4 out of 5 stars Complete NYC guide.......2007-05-13

Typical LP style guide, it contains interesting city tours and brief descriptions of many touristic and non touristic spots in the city.

4 out of 5 stars Really Useful.......2007-01-09

It was the first time I was on NYC, I bought this guide couple of weeks before my trip. The Maps where just amazing, really useful, its true that you find a lot of maps overthere anyway, but getting familiar with your guide was really useful for me. The tour that the guide suggest are really accurate. The only thing that I would change is the amount of pages, because of two reasons 1.- is kind of bulky so even when is really easy to carry with your hand, or even when you are walking with back pack, when you have been walking for 10 hours even a sheet of paper will be heavy, 2.- I did not had the time to read it from the begining to the end, it was just too much, before the trip I had to work and during the trip I refused to seat in the park to read the guide having this amazing things to see. Dont get me wrong, this is an amazing guide, and in my next trip I would definetly consider buying lonely planet again.

3 out of 5 stars I recommend this guide only as a complement to the "Top 10 New York" guide, or other small guide like that..........2006-09-03

I recently visited NYC for the first time. I took only three books about that city with me: this guide, the "Top 10 New York" guide, and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". I must say that the "Lonely planet NYC Guide" was not my favourite, though.

Truth to be told, this guide has a lot of useful information, and that proved helpful in some cases. What is more, it has some interesting planned walking tours that I liked, and good sections with data about the city and its history.

On the other hand, this guide doesn't have too many photos in color, and it includes some maps that are not specially good, particularly if you compare them with the spectacular maps of the "Top 10 New York" guide. Furthermore, it is big enough to be heavy, something that you will not appreciate if you have to carry it with you the whole day.

On the whole, I can say that I liked this guide, but I recommend it only as a complement to the "Top 10 New York" guide, or another small guide like that, the kind of guide that you can carry with you while you leave the "Lonely planet NYC Guide" in your hotel room to check at night if needed. Enjoy your trip :)

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-06-21

I liked the combination of facts and opinions. Interesting suggestions. Good walking tours. Good color maps.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide, BAD index.......2006-04-04

What makes this a great guide is the fact that the listings for attractions/ shops / etc all have map numbers, which makes them very easy to find on the book's maps. Also, the maps have their own little mini tables of attractions. So, it's easy find where to go (if you are looking for something in particular) or what's around you (if you're already there). Unfortunately, the index is sorely lacking. Suppose you want to go for a horse-drawn carriage ride in Central Park, and you want to know where to find the carriages. You will not find out through the index. There is no mention of them under "Central Park." There is no listing for "carriages" nor "carriage rides" and the listing for "horse-drawn carriages" is about the ones in Philadelphia. Luckily, there actually is an extensive paragraph telling you all you need to know about this, and it is in the book's description of Central Park (which makes sense). But you wouldn't know by looking at the index. So, if you're planning a trip to N.Y., and you don't see a particular attraction in the index, do some research on the web, find out where it's supposed to be, and then turn to the section on that particular neighborhood in the book. Maybe you'll find it there. Use a highlighter to mark the page.

3 out of 5 stars A bit brief.......2006-06-21

I like the information included in this book, but for a such a big, historic state it seems that 300 pages is not enough. The section on New York City is pretty good and the suggestions thoughout the state turned out well. I wanted more information about upstate. The history section doesn't mention the war of 1812 that played an important part in the state.

5 out of 5 stars Best Travel Book Ever! Fun Read and Guide!.......2005-04-24

We took our sons to NYC over their spring break, and we all loved this book. The kids read the introduction parts before we left, and one quoted from the book when we saw our first panhandler. We went to most of the places the book described, and felt we got so much more out of what we were seeing since we already knew something about each place. I especially appreciated the warning about the $20 mac and cheese, the deli speak glossary, the NYC character advice -they're not rude just absorbed-, and too many other tidbits of information to list. Very useful and a good read as well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a weekend trip.......2006-03-12

I bought this book before I read the reviews, and I'm glad I did. The Hudson River Valley is expensive. That's why no cheap lodgings are in the book. We stayed at the Peekskill Inn and found it very affordable as well as charming. The book is small enough for an easy carry - as befits a weekend tripper. It's nicely divided into possible weekend trips so the reader can choose which area fits their mood. Each area gets a thorough review of what it has to offer - not just food, lodging, cultural events, but an understanding of where the area has been and what it has to offer the traveler. The icing on the cake is that the book is fun to read, e.g. "Woodstock feels like an unmade bed - comfortable but disheveled."

