4 out of 5 stars A little too comprehensive.......2007-04-12

Got this book 7 days after ordering on free shipping. Not too bad, kudos to Amazon. The book is the latest version and includes updated information, though not to a very large extent.

Provide good practical information on National Parks in the region but probably a bit lacking on transportation. It would be ideal if there's listing of popular train routes as I found it in the Russia and Belarus edition.

4 out of 5 stars as good as any LP product.......2007-03-29

good volume as I've found all LP publications to be.........a little thin on Estonia but enough for a day in Tallinn

    3 out of 5 stars Phrasebook so-so.......2003-07-09

I didn't find it of much use at all. I bought this for our trip to Norway and hardly used it. It didn't explain to you HOW to say the words. The Norwegian language is hard and not useful if you don't say the words right.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Hei or Hej?.......2002-05-14

I bought this LP book in anticipation of my trip to Sweden. My friend was impressed at the many anicdotes and brief background given about the Swedish language. I would agree with the other reviewer, they should include a section on grammer in the next edition, but, I think having Finnish in this book is ok, even though it is not a part of Scandanavia,it is a part of the Nordic Council of countries. The truth is, many folks in Finland speak Swedish as well as Finnish. I highly recommend this book for any trip you may be taking to the Nordic countries, granted you may not speak fluently with this book, but a few phrases will help you make some new friends.

4 out of 5 stars Useful and enjoyable.......2002-03-15

The sections on pronunciation are well done, and the vocabulary and phrases seem practical and realistic. However, little attention is paid to grammar. Six languages are covered, including Finnish which is of course not Scandinavian. It may be a better idea to break this book up into two or more volumes in future editions.

2 out of 5 stars Unreliable information. Very disappointed........2006-11-10

Sometimes I wonder if LP is getting complacent because of their brand name and is not doing as good a job validating the information published. I used this guide in my recent travel to 4 countries in the Scandinavia. For every country, at least 50% of the information on cafes/restaurants/hotels were incorrect. Eg. in Helsinki, I went to 4 restaurants listed on the book. Out of 4, only 1 is correct. The other 3 have either closed down, moved or changed owners and is no longer serving what the guide describes. The friend who was travelling with me even asked me to toss the guidebook away, after the time we've wasted getting to all the restaurants/cafes that no longer exists. In my final stop, Norway, I was really hesitant to use the guide further, as it made so many mistakes. I did use it one more time to book the Norway-In-A-Nutshell package as per the book's recommendation and directions. What I found out later, through other travellers, was that it is better to book this at the train station and each leg separately, rather than as a package. By booking each leg separately, you can easily save up to Kr 400 (which is ~ USD 65, Euro 50). The amount of effort and time to do either is the same. I am hugely disappointed by LP's efforts in research and updating the information they publish.

      4 out of 5 stars Hostel Listings.......2004-01-05

Lets face it this book is for backpackers trying to sqeeze by in an expensive place like Scandinavia. If you want to read about the region than your going to need another book. Outside the major citites this book probably lacks coverage but in the cities it is a completely different story. I did some major hosteling in Scandinavia due to budget constraints. Many of these hostels were the nicest ones I have ever seen. If you want to hostel around Scandinavia this book is the most useful lonely planet I have yet to purchase out a dozen or so.

2 out of 5 stars do not get this guide. no details.......2003-12-08

After using several Lonely Planet books, I was thoroughly disappointed with this guide. The guide stuffs Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Do that many people hit Greenland and the main Scandinavian countries in the same trip to justify putting it in the same book? The result is that the book is short on detail, even the basic "Things to Do" that you can find in a competing Scandinvian guide. The guide is about 1/3 the size of just the Finland book, but about the same price.

3 out of 5 stars Does the job of a phrasebook, but hardly ideal.......2006-01-04

Lonely Planet's BALTIC PHRASEBOOK covers the languages of the so-called Baltic republics, Estonian, Latvia, and Lithuanian.

In terms of phrases, all three chapters cover the same ground. General matters like asking directions and shopping are included, as are more specialised things like visiting the doctor. The menu decoders are very helpful. Oddly enough, when a phrase contains a different word-form depending on what gender is spoken of, the order is "feminine/masculine" instead of the "masculine/feminine" of most phrasebooks and dictionaries.

In their coverage of grammar, however, each chapter differs. That on Lithuanian includes a discussion of noun morphology, although it only shows four out of the language's seven cases. This may enable the traveller with some prior experience with inflected languages, such as Latin or Russian, to construct sentences not found in the book. However, the chapter on Latvian doesn't give any information like that.

The book contains some general tourist information and maps for the Baltic republics, which makes it larger than it might be and somewhat redundant, as many travellers will already have a specialized guidebook for the region.

