Peoples Guide to Mexico.......2007-06-12
It actually is a fun book-- lots of odd information that I like to have-- but for my trip, it was more fun info than useful info--
So, if you're looking for information al la hippie era backpack/how to do..... it's great.
Excellent.......2007-05-16
With this book and one of the Moon Handbooks, you can survive and enjoy Mexico! Moon provides the immediate basics and the People's Guide provides the expanded answers. I'm still reading and re-reading it. Having done a lot of traveling, I know that there is nothing that will completely prepare you for your first arrival or even second and third to a country and its culture. But this book gets closer than most.
indispensable.......2007-03-24
if you want a guide to resorts and attractions, look elsewhere.
if you want a highly informative companion for exploring and
engaging with mexico on its own terms, don't question...just
buy it now.
An Education on Traveling in Mexico.......2007-03-22
This is the book that folks love and there are good reasons why.
This is more than a travel book it is and education about Mexican culture and manners, like having a best friend tell you what is the best way to do something and what to expect. Anyone going to Mexico should read this book it will increase your enjoyment of Mexico and help you avoid some miss-understandings.
You even need this book to know what is going on in Iowa.......2007-03-17
I have been in many places in Mexico, most often traveling alone. I've gone into the Tapo bus station in Mexico City and chosen my destination based on what bus was leaving soonest (Chiapas). I've eaten in Maya, Zapotec, Totonac, and Mixe village kitchens. One Holy Thursday I happened into a Mixe curing ceremony (which included a turkey sacrifice) on the peak of a remote mountain, then joined the indigenous speaking curandera, her client, and the client's mother in a drink of pulque afterwards. I've traveled by every class of bus, top to bottom, day and night. In every case, I have always had a sense of what was happening culturally thanks to Carl and Lorena's book, The People's Guide to Mexico. It is the only book I know of that could prepare one for Mexico. When the men are slaughtering a pig behind the house, while women are kneading masa and washing banana leaves to make tamales for a fiesta; from banana trees to eating cactus paddles; during impromptu living room sing-alongs; or drinking homemade capolin wine; you will not be unprepared. With Carl's illustrated discussion of Mexican hand signals, his introduction to Mexican cooking, and references to Mexican music you will be an insider.
None of my adventures duplicates any of Carl's accounts. Like the best kind of education, Carl and Lorena teach one how to understand Mexican culture in order to use the understanding in new or unusual circumstances, of which Mexico has an endless supply.
Even if you have a Mexican spouse, you need this book. The truth is that one even needs this book to understand what is going on in Postville, Iowa these days.