2 out of 5 stars not a primary guide.......2005-11-03

I am a Lonely Planet enthusiast and usually use them as my main source during trips and collect them for armchair reading. I saw this and picked it up since I live near the area and have not ventured there in a long time.

This book should only be purchased if you already have the Moon Handbook to New York. I just got the Moon after using this and another guide on previous trips and I feel foolish.

First of all, the money you save by buying this little diary may very well be spent anyway since Ms. Williams doesn't seem to have any interest in anything but high end B&Bs, so if you are on a budget and don't mind a clean but boring room there are no listings, that's none: zero. I found places like this but at random, and almost stayed in a dangerous area because I knew of no alternatives. Moon lists all acceptable motels and B&Bs and lets you decide what you want and how much dough you have.

Second, Ms. Williams likes cool coffee shops, eatieries, shops, but doesn't seem too keen on turning out much copy on historical and cultural sights, so there is precious little coverage. Moon's background info is superior and again, they list all the options and let you decide. Moon New York has more overall info on Hudson Valley despite the fact that it covers the rest of the state as well, and if your car can go over 40 mph I'm sure there's something in a neighboring area that suit your tastes.

And I know LP has other regional guides, but would it kill them to throw in more coverage of the Catskills? We're not talking about Miami to Greenland here, just what's within a two hour drive.

3 out of 5 stars Moderately helpful but a bit thin on details.......2004-08-20

I just returned from a trip to the Hudson River Valley using this book as my primary guide. WIlliams' style was entertaining, and her restaurant advice terrific when it came to The Calico Restaurant in Rhinebeck (we had a fabulous meal) but important details were neglected.

WIlliams' accurately described the town of Hudson, with the town center choc-a-bloc full of antique shops, surrounded by urban decay. With a love of antiques, I planned a trip to Hudson to for an extensive 'tique crawl only to discover 99% of the shops are open ONLY Friday-Sunday. Hudson being far north of my base, the travel time ate much of the day making a last minute change of plans a real challenge.

Likewise, she neglected to mention in any detail the Institute for Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, which is a fascinating place with an excellent perennial garden and very pleasant, helpful and knowlegable staff. Fortunately, we stumbled onto this place by accident, but it was a trip highlight.

Short shrift was similarly given to the many wineries in the area, merely mentioning their existence but with few details.

The maps were helpful, and as I mentioned earlier, our lunch in Rhinebeck at the Calico Restaurant was divine so she gets credit for that. Otherwise, think of this book as a basic intro only and plan on doing much more research before you depart for the Hudson River Valley.

3 out of 5 stars LP is sliding.......2004-01-23

I was impressed with Lonely Planet's guide to Texas, so I bought this one for a trip to Pennsylvania. It covers the major stuff --- Philly, Pittsburgh, Gettysburg, Hershey, Lancaster --- but doesn't have much more than these major areas. I got ahold of the Moon Handbook for Pennsylvania and was...impressed. It guided me to places I never knew existed: Covered bridges dotting southwestern Pennsylvania, non-tourist infested Amish communities in central and western PA, winieries in North East, and the hiking paradise that I found in the Black Forest area. However, LP did a good job at the places it did cover, and I used it to select accomodations. Guess I justed wanted something a little more in-depth.

5 out of 5 stars Another good Lonely Planet book!.......2001-02-15

Lonely Planet New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, is a great book to have if you intend to visit all three states. There information is second to none, except New York City (buy Lonely Planet's New York City Guide). The entire Pennsylvania chapter is excellent also, and the guides to specific places like Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and the Lake Erie region is first rate! The only problem is that they skipped Meadville, PA, which is a excellent place between Erie and Titusville, and is near places like Conneaut Lake and Pymantuning.

5 out of 5 stars New York City in a Nutshell.......2003-11-11

This was an excellent guide for my fist ever visit to NYC, and I feel that it will continue to be useful for many trips to come because there is SO much there! This book has an abundance of information on all areas of the city. It had great overviews of Manhattan as a whole, and minute details that prove to be important as you make your way around the city (for example, hours of all the museums, and a detailed map of Central Park). It even had really neat walking tours around all the different neighborhoods (the snapshot maps are great) that pointed out the don't-miss sights around each area of Manhattan. For those exploring beyond Manhattan, it also has chapters on all the boroughs. It could have included a little more of the nightlife, but the restaurant selections more than made up for that. The Subway map in the back of the book is a very valuable asset, and I found it helped make the trains quite manageable.

