Customer Reviews:
A Great Guide Book from the People Who Do it Best!!.......2007-03-09
Another quality guide book from the folks at Lonley Planet. Can't go wrong here, great research as well as a lot of post-Katrina information. Highly reccomended for any savvy traveler!
Yeah you rite, brah!.......2001-01-05
My trip to New Orleans this week was without a doubt my best road trip ever. This guide made it possible. Having only been to New Orleans three times, I was concerned about being able to fill four days with events other than sleeping off the previous night's madness. This book enabled me to drag myself and my friends around town like a native. I cannot recommend this book enough (or the Chicken Roulade Tchoupitoulas at K-Pauls, also 5 stars)!!
The Big Easy made easy.......2001-01-04
I have long been a fan of Lonly Planet and this book helps me continue the trend. With this invaluable guidebook, we selected our transportation from the airport, hotel, and must see, do and eat lists. Everything was great! Information is presented in a clear, concise and HONEST way. We knew where to go and what to skip. The book is durable and easy to tote around. A must!
Excellent Companion!.......2000-09-06
Of all the tour books I hauled with me to the great city of New Orleans, this was the best. Detailed mapping of the city especially the French Quarter. It tells you the truth of where to go and not to go and where you can get a decent cheap meal but it also tells you where to go when you want to wine and dine. It tells you fascinating details of the city and the best haunts of the city and places that you are best missing but it tells you why in great detail. And it tells you of it's famous residents from Anne Rice to Tennessee Williams. I couldn't survive without this book! It is a must have for anybody going to New Orleans!

Covering Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, Lonely Planet provides 69 detailed maps; accommodation options from forest campsites to antebellum plantation mansions; plus history, museums, personalities of the Civil Rights movement, Mississippi blues profiles, clubs, and festivals. The South is a geographically large portion of the country, with terrain that ranges from sunny Gulf coast beaches to Cajun swamps to sugar-cane fields to Appalachian hardscrabble, and for first-time visitors it may feel like a foreign country. It's a good place to have a reliable travel guide, with all the necessary particulars (lodgings, transportation, tourist offices, and liquor laws), plus where to get your pork tenderloin, fried okra, and pecan pie feasts; your hickory-smoked barbecue, corn pone, or shellfish extravaganzas; and your Creole and Cajun comestibles. This guide covers all the bases. Along with comprehensive listings for sightseeing and nightlife, there are interesting sidebars on floating casinos, the etymology of redneck, and a little baseball background on Birmingham's Rickwood Field, plus an introduction to Louisiana's Daiquiri Drive-Thru, where you needn't leave your car to drink and drive. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide.......2005-12-19
This is an excellent introduction and travel guide to the southern states in and around the Mississippi delta region. It covers Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee along with information on towns and cities such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and many more.
I recently had the opportunity to travel through most of the region covered in the travel guide - before the hurricane in 2004. I drove my car (from Toronto) down through Louisville and into Tennessee, then on to Alabama, Mississippi, making a loop through New Orleans, going north through Louisiana to Baton Rouge and departing the delta into Texas at Shreveport, taking the interstate to Dallas. This whole delta region is a very unusual region. I was intrigued by the vast areas of swamps in southern Louisiana and the elevated interstate highways. These are constructed like continuous bridges elevated above the swamps. This region contains many beautiful southern farms and forests. I was a bit disappointed by New Orleans and think it is a bit over hyped as a tourist destination and it has a reputation of being a bit dangerous after dark. Having said that it does have its own charm, cooking, and unique culture, and it is probably the most interesting spot to visit in this area. It is a city that one does not want to skip.
The book is an excellent and a very well balanced guide. I was pleasantly surprised to use this book as a guide and resource. It has lots of photographs, maps, descriptions of things to see, places of interest, local culture including southern cooking, and more. The book has many things that communicate the unique lifestyle, history, and culture of the region and it makes for an excellent travel reference. All you need is this book and a book of state highways or download a Yahoo trip planner that gives driving instructions. I prefer the map book that are typically 8.5" x 11" that have one state map per page plus the overall intersate guide at the front.
The guide has the usual lists of hotels and restaurants, but I booked my rooms by the internet or just stayed a local places as I found them by car. Book your city hotels in advance. New Orleans and Memphis are sometimes very busy. In any case the restaurant guide is good.
Good buy and I highly recommend.

A Travel Guide to the Mecca of Foodies.......2001-03-01
This is the travel guide for those whose preferences include food, beverage and the social order of eating with others. No hotel listings or must sees for the ordinary tourist. Though centered in New Orleans, the book also includes valuable food resources throughout the cajun country of Southern Louisiana. Great photos make this a nice souvenir or even a gift for the armchair tourist. It also has great maps and sense of the local vernacular. It's small size makes it easy to stash in a pocket or purse for the traveller afoot.
it's all true..the the stories.......2001-02-28
Pableaux is my cousin. As I read through my copy, I jumped to the 'Biscuit Torture', 'Keeper of the Nog', and my grandmother's quiet relishing of a homegrown tomato and a 'pinch' of salt. It was like going back in time and savoring it all over again. I'm not writing because he's my cousin, I'm writing because this book is a great read. I have purchased it for nine friends in the Chicago area. It is informative and concise as well. Great job paul...
Travel Guide to Mecca for Foodies.......2001-02-28
This is a travel guide for people whose priorities are food, beverage and the social order of eating out. Though centered in New Orleans, it also lists valuable food resources throughout the cajun country of Southern Louisiana. The book is well laid out, features excellent maps and gives the reader a wonderful feel for the local vernacular. Most pages feature great color photographs. Best of all for the traveler afoot, its small size allows you to slip it into a jacket pocket or purse.
Lots of Lagniappe.......2000-12-27
I have really enjoyed this book and the way it was written. The author gives you history, science, culture, restaurant recommendations, recipes and other local "need to know info" that will be helpful as you mosey around Louisiana looking for good food.
I am originally from south Louisiana and would highly recommend this book to anyone visiting or even to someone living in the state.

Useful Pocket Map for New Orleans.......2002-04-05
Lonely Planet puts out a decent plastic covered "pocket" map of New Orleans. It has the street car stops on the map as well as a street index. I was disappointed it did not have an interesting sights or Hotel index but each of those are listed on the map itself. The French Quarter section is quite detailed. The surrounding area of New Orleans is a bit spotty. Created in 2001 so its fairly recent and up to date.

Fun to Read.......2004-01-24
I like the LP Condensed for the obvious reasons - lots of info in a convenient size, but this book is so well written that it would be fun to read even if I were not going to New Orleans. "If you hate good food and despise a good time, then New Orleans is still worth it for the architecture alone." The section I found especially useful was Music Clubs because this is hard to find info.