Book Description
<B>"A clear and intelligent description of the development and organization of Maya civilization." Natural History</B>
The Maya has long been established as the best, most readable introduction to the New World's greatest ancient civilization. In these pages Professor Coe distills a lifetime's scholarship for the general reader and student.
Since the publication of the sixth edition of The Maya, new sites have been uncovered and further excavations in old sites have proceeded at an unprecedented pace. Among the many new discoveries is the chance find of extraordinary murals dating to ca. AD 100 at San Bartolo in the Petén. New epigraphic, archaeological, and osteological research has thrown light on the identity of the "founding fathers" of such great sites as Tikal and Copan, and their close affiliation with Teotihuacan in central Mexico. The previously little known center of Ek' Balam in northeastern Yucatan has turned out to be a regional kingdom of major importance, with extraordinary stucco reliefs and a plethora of painted inscriptions.
It has now become apparent that the birth of Maya civilization lies not in the Classic but during the Preclassic period, above all in the Mirador Basin of northern Guatemala, where the builders of gigantic ancient cities (interconnected by causeways) erected the world's largest pyramid as early as 200 BC. All of these finds suggest that we must rethink what we mean by "Classic."
The seventh edition also presents new evidence for the use of wetlands by the Classic Maya, and fresh perspectives on the catastrophic demise of Classic civilization by the close of the ninth century. 175 illustrations, 17 in color.
Customer Reviews:
Any Author Who Can Make El Mirador Come To Life Deserves Five Stars.......2007-06-01
The ruins of the ancient Mayan city of El Mirador are deep in the jungles of northern Guatamala. Once one of the largest cities in North America with 80,000 people, El Mirador today is accessible only by helicopter or by long distance hiking. Before its mysterious abandonment in the third century AD, El Mirador boasted the Danta Pyramid, the largest structure of this type in the world. Michael Coe has written a facinating book about the world of the ancient Maya. His ability to make El Mirador and many similar sites come to life makes this book well worth the purchase price even if Yucatan and vicinity are not in one's travel plans.
Professor Coe traces the rise of Mayan civilization from earliest times, to the splendor of the Late Classic Period when as many as ten million people lived in the lowlands, to the "Mayan Apocalypse"of the eighth century AD when the greatest cities of the New World were abandoned and returned to the jungle. Each of the major sites is described in detail with a complete description of artifacts and numerous photographs and maps. The author concludes with an extended discussion of Mayan thought and culture, and with his personal tribute to "The Enduring Maya". The Mayan population of southern Mexico and Central America has returned to over seven million people despite five hundred years of European diseases and economic oppression.
It is important that we not miss the practical implications of this book. The "Mayan Apocalpse" had ecological roots. The population had increased beyond the carrying capacity of the land, and there was massive deforestation and soil erosion. Years of severe drought followed. There is currently a debate about whether global warming is real, and if so whether it matters. One of the first great civilizations in the New World came to a disastrous end because of its inability or unwillingness to deal with environmental issues. We need to draw proper conclusions from the Mayan experience.
A very good introduction to Maya archeology.......2007-03-29
From one of the most important mayanists, a very good introduction to Maya archeology.
Introduction to the Mayan culture.......2007-01-10
I found this book to be a very good introduction to the Mayan culture, however, introduction may be an understatement. This book is very indepth, and academic in nature which gives it a high level of credibility.
The Gold Standard by which to measure all others.......2006-03-10
Tho' I was "just" wanting to be informed before my brief trip to Mexico, it was a joy to read the Michael Coe book, & immerse myself in this rich history of the Mayan people. It made my visits to the ruins so very much more rewarding than a tour book could ever begin to do!
Amazing Book.......2006-02-17
Excellent book i love it, is very compresive also include excelent information about the maya culture like the most great cities and the development of the great culture

The Perfect Gift.......2007-05-12
I bought this book for a young couple headed to Cancun on their honeymoon! They loved it. (And they said the book wasn't bad either.)
Old but still the best.......2007-04-18
Although you have to know going in that the age of the book will mean many of the restaraunts will ahve closed, we still found this to be the only useful source of reviews.
As good as Lonely Planet in my opinion.......2006-07-22
Easy to read and understand info on nearly all hotels, restaurants & clubs in the Cancun tourist area. I really like that the location is pinpointed to like km 6.5 for example. Most directions in other ads and publications are to the nearest km marker so you may be trying to find a place for a half mile or so. Tough to do when you are dodging the Cancun taxis on the divided highway running for about 29 km through the hotel zone.
Helpful and informative on which places other travelers like and dislike. I travel to Cancun regularly and found new places to try in this easy to carry book.
I recommend this book for new or repeat visitors to Cancun.
Better than the others by far.......2006-07-14
I have been travelling to Cancun for over 10 years and lived there for a year and half, before, during and after Hurricane Wilma, and I am delighted to have found this guide book. It differs from the others not only for its content - detailed and accurate reviews of restaurants, clubs and hotels - but also for its convenient size. The first section, as others have mentioned, offers helpful tips you just can't find in the other guidebooks on the market, and the rest of it contains real reviews of just about every establishment a traveller will come across. This one was written from the heart - I highly recommend this book for both the inexperienced AND the experienced Cancun traveller.
Excellent book.......2006-07-14
I never planned on going to Cancun. I just recently planned a trip for 7 nights, 8 days. I used the book to find a hotel and am looking forward to using it during my trip to find places to eat, party, and visit! The book has lots of useful information. Not only did it list accomodations, bars, clubs, and some activities, it also gave useful information about Cancun. It told about transportation, medication to keep you healthy, how to keep from getting a hangover (helpful), different tequila's, etc. It's a must have!!