This book is a must have for any first-timer to Manhattan, and probably even has new information for those that have been there many times.

4 out of 5 stars May be all you need to visit NYC.......2003-10-30

This book has a lot of good information that I used for my wife's & my first visit to New York City. It has more information than most people will need unless you're going to be sightseeing in NYC for at least one month. It has some restaurants listed but the Zagat Survey book is best for restaurants.

Lonely Planet provides full-service guides in a candid, compact style, and that's what David Ellis's Lonely Planet New York City guide delivers, attending diligently to every topic any New York visitor might possibly need or desire. For the New York novice, there are all the elementary details, such as tourist offices, embassies, money, post offices, electricity, laundry, where to get maps, and primary radio frequencies. Resources are listed for gay and lesbian travelers, as well as for women, seniors, disabled travelers, and families traveling with children. Special events are enumerated, plus good New York Web sites and where to turn in case of emergencies. And that's just one small section of the book. There are also chapters on New York history, climate, geography, and politics; practical details on getting there by air, bus, train, car, motorcycle, boat, and hitchhiking; and getting around the city by subway, bus, taxi, car, and bicycle. Then comes the heart of the guide, with comprehensive attention to what there is to see and do in Manhattan's many neighborhoods and outer boroughs; where to stay, eat, and shop; all manner of entertainment, from horse racing and hockey to dance clubs, opera, and bars; as well as an assortment of excursions throughout Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and New Jersey. With an architectural glossary, an extensive index, and an excellent collection of maps, this guide is a thorough New York resource. --Stephanie Gold

    1 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2003-04-13

Of all the Lonely Planet guides I have used, I found this one most disappointing. The layout is indeed enticing, with excellent integration of text, pictures, maps, and amusing graphics. The critical flaw, however, is that it makes a lousy companion for when you are actually touring New York City.

The walking tours are inane collections of random descriptions--I was shocked to discover that my free AAA guide gave me a much better sense regarding the character, history, and culture of New York neighborhoods than Lonely Planet's glossy, but shallow, approach in this book. Many of the things I would have wished to learn about New York, such as its rich architural, historical, cultural heritage throughout its different neighborhoods, were not to be found. In general, great on fluff and presentation, but lacking in substance for one of the world's most substantial cities.

    5 out of 5 stars feeling a New Yorker.......2002-06-26

I bought this book before my arrival to New York. I have lived here for the last year. I used this book so many times to walk around, I double-checked lots of small details in this book without finding a single out of date information. I already feel like a New Yorker, and love this city! This book can equally help a weekend visitor, a short-time tourist or somebody who moves to New York for good.

    4 out of 5 stars A helpful tourist guide.......2000-06-09

This is one of the more comprehensive travel guides to New York that I have found. It includes lots of vital information on transportation and clear, helpful maps, which I found invaluable on my trip to the city. There was also a great deal of information of interest to visitors from outside the US, which I found interesting.

The sections on the outer buroughs are a little brief, but most tourist visitors to the city are probably more interested in Manhattan anyhow. A great travel guide, but if you're a resident or planning on moving to New York, another book might be more helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book to actually carry around with you........2007-01-27

Some people might want even more info but there really is enough in this book to plan a great visit to NYC. Plus it's small enough to carry with you so you always have a map, a subway map and food recommendations with you. I tried a number of the restaurants listed in this book and they were all very good. The street map with items plotted right on it is very helpful and I'd be a mess without the subway map. If you want to make sure you cover all the best sights and museums, the Highlights section near the front is a great check list. This book has served me well on two trips to NYC, I plan to buy the new edition when it comes out in May before I go back over the summer.

    1 out of 5 stars Too itemized.......2006-02-20

The LP 'Best Of' book on NYC was to itemized. It ended up containing very little actual information on NYC. My girlfriend and I was in NYC the week of the 6th of February and used nothing but the map. More useful information can be found on the internet, so I cannot recommend this book; even though it is inexpensive, it is money well used for other purchases.
