Excellent phrasebook!.......2007-05-19
We are getting married in Greece next summer and this phrasebook has helped me remember so many of the Greek words & phrases that I will need to know. I already know how to speak & read Greek, but this is an excellent refresher. It is a small book that you can take with you everywhere. Definitely recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Quick Reference.......2006-07-15
An excellent quick reference for all your travel language necessities in Europe. And it's a handy little size too.
Minority languages.......2005-06-15
it is great to see the smaller langauges of Europe in this guide!!
WE DO EXIST REMEMBER!!
Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Basque and Catalan take their positions as European languages of note!
All BRITISH and SPANISH people should know some words in THEIR lesser used languages! Otherwise they are not really British/Spanish!!!
Even covers Welsh! .......2005-03-18
If you plan to travel all over Europe, this book may get you through and save the time and trouble of carrying a different phrasebook for each country. It is small, just slightly larger than the average palm and full of basic phrases.
It doesn't cover every language but DOES include Basque, Catalan, Welsh, Spanish, Turkish, Italian, Dutch, French, German and a wealth of others.
WHat I especially liked:
1. The tips on how to break the ice in each country and join in conversations
2.Menu decoders and suggestions for each country
3.Essential words to get you through transportation checkpoints and on your way
4. Some of the basic sports and festivals in each country.
5. Written FOR the traveler with a strong emphasis on the most essential situations when a phrasebook might be needed.
compact comprehensivephrasebook with pronunciation.......2002-07-12
This book has several advantages over other phrasebooks:
* Its got most of Europe (except Eastern) covered, including Irish!
* It is small - about the size of two decks of cards.
* It has the english phrase, the phrase in the translated language and then in blue how you actually pronounce the phrase. The pronunciations are spot on - the best thing about this book.
* It has phrases on absolutely everything - I even got to use my Greek phrase for "I would not like it extracted please" when I spoke to a greek student at the Oktoberfest who was studying dentistry. Everything's covered: getting on buses, going to the laundromat, getting directions, etc. About 20 pages on each language with everything that you will need to get by for a while.
* It's cheap and all in one book.
* A must have for anybody going to Europe who doesn't speak all their languages - I think that's everyone.
Very Useful but Missed out on Eastern Europe.......2001-12-14
This book is a useful guidebook to many languages of Europe, however some of the omissions are a bit strange; It includes Catalan and Basque but not Eastern European, or Scandinavian languages. It's convenience lies in being able to look up the same phrases for different languages.
I suspect it covers a lot of material from other Lonely Planet Phrasebooks, such as the Spanish one, just not as comprehensively.

Book Description
The marinated octopus begs description. Opposite, beautiful Elektra smiles but offers nothing. John nods and waits for the next smile. And so it goes, nod, smile, nod, smile. Desperate to break the cycle, John searches for the scraps of Greek he remembers. Somehow though 'I have a pet cat.' hardly seems appropriate. As another love affair fades with the sunset, John silently laments his lack of foresight.

Customer Reviews:
Currency is out of date!.......2005-03-19
I just purchased this book and am dissapointed that the currency is out of date. While the book seems like a great one to take with you (small in size), to me it seems pointless to bring one along that has drachmas not euros in it.
I only want to take ONE book with me when I travel, and this one could not be it since I would need a seperate one to understand how to converse in Greek regarding euros. Otherwise, it is set up very well and I agree with the other reviewers... I'll be first in line if they publish an updated version! But for now I am taking this one back.
Modern, Updated and Amusing Phrasebook.......2003-03-03
I am Greek-American and can speak both English and Greek. I bought this book for my amusement and was surprised that the book, unlike other phrase books, is a bit more modern as to phrase choice and very well-organized. I would suggest purchasing it, yet, keep in mind that in Greece most touristy places speak Greek and most Greeks under 35 know English in some form (as do other parts of Europe). Enjoy.
Not bad -- if you never use the toilet.......2001-02-24
Great book except that it lacks the most important phrase to learn when travelling abroad -- "Where's the toilet?" So before you go to Greece and get yourself in an uncomfortable situation, I suggest you scribble the following into the inside cover of your phrasebook: "Pu e toualeta?" You can thank me later. Another problem I found was the dictionary in the back, which lacks some essential travel words like "ticket". Not nearly as good as Lonely Planet's other phrasebooks.

Customer Reviews:
Well, this is where LP keeps its Italian. . ........2004-06-23
This book is a good resource. I'm slightly uneasy with the Serbo-Croatian section, which seems to contain some errors. I also wish the system for presenting varying levels of formality or various genders could be more standardized throughout the series, across languages. Also, Americans should keep in mind that these pronunciation rules were apparently designed more for British (and Australian?) readers. The effects of that mainly show up in vowel pronunciation, especially with o's and a's.
Lonely Planet Ought to Reprint This One.......2000-11-03
I used two different editions of this phrasebook in Macedonia, Greece and Bulgaria (western part, where Macedonian is spoken). Not only did I find it extremely easy to use, but everyone I met wanted to buy it off me. Albanians suggested that the Albanian section was nice; Macedonians suggested the Macedonian section was good. A Serbian friend of mine found the Serbian section useful for learning English phrases. Several people in Greece were delighted to see something that had Macedonian and Greek and Albanian all in one phrasebook but suggested that the Greek section was spotty. A member of the Turkish minority in Macedonia said she was irritated that Turkish was not included as a Mediterranean European Language but _even so_ tried to buy the phrasebook off me.
This is the single most useful phrasebook I have ever used on trips and made a nice gift to Balkan people there and here when it was available, along with the American colloquial phrasebook, , the "Lonely Planet USA Phrasebook : English, Native American Languages & Hawaiian (Lonely Planet : Language Survival Kit)", another inspired Lonely Planet phrasebook.

Excellent!.......2007-02-14
I am going to Paris in a few weeks and need a small book to carry around. I found this book and it is fab!
I have tabbed off the important details, like how to get a taxi and how to order vegitarian food. It also features a great 2 way dictionary. I look forward to using this handy book in Paris!
easy to hear audio but hard to follow along with book.......2006-08-20
i was debating between this book and In-Flight and ended up getting both. good thing bc In-Flight audio was terrible, but the companion book was done very well. completely opposite, the Lonely Planet's audio is great - they say the word/phrase twice and slowly, but the books it comes with aren't so great. the companion pamphlet has the follow-along to the CD but does not help with pronounciation. it does come with a pretty big to-go book, about 300 pages worth of French lessons, words, phrases - everything. a bit too much for a beginner.
the audio is good, but don't expect to pop it in the cd player and be on your way.

Came in handy.......2004-09-04
I used this little book while spending a couple of weeks in Greece. While I needed the assistance of English speakers for at least one sticky situation, between the little bit of Greek I learned from friends and this phrasebook, my companion and I got by pretty well. I particularly remember using it in a hotel where the owners didn't speak English, and again while talking with strangers on the phone.
However, the book (at least the edition I used) has at least one major boo-boo: the phrase allegedly meaning "Do you speak English?" actually means "Do you speak Greek?"! You can imagine the reactions you'd get with that mix-up, although most people would likely catch the error, as I did. Still, it does make me wonder what other errors I might *not* have caught . . .
Solid, but not the best.......2001-07-06
LP's Greece guidebook is great, for phrasebooks I'd say stick to Rough Guides. RG's all-alphabetical organization is far more intuitive. That said, either phrasebook is a good companion to travel, but you'll get a lot more out of it if you take a basic classroom or tape course to learn a bit of grammar and pronunciation (both a bit hard for English speakers), as well as to get used to reading the alphabet (not as hard as it looks).