Customer Reviews:
All you need to know to live in Mexico.......2007-04-14
I spent three months living and working in Mexico and this was a great guide to get settled in with a lot of relevant information! A great read!
Very entertaining.......2007-01-10
A very good read. This book really takes you into the hearts and minds of Mexico and its people. It is not your typical travel book. Time is not spent on hotel and restaurant ratings but on surviving your trip. I have read it twice now as I prepare for a visit to Mexico and for retirement there in 4 years.
The stories are entertaining and fun to read. In many cases you can imagine yourself in those very same situations. You will laugh out loud on many occassions. This is definately a great book and comes highly recommended.
Now, if they would only write one on retiring in Mexico.....
A MUST READ.......2006-11-10
There are severAL BOOKS ABOUT MOVING TO OR LIVING IN mEXICO THAt merit reading. this is one
10 stars!.......2006-08-09
Too bad it's not possible to give more than 5 stars to a book, because this is one of the best books ever written, fiction or non-fiction!
Because the publication date is 2002, I passed over this book for a while, and ordered 4 other highly rated Mexico tour/relocation guides published in 2005/2006. There is truly a wealth of information out there, and some wonderful books, with up-to-date and detailed information, but having read all those wonderful guides, this is hands down the greatest--it's on another level entirely.
Yez, you'll learn a LOT about Mexico, including very specific preventions and treatments for mishaps like scorpion bites and upset stomachs. But what makes this book shine are all the wonderful stories about the authors' experiences all over Mexico. And the humor (sly little comments are inserted liberally in every section, causing me to laugh out loud on almost every page.) Not jokes, exactly, just wry, amusing ways of phrasing things.
All the stories could be gathered into a book of short stories, and it would be entertaining for anyone, whether or not they had any interest in traveling in Mexico. I stayed up 2 hours after I should have gone to bed because I simply couldn't stop reading the stories. I can't say that about any of the other guidebooks I've read.
If you have any interest at all in Mexico, and even more so if you plan to travel there at any time in your future, treat yourself to this book. It's a treasure.
BY FAR .... THE BEST BOOK OF "REAL" MEXICO !!.......2006-05-24
I have read several different editions of this guide, and found all of them useful and eye-opening! Read this and there will be no surprises when you arrive. Interesting reading... not boring. All about the REAL Mexico and REAL people... the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (not too much ugly!). Reading this gave me the courage to try a Mexican trip with my daughter ten years ago. I've been back to Mexico nine times since.... and I LOVE IT !!!! There is something for everyone in Mexico.... and your photographs will be so colorful!! 99 % of the people you'll meet are friendly.... welcoming... and courteous. Read the book... then be sure to go ---- you won't be sorry !!

A Wonderful and Useful Book. Makes you want to get out and Explore!.......2007-04-01
As a New Mexcio native I have seen and owned a number of books about the mountains of the State. This book is well organized and laid out and it invites you to take time and learn about all the various mountain ranges available to us in NM. The photography is first class and inspiring in the their own right. I particularly like the organization and format of the book. The size is just right and the information is presented in a way that is fun and just enough to answer all the main questsions without going into an overload of detail. A high quality folded two sided map is included in a back pocket and the map augments the information inside the book. This is a great gift fo people who appreciate the wonders on NM and want to to learn and explore more. Mike Butterfield and Peter Greene have done a great job with the book. Five stars are not enough.
Wondrous guide for armchair travelers and inspiration for outdoor enthusiasts .......2006-12-09
Mike Butterfield's Guide to the Mountains of New Mexico is a rapturous photographic showcase of the natural beauty of New Mexico. Full-color images on almost every other page capture the rainbow hues of the desert, the tenacity of local flora, the glory of sunrise and sunset and the pristine powder of winter snow. Hiker, backpacker, and aspiring naturalist Peter Greene provides text filled with information about the formation of major ranges as well as their recreational opportunities, ecology, true tales of exploration, and pieces of lore. Multiple maps, including a separate fold-out map showing ranges in photographic relief, as well as detailed peak and wilderness lists round out this wondrous guide for armchair travelers and inspiration for outdoor enthusiasts contemplating a New Mexico visit.

