4 out of 5 stars A great choice.......2007-01-03

It's a great book. It is very complete and very accurate, most of the times.
I didn't gave it 5 stars because sometimes it isn't very easy to find the information.

I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Usefull stuff in, out with the rest..........2006-05-12

I bought this book 2 months ago while planing a trip to OZ & NZ later on this year.
It is well orgenized (the TOC is region based) and drills down in each area to its unique and famous places.
The book has just the right quantity of information regarding each item with a veriety of maps and side trip activities.
It contains a lot of usefull data about both countries and you can defenetly see the it was written by backpackers.
Reading the book has contributed me a lot in the planing fase of the trip, hopefully i'll be able to compliment it more after i'll return.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years, and as a result has experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.

Lonely Planet has done a superb job of capturing Mexico's diverse offerings in one totable book. Whether you're headed for Baja or Chiapas, this is an essential reference with excellent coverage of Mexico City, regional arts and crafts (including how to buy handicrafts), helpful Web sites, and a useful traveler's Spanish language section. --Kathryn True

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A great guidbook.......2007-05-10

I've been living in Mexico for almost a year now and used this book on a lot of travels throughout the country. The information is concise and extremely useful, the maps are great and the price indications help you stay within your budget.
I also bought Footprint's Mexico & Central America and have to say that even though it was from the same year the Footprint book was a lot less accurate and information a lot more difficult to find.
The only thing I critizise about the book is that the information about Culiacán is missing (?) and since there are a lot of new cheap Mexican airlines, there should be more airport information included (e.g. Cuernavaca's airport isn't even mentioned)

3 out of 5 stars Looking for the Revolution? Not in San Cristobal!.......2007-04-14

Unlike the some of the other reviewers, I thought this book was generally informative and had lots of good info on Mexico, including suggested itineraries. The maps are good and handy, a major plus. The descriptions of restaurants and hotels I also found well-described.

HOWEVER, I was mislead completely by the exuberance over San Cristobal de las Casas (State of Chiapas). This town is known for the Zapatista movement from about 15 years ago. Now, instead of being some kind of center of the leftist vanguard, it is over-run by Anglo & European tourists seeking some kind of 'authentic' experience. The local population is poor, uneducated, and NOT politically active. That's not a value judgment, that's just how it is. There are interesting things to see around San Cristobal (such as some villages known for weird religious rituals and waterfalls), but don't spend more than 2 or 3 days. You will have seen everything.

Oaxaca, on the other hand, is quite politically active and was recently the scene of a major crackdown by the Mexican government. If you want interesting politics, look here. There are also interesting side trips to all kinds of natural and man-made (ie carpets) wonders. Don't miss the mezcal tour!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-30

    Good service, right on time.

    I appreciate you bussines.
    Thank you

4 out of 5 stars what else would you expect from lonely planet?.......2007-03-24

simply put. it's great. up to date and very helpful in the field.

my only criticism would be that it's overly generalized. but that's
the kinda book this is. i just wish they published two versions of
each book: one for the budget backpacker types. and one for the
moneyed vacationers. these categories in themselves are already
vague enough to require some generalization, but it's a start.

anyway, i highly recommend this as well as
The People's Guide to Mexico (Peoples Guide to Mexico)
to prime you for some great adventures south of the border.

    5 out of 5 stars good reference.......2006-09-06

The info in this book is universal to different types of travelers. It is not meant to be read completely. It's format provides an overview of cities for tourists. Another writer from England, Ian Middleton, spent four months backpacking across Mexico. He considered Lonely Planet to be a "Barclaycard", never leave home without it. While Ian Middleton wrote an ebook titled "Down Mexico Way"(availabe at diesel ebooks) that is written in a different and candid format. I originally bought his book to research driving through mexico. But his book is mainly a sharing of one's journey as a backpacker by bus, personal van, hitchhike and train. I suggest decide what kind of traveler or tourist you are before when you buy these books.

4 out of 5 stars A handy source to use in Bali........2000-12-31

This book is a handy source for getting by speaking Bahasa Indonesia, the national language of Indonesia, and will serve you well if you go to Bali. In Bali, they speak Bahasa Bali and Bahasa Indonesia, and as I have read in Lonely Planet Bali & Lombok guidebook, apparently, Bahasa Indonesia is easier for the visitor to learn.

My husband and I used this book on our trip to Bali in April, and found it very useful. We pleased many Balinese by trying to speak in Bahasa Indonesia, instead of expecting them to speak English.

This is a very small book (126 pages, 3.5" x 5") and fits nicely in the pocket of the very lightweight clothing you will want to wear while in a hot, humid, tropical climate. The book is organized according to topics (food, taxi, shopping, emergencies etc.), rather than alphabetically like a dictionary, and we found the organization helpful when we really needed it, like when dealing with vendors or when going to a cafe. The only thing different that I would have liked to be added, is a small dictionary of Bahasa Indonesia at the back of the book to accompany the small English one. Although we were not at a loss without and Indonesian dictionary.

    4 out of 5 stars Selamat makan........2000-08-10

Selamat siang. Saya hanya tahu sedikit bahasa Indonesia. Dimana setasiun kereta api? Bagaimana jika kita makan pagi di warung ini? Saya mau beli kelambu. Terima kasih.

4 out of 5 stars Small size gets high marks.......2000-06-14

This fit-in-your-pocket phrase book is nicely designed, and I really use it.

The grammar section alone outperforms bigger Behasa Indonesia language courses for simplicity and clear explanations.

Categories like "Getting Around" and "Food" are well organized, and it really is possible to find what phrase you are looking for, standing at the market in front of Mister Banana Seller, in a few seconds. Glossary is English to Behasa Indonesia only (and not the other way around).