This phrasebook may not be an essential purchase for someone spending only a few days in the region. Most young people in these three countries speak admirable English, and older shopkeepers can be addressed in Russian without problems (the guidebook line that shopkeepers here take offense at being addressed in Russian seems to be a myth).

        4 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful.......2004-04-04

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone spending more than a week in the Baltics! Last year, I spent a semester in Lithuania, and this book made the transition much easier! From going to the pharmacy to buy flu medication, to trying to find out where the outdoor market was, to telling a doctor that I had hurt my knee -- this book was constantly by my side and helped me be very independent while in a foriegn country. I was also able to learn a lot of phrases that I wouldn't have in my Lithuanian class. My only complaint is that sometimes the phonetic guide was a bit confusing, but this rarely interfered with my communication (if it does, you can just show the phrase to the person you are trying to speak with).

5 out of 5 stars I love this little phrase book!.......2000-09-15

Actually, I love all "Lonely Planet" phasebooks and travel guides. You can't go wrong with them. These are the road warriors in our collection. They are worn, used and helpful! I want to own stock in Lonely Planet!

So you ask, "isn't there a later edition available?" Don't let that stop you. They are using a winning format and when it comes to speaking at least Lithuanian, little has changed (Lithuanian is a really, really, really old language!)

The book is concise and compact (3.5 x 5 x 1/2). It easily fits in any pocket. That is a major selling point. It is the perfect size to take along.

It has an abreviated pronunciation guide compared the single language versions and no dictionary. That comes form having to divide the space between three languages, so it can't go as in depth. Still, all the essentials are here. If you are planning a few days in each place, you'll be fine.

By the way, when you go to the Baltics, look for a copy of the "In Your Pocket Series" available at the airport or in the major hotels. It will be a great help to you. You can also find it online through a simple web search.

4 out of 5 stars It made me curious.......2000-05-14

This book made me plan my 2-weeks summer-vacation in Estonia.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for people on a budget (like me !).......1998-07-20

Lonely planet has almost become the Bible for budget travellers. This book contiunes the trend - most people in the youth hostels I stayed at in Sacandinavia had a copy ! As ususal, the book provides good information on places to stay and eat as well as suggested sights. If anything, the book is a little light on detail in some areas. This is basically because it trys to cover such a large area. Therefore, travellers are advised to use this book as a guide only. It does not compensate for making your own enquies and going 'off the beaten track'. As usual, the book is well organised and reference making access to information quick and efficient. This is certainly thes best guide for Scandinavia I found and a must for independent travellers. Enjoy your trip ...

4 out of 5 stars First Time Traveler to Lithuania September 2005.......2005-09-26

I found the Lonely Planet Estonia Latvia & Lithuania book very helpful on my first trip to Lithuania. Six women traveling, we felt very safe, the maps were well written and made our daily planning easy. Time distances on the bus were accurate. Information on customs made us feel more at ease. We looked for relatives because my grandmother left Lithuania 100 years ago and found them. A bus trip to the city she was from, visiting the Tourist Information Center(as was listed in the book), an English speaking person in the office and we asked for a phone book which listed two phone numbers with my grandmother's last name. Wow, thank you Lonely Planet.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but needs some work.......2004-09-27

As usual, Lonely Planet guides give the most detailed information on the "nuts and bolts" of travel (bus and train instructions, locations and practicalities.) We found this particularly useful in a region where we did not share a common language with the people.

However, tourism to the Baltic region boomed in 2004 with these countries' entry into the EU, making the book's hotel listings completely inadequate. I don't fault the authors/editors for not anticipating the boom, but rather comment that, for example, with only 3000 hotel rooms in Vilnius a guidebook now needs to list a lot more hotles so visitors can hope to get one of those now-coveted rooms!

The other drawback of this book is common to most other Lonely Planet titles: the information on cities, buildings, monuments, etc., is very dry (lacks color) and is overly terse. For such information, I have come to enjoy Rough Guides which usually include enjoyable walking tours of the major tourist areas.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Concise.......2004-05-04

The authors managed to stuff everything you need to know in a relatively small book. I have been in the Baltics three times and know Latvia quite well, but this book will enrich my next trip (the relatives and locals can only do so much).
          I recommed it.

          2 out of 5 stars Lonely Plantet - Estonia Latvia & Lithuania.......2004-04-26

A major disappointment. I bought this book expecting useful information on travel between the three Baltic Republics but found virtually nothing of value. The book does devote a half page to Trans-Siberian train travel with mention of side trips to Lake Baykal and Mongolia. Figure that one out. Most of the "Getting There and Away" has to do with getting to the individual Republics from Europe and other parts of the world and even a lot of this is out dated. It seems that much of the book is cut and paste and lacks continuity between the various pieces. This book is need of a complete overhaul. Sorry to say, it's better than nothing, but not by a significant margin.