Short, sweet and to the point............2006-09-15
Although not a very big book, I found the information in 'When in Mexico' very accurate and very helpful. It was good to get some inside 'tips' that could save some embarrasment or hurt feelings when traveling in that great country, such as what time to arrive at someone's house for dinner, when it's not ok to haggle over prices, etc. The format of the book was kind of interesting, but it was still an easy read.

The People's Guide to Mexico is a different kind of guidebook--one that offers no lists of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, or beaches. As Carl Franz says in the introduction to this 25th anniversary edition, "It is not about which hotels to stay in or the most interesting villages to visit. The purpose of this book is to teach you how to find out those things for yourself." Instead of telling visitors where to go in Mexico, this book lets travelers know how to go, whether they want to learn Spanish, retire south of the border, or simply travel as long as possible for the least amount of money. The People's Guide offers up witty anecdotes and sane, reasoned advice about everything from driving in Mexico to dealing with Mexican machismo to making the most of village fiestas. Best of all, the book provides a respectful and well-informed take on Mexican culture. Wherever You Go ... There You Are, reads The People's Guide subtitle, and it's an apt summation of the book's laid-back, roll-with-the-punches attitude. Tuck a copy into your backpack alongside a more conventional guide; it's like having a funny, trusted, and well-traveled friend along to show you the ropes.

Excellent Resources, Tips & Advice.......2004-12-28
I take this every time I go to Mexico, as it always seems to have something more to offer. My copy is beat up & worn out but I love it.
Great tips, advice and information - highly recommended for anyone interested in getting beneath the skin of what Mexico has to offer.
OK, but then again..........2002-10-16
It's a very enjoyable read, no doubt about that. What you WON'T find is a bunch of addresses of hotels and restaurants, no maps, and no bus schedules. What you WILL find is a very long series of amusing tips and hints about travel in Mexico. However, the book is a little dated, and it's been many a year since Carl Franz travelled through Mexico in the style here related--his current guided trips through Sonora will cost you in the thousands, which is certainly not what this book was all about!
Too bad these guys haven't lived in other countries!.......2002-10-09
Excellent guide to Mexico. We found this to be the best and most readable of many guides on topics that included just getting along; driving, eating, etc. Very readable, humorous. Too bad these guys don' t have similar books for other countries in the manner of the 'Moon' handbooks, Eyewitness guides, etc.
Much of the information is old, based as it is on the authors trips to Mexico for the past several decades. Doesn't make the book any less valuable or interesting. If you're going to Mexico on anything other than the sanitized tourist package, you should get and read this book.
Mexican Magic.......2002-07-13
Carl Franz's fantastic book is not your typical guide book, nor is it intended to be. If what you're looking for is facts and information, maps and a list of cheap hotels and restaurants this isn't the book for you. If you want to cross the border in your mind and see what Mexico and its people are really like, then go no further. This is a book you can enjoy whether or not you're planning to go anywhere near Mexico. And after you've read it you'll not only feel that you've been there, you'll be packing to go.
the journey is the destination.......2002-05-25
I'm planning a trip to Central America and a friend lent me a 1986 version of the book. I found it to be funny and informative...The stories bring the information to life in a way that dry, factual guidebooks can't even begin to approximate. The knowledge Franz imparts throughout the book is very useful for travelling in ANY and EVERY country. I enjoyed Franz's lively writing style and his "Adventures" reminded me of similar experiences I'd had backpacking in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. On several occasions it had me laughing out loud and reciting passages to my girlfriend (and travel-companion) as we remembered going thru exactly the same ordeals in other countries...the book should be used with a guide (like Lonely Planet or Rough Guide) that can give you location-specific advice for more organised travel itinaries. All-in-all I was so impressed with the book that I bought the latest edition. The low-budget travel tips alone make it indispensible. It is a must for first-time peregrines or people who are new to "keepin'-it-real" travel...
