Customer Reviews:
Excellent Quick Reference.......2006-07-15
An excellent quick reference for all your travel language necessities in Europe. And it's a handy little size too.
Minority languages.......2005-06-15
it is great to see the smaller langauges of Europe in this guide!!
WE DO EXIST REMEMBER!!
Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Basque and Catalan take their positions as European languages of note!
All BRITISH and SPANISH people should know some words in THEIR lesser used languages! Otherwise they are not really British/Spanish!!!
Even covers Welsh! .......2005-03-18
If you plan to travel all over Europe, this book may get you through and save the time and trouble of carrying a different phrasebook for each country. It is small, just slightly larger than the average palm and full of basic phrases.
It doesn't cover every language but DOES include Basque, Catalan, Welsh, Spanish, Turkish, Italian, Dutch, French, German and a wealth of others.
WHat I especially liked:
1. The tips on how to break the ice in each country and join in conversations
2.Menu decoders and suggestions for each country
3.Essential words to get you through transportation checkpoints and on your way
4. Some of the basic sports and festivals in each country.
5. Written FOR the traveler with a strong emphasis on the most essential situations when a phrasebook might be needed.
compact comprehensivephrasebook with pronunciation.......2002-07-12
This book has several advantages over other phrasebooks:
* Its got most of Europe (except Eastern) covered, including Irish!
* It is small - about the size of two decks of cards.
* It has the english phrase, the phrase in the translated language and then in blue how you actually pronounce the phrase. The pronunciations are spot on - the best thing about this book.
* It has phrases on absolutely everything - I even got to use my Greek phrase for "I would not like it extracted please" when I spoke to a greek student at the Oktoberfest who was studying dentistry. Everything's covered: getting on buses, going to the laundromat, getting directions, etc. About 20 pages on each language with everything that you will need to get by for a while.
* It's cheap and all in one book.
* A must have for anybody going to Europe who doesn't speak all their languages - I think that's everyone.
Very Useful but Missed out on Eastern Europe.......2001-12-14
This book is a useful guidebook to many languages of Europe, however some of the omissions are a bit strange; It includes Catalan and Basque but not Eastern European, or Scandinavian languages. It's convenience lies in being able to look up the same phrases for different languages.
I suspect it covers a lot of material from other Lonely Planet Phrasebooks, such as the Spanish one, just not as comprehensively.

Customer Reviews:
Not helpful.......2007-04-21
I bought this book figuring that Lonely Planet would have a relatively savvy and useful language phrasebook. However, this is a fairly poor guide to speaking basic German - I took it with me on my first trip to Germany and found this book to be confusingly organized when I wanted to find correct phrases in a hurry. In fact, there were one or two instances where I believe it taught me incorrect contextual usage. Look elsewhere.
Limited use if you speak basic German.......2005-07-16
The lonely planet German phrase book is well designed for a pocket sized two-way dictionary, but in my past three trips to Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, I only pulled out the book on a few occasions. In fact, I've made more use of the dictionary while in international chat-rooms and trying to type basic German phrases.
The book is divided into some nice subject areas: practical (which includes travel and shopping phrases), social, food, and safe travel (which is more of an emergency section). I've made the most use of the food and social sections. I think most people traveling to German speaking countries will want to invest in a German language CD and learn your basic travel and shopping phrases from an audio program. German is pretty easy to learn for a native English speaker. However, having an extensive food dictionary on hand is a good idea when you are trying to order something other than "bier" or "bratwurst". (Of course, you should still treat yourself to German beer and bratwurst -- it is amazing!)
However, I still found the book to be of limited use, for two reasons: (1) despite the color coded subject areas, when I've really needed vocabulary fast, hunting through the book is still awkward, and (2) many German speakers can understand some amount of English. While I do like this book, I've found that I've not really needed it (I had two years of German as a kid). I carried my book in my small book bag, but never in my pocket. However, if you do not speak basic German, I'd recommend buying a copy of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Good little book.......2004-12-11
This book is small and compact and had plenty of travel type words and phrases in it. Though some of the words and phrases are ones I would never use, I know that would be true of any phrase book. The good is it is small and easy to use. The bad is I didn't feel some of the phrases and words for traveling were that useful. For example "what's the next station?" if you can't figure that one out then you shouldn't be traveling. A better phrase would be "what's the next stop" then it would apply to all forms of travel, bus, train and metro and would be more helpful.

