirely worthless. Oh well, I guess I should've know since it's Lonely Planet.
excellent.......2005-11-04
This book is huge. LP korean phrasebook has everything you need and then some. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the language, studying it, or just looking for something to brush up on. Thanks amazon for the fast shipping.
Very good pronounciation and grammar tips!.......2005-03-08
While this title is not mainly a Korean /language/ title, or a book one expects to learn in depth language nicities, nonetheless, the book does an amazing job of condensing these minutiae very quickly, accurately, and somewhat completely (at a begginer level of course), in very clear language, without any weird linguist smarty pants fancy grammar jargon.
This is the intro. The rest of the book follows the content and layout of similar titles, and is fairly useful for the beginner.
Could do better.......2004-03-01
The Lonely Planet(LP) Korean phrase book contains all the things you would expect from it. Unlike other phrase books the LP book has a great introduction to the language with a brief but useful grammar section. LP phrase books always seem to be much more than just a phrase book.
However the grammar section only contains the romanisation of Korean rather than using the Korean script, Hangul. I think this would be a simple but very effective addition to the book.
Also I must say that one of the most useful and often entertaining parts of other LP phrase books I own(German and Italian) has been the "dating and romance" section. This section of the Korean book is neither useful nor entertaining. It is simply far too conservative. I assume it has been kept in line with the old confusion traditions of the country, but Korean is now a modern westernised country and far more open and liberal than in the past. It would be nice for LP to reflect this in the subject matter of their phrase book.

Lonely Planet Pakistan & the Karakoram Highway.......2007-04-11
Lonely Planet Guide is the bible of all backpackers. Once again I would not travel without this addition for Pakistan.
Great book for a great country.......2005-12-24
Pakistan is among the tourism world's best kept secrets, and this book throws open those secrets very well. Lonely Planet has always been good with detail and comprehensive coverage, and that trend continues with its coverage on Pakistan.
Without the off-the-beaten track records, I would have missed some of the greatest historical and cultural artifacts that Pakistan has to offer. And the guide truly works as you trek up north into Pakistan's majestic mountains that offer the most mind-blowing natural beauty - even India's Kashmir area is nothing compared to the rugged and untouched beaty of the Swat River Valley all the way to whitewater rafting areas in Gilgit.
So when you head to Pakistan, definitely take this book along.
Wonderful details and descriptions.......2005-11-28
I found this book very helpful in getting to know this exotic country, full of adventure and culture.
I recommend this book highly to folks who want to know about the indus valley culture and Pakistan.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide To Pakistan.......2003-08-18
It gives you an insight into the history and the people of Pakistan, as well as everything a tourist should know, i.e. cheap places too stay, what to eat, how to travel, the local customs, etc. And, by the way, there's nothing wrong with the map, though perceptions may differ as to which part(s) of Kashmir are free & democratic and which are not.
Good Text, Wrong Map.......2003-03-19
The book is written very well. Gives all the information a traveller could possibly use. The only thing wrong with is the map of Pakistan and Kashmir. Kashmir is shown to be a part of India which is totally wrong. One part of Kashmir - Azad Kashmir is independant whereas the other half is occupied by India. The map of Kashmir should be corrected to earn the fifth star.
Lonely Planet: Informative & Thorough (As Always).......2002-07-27
Without bringing my political affiliations and leanings into this review (...), I can safely vouch for this travel guide to Pakistan. Informative, thorough, honest and highly enjoyable, Lonely Planet has come through again! I utilized their travel books throughout my recent trip to India and Pakistan and was never led wrong (infact they have saved my behind a few times, especially in Pak), but overall enhanced my experience as they encouraged me to try new and different things while there and also gave me some pointers on how to interact with the locals. One negative point to mention: Lonely Planet Pakistan doesn't stress and/or inform about the heckling, whistling, and unwanted male attention foreign girls (even those who are of Indian origin) have to suffer through, enough.
Confused.......2002-04-11
...Primarily, the Map is wrong. Azad Kashmir is such a beautiful part of Pakistan, and they cokmpletely miss it. They go on to show that Entire Kashmir is a part of india.
The book is also missing insiders scoop. Perhaps just using this book aas a reference, and Using other guide would be better. The authors also give a fake image of Pakistans politics, and its intolerance, as a matter of fact its very tolerant...As long as you aren't calling for trouble, you're all right!
Mistakes!!!!.......2002-01-27
Well, I have not read this book yet. I was thinking of buying it but I saw two crucial mistakes on this site alone. The map of Pakistan shown on the back cover is wrong, Kashmir is shown as part of India which is absolutely wrong. Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed area according to UN. one-third of Kashmir is under Pakistani control and even it is shown under Indian map. Second, the historic Badshahi Mosque in Lahore is called the Lahore fort. To me, these two mistakes in only a few pages shown on this site is a big turn-off, so I'm skeptical of the research and knowledge of the authors.

One of the most remote parts of the world, but well worth it.......2000-11-16
I recently completed a trip across the length of the Karakoram highway, and found this guide book excellent. It provided a lot of useful background on the different people and cultures whom we encountered, and had great information on the various towns and villages along the way. It was particularly helpful to have the phrasebook section at the back with all the different languages of the region. This is a wonderful part of the world to visit, but not the easiest to travel in, so a book like this makes all the difference.
Extremely Helpful.......1999-05-13
I reviewed several guidebooks on Pakistan before selecting this one. Lonely Planet is the best. It has the most detail information for travellers. Looking for a guesthouse, a motel, or a hotel in every corner of Pakistan, its in there. Travelling accross the country? Want to know how to make travel arrangement? Its all in there. Most importantly the prices are there. From the Arabian Coast to the borders of China, Iran and India this book is a traveller's survival kit; it all you need for you trip to Pakistan.
Born in Guyana and living in the USA, I decided to visit Pakistan in 1994. I was able to make my travel plans based on this guidebook. Its detail map was of great help. Where to stay, where to eat, what to buy, what to see and travel tips are all there. From this book I was able to get an accurate idea of how I should budget.
Using Lonely planet, I visited Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Taxila, Mardan, Peshawar, Saidu Sharif, Bahrain, Kalam (SWAT IS BEATIFUL), Muree, Abbotabad, Kaghan, Naran and Kashmir. My trip was a success thank to Lonely Planet. This guidebook is worth purchasing. Now that I am plannig to return to Pakistan I have purchased the 5th edition as I plan to visit Gilgit, Quetta, Chitral, Iran and India.
Karakoram Highway,The High Road to China.......1998-10-01
I bought this book and just went through it. Actually I wanted to visit the Northern Areas of Pakistan and after reading this book I felt that I have visited the areas which even I have'nt heard about. If someone is planning to travel through Pakistan or China(Karakoram Highway)one should have read it to enjoy the travel throughly.