5 out of 5 stars Your Indonesian Language Survival Guide.......1998-02-28

Unfortunately Echols and Shadilly's two volume Indonesian dictionary is a little too bulky to carry when back-packing in Indonesia. On my first two visits to Indonesia I took the MIP Concise Indonesian Dictionary, which fits comfortably into a pocket, and it never really left my person. While I really like this dictionary (and will probably buy a copy of the new edition), with about 4000 entries in each section its limitations were always fairly obvious. For my most recent trip I bought a copy of Tuttle's Concise Indonesian Dictionary. With more than twice as many entries as the smaller dictionary, I expected this to be pretty solid. Most of the time it was, but there were a few problems: some words I expected to find - "swap" is one, "retribusi" is another - weren't included (though there is a somewhat obscure entry for "tank steamer"); there is an entry for "polemics" rather than for "polemic"; and explanation of meanings is limited, creating problems with polysemic words which even reverse lookup often fails to resolve. On the plus side, Tuttle's Dictionary just fitted into my trouser pocket, and its sturdy plastic cover is a godsend given the wear and tear of travel.

    4 out of 5 stars A great city and a great guide.......2006-12-17

Los Angeles is a tough place to see if you aren't with a local but the top 10 guide offers some great suggestions. The restaurants and museums recommend are all top notch. It is clearly laid out and the freeway map is wonderful. Highly recommend in conjunction with the Eyewitness California book.

4 out of 5 stars fun, thorough, useful book.......2005-02-26

I bought several other guide books to LA at the same time I got this one and I have to say, this one's definitely my favorite! It's smart, entertaining and really informative. I've lived here for 3 years & all of the stuff I was familiar with was described accurately, but most importantly, it introduced me to all sorts of great new stuff too. (Oh, I also recommend the book Counter Intelligence as a good guide to the restaurants of LA.)

    5 out of 5 stars a local likes.......2003-11-26

I've lived in LA for 5 years and the 1st edition of this book is how I truly got to discover this city. I own around a dozen LA guide books - some general, some specific to topics like food or architecture. If there ever was an all-in-one guide book for LA it tis he LP LA book. Far more detailed than the LA section of the LP California guide, it's full of maps, historical & architecure walking tours, restaurant recommendations, local history, and wacky places of the beaten path.
My only complaint is that future additions weren't as user friendly as the 1st edition. This is basically due to switching from color pages (and color maps) to black and white. The initial "best" of LA list changed, as well. I gave away my new edition and just held onto my old worn copy from '99.

3 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Star Dims on the Edition.......2003-03-09

I bought this book when I was in Spain to learn a bit about Los Angeles, the Metro System, the people, the places, and what to expect as a whole. I am like many others who REALLY ENJOY Lonely Planet books and make them my first choice when selecting a guide book. But, this edition needs to be redone.

My boyfriend (who has lived here for 10 years, and is a native Californian) was really disappointed in this book. He mentioned how Ms. Schulte-Peevers has completely missed the target audience, people who are coming to Los Angeles to soak up sun, expose themselves to other cultures and learn about the Los Angeles not seen by most. I mean, come on, "from collegen to celluloid" (see cover). How cliché can one be?

There is another layer to Los Angeles. A layer that envolves hard working people and a mind-blowing diversity of cultures, the likes of which is to be found nowhere else in the world.
Most of her comments are only related to where the hip and trendy (I swear to gawd, she actually uses the word "grungster")people are eating, sun-bathing and shopping. She leaves out most of the ethnic culture and cuisine that is here and waiting to be experienced by travellers. She also implies that Compton and Inglewood (South Central) are completely unsafe to visit. This could not be farther from the truth. As with every city in the world, they have places that are thriving and safe and areas that are dangerous.

Her areas visited seem only to be around the Venice Beach area and Santa Monica, not any place north, south, or east of the center of Los Angeles.

The only stars given for this book is the durability. Props to the publisher. The book is stitched to the spine with silk thread. Other guides are only glued.

If you want to know the real Los Angeles, check out the Fodors Gold Guide to Los Angeles and find a local person to show you around. In Fodors, things are organized by catagories and they tell you all kinds of useful stuff, like how to buy the tickets to an Angeles baseball game, eat at a decent restaurant and find the best and least crowded beaches. Admitedly, it is not much more than a phone book, and completely lacks any narative. But, alas, untill there is better, untill there is a travel book that takes note of the incredible mix of peoples and of waiting experiences that are here, it will just have to do :-(

Sorry LP, your star has dimmed considerably over Los Angeles!

    5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2000-11-03

This book far outshines the competition. The authors really know their stuff and offer so much more insight than the other glossed-over guides. If you really want the straight dope and have all your stereotypes smashed about Hollywood and Los Angeles, this is the book to use. Great restaurant recommendations, too.

I didn't find it of much use at all. I bought this for our trip to Norway and hardly used it. It didn't explain to you HOW to say the words. The Norwegian language is hard and not useful if you don't say the words right.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Hei or Hej?.......2002-05-14

I bought this LP book in anticipation of my trip to Sweden. My friend was impressed at the many anicdotes and brief background given about the Swedish language. I would agree with the other reviewer, they should include a section on grammer in the next edition, but, I think having Finnish in this book is ok, even though it is not a part of Scandanavia,it is a part of the Nordic Council of countries. The truth is, many folks in Finland speak Swedish as well as Finnish. I highly recommend this book for any trip you may be taking to the Nordic countries, granted you may not speak fluently with this book, but a few phrases will help you make some new friends.

4 out of 5 stars Useful and enjoyable.......2002-03-15

The sections on pronunciation are well done, and the vocabulary and phrases seem practical and realistic. However, little attention is paid to grammar. Six languages are covered, including Finnish which is of course not Scandinavian. It may be a better idea to break this book up into two or more volumes in future editions.