Lonely Planet takes the fear out of travel and the dread out of German. Like all their foreign language titles, the German phrasebook is klein, hilfreich und billig (small, helpful, and inexpensive). The editors tackle German grammar in 30 easy pages, but you needn't sweat it if the mere mention of past participles makes you cringe. There are pages and pages of learnable, speakable phrases to enable you to get help at the hotel, ease your way around the market, and let you babble in the beer garden. There are chapters on chitchat and transportation, jargon for health and politics, and a beefy chapter devoted to food (from a variety of wursts to finding vegetarian cuisine) and drink--beer, wine, and nonalcoholic beverages. With vocabulary for business and religion, camping and clothing, family roots and finding a job, this phrasebook loosens the tongue and lets you make the connections your trip is about. --Stephanie Gold
Customer Reviews:
A comedy of errors.......2003-04-16
After I had bought this book and set about seriously reading it, I discovered too many errors. At first I thought I had not remembered my high school German, but after checking dictionaries I realized this guide book was very flawed with incorrect translations. It reminded me of the Monty Python sketch with the Hungarian tourist and his Hungarian-English phrasebook: "Oh my nipples explode...." When I went on my European vacation I didn't take this guide along.
Great content, too many typos.......2001-10-24
If you learned German in high school or college and know the vocab and grammar but don't know how to find a cigarette or a club (without sounding stupid), go ahead and buy this book. It will provide phrases that you never learned in high school but will be invaluable while you're traveling around German-speaking countries, especially if you're young and hip. If you don't already know German, buy something with fewer typos. There must be a typo on every 4th or 5th page in this book. (Although I haven't actually counted.)
Two notable phrases from this book:
"Where can I find lesbian club?"
"I'm still a groupie after all these years."
Great for casual speakers.......2001-02-03
The study of the German language is a personal hobby of mine, though I have never received any formal education on the subject. For any casual speaker of Deutsch, like myself, this phrasebook should prove to be invaluable. While it does contain numerous errors, the sheer volume of material covered easily offsets the book's grammatical oversights. For the price, it provides what I consider to be an impressive level of immersion, especially for those of us who have never had the chance to visit Germany or Austria.
Lonely Planet German Phrasebook.......2000-05-27
This is one of the hippest, most up-to-date German phrasebooks on the market...which is unfortunate, because it also contains more errors than any other book written by Germans about the German language that I've ever seen (and I've seen plenty). Typos (p.47: 'reffen' for 'treffen'), mismatched paradigms (p.41: 'to have' used for 'to be'), mismatched phrases (p.68: 'with child/pensioner' confused with 'concession'), factual errors (p.50: 'ab' called a preposition; p.51:'anstatt' and 'trotz' listed as acc./dat. prepositions), uncorrected computer glitches (p.36-38: 'ibt' and 'ebt' for 'isst' and 'esst'; 'wei' for 'weiss') and organizational gaffes (a footnote on p.62 referring you to p.62) are just a few examples. There are also misleading definitions due to the differences between British and American English: A 'chemist' is defined as a 'Drogist', which is fine if he works in a British drugstore, but a chemical scientist is a 'Chemiker/in'.
I caught about 46 such errors. On the other hand, the book is more fun to read than the typical phrasebook and has all the useful cultural info and quirky personal insights that mark the Lonely Planet series. Still, when there are so many minor flaws, you've got to wonder about the whole product.
Bottom line: I'd recommend it only if you can have a qualified German teacher proofread it for you before you use it.

Mostly Useful.......2000-12-02
I found the phrase book to be very handy in some languages, but in other languages, it didn't seem to be so thorough. I was in Central and Eastern Europe for four months and mostly used the book when I was eating out. It's a good source for vegetarians. I used t occasionally when asking directions as well and found my way around fairly well using the book. In less "touristy" areas the book didn't include as much information and I was left to my own devices.

pretty good . . ........2004-06-15
Though it includes the occasional typo, this book is pretty good. It's especially nice to have the "smaller" languages. But did I miss something? Why is there no Welsh?
It was useful and very good to have around.......1999-07-18
This book is very useful to me because I travel to Europe every year and when I go there, it's difficult to get around the airports or the country itself. This little phrasebook has helped me to communicate with the other people in the countries I go to.
Too difficult to find a phrase.......1998-05-04
The phrases in this book work well and the phoenetic spelling isn't horrible, I just found it difficult to quickly find what I wanted to say. I found the two page "essential phrases" list in the back of my other travel guides more useful because you didn't have to flip a bunch of pages to get what you need. I was on a brief trip to Europe, this book may be more useful for longer trips.
