Disappointing.......2007-03-01
As always, the Lonely Planet guide is well-structured with key features such as bus schedules. This particular guide was hit-and-miss with its information, however. Lodging prices were out-of-date (not just seasonally); the Tropical Education Center's prices have nearly doubled. The biggest problem is the outright-misinformed notion that Belize's dry season starts in November; every Belizean told me that it always starts in January or February, hence water levels were still high and wildlife was scarce during my February trip. Several towns and locations of interest were left out, forcing me to buy the Rough Guide. Although the Rough Guide reads like a novel and not so much a field guide, it has more information than the Lonely Planet guide. This was the first trip where nobody I met was using the LP guide.
An absolute must to Belize!.......2007-01-29
Rarely has a book been so useful in traveling around a country. Belize is not so big and the information inside covers most details you will ever want to ask about Belize. Very much in the best spirit of Lonley Guides whose devoted user I have become for any travel to a new destination. Highly recommended for all the Belize travellers (incl. Tikal in Guatemala).
Packed with information.......2007-01-24
A must have for traveler's going off the beaten path. If you're the type that likes to take local transportation and call ahead to hotels, this guide is what you need. If you prefer to stay in an all-inclusive resort, you'll still get inside information about what to do and see locally.
Lonely Planet comes through again!.......2006-03-09
I purchased three Belize guide books, and this was by far the best!
The New Key to Belize(1994) and Hidden Belize(2001) had outdated and duplicate information(word for word!)
Buy the Lonely Planet Book, you will not be disappointed!
Fantastic Book - RIGHT ON THE MONEY.......2006-02-23
Bravo Lonely Planet!
This is an EXCELLENT book for planning your Belize Vacation.
Lonely Planet took the time to send their writers to Belize, and they traveled all over the country including they Cayes. All the information in the book is current and hits the nail right on the head!
While Belize is still a very ecomonical place to vacation, Belize is not as cheap as some other Central American countries. From my experiences, Belize is the cheapest place to vacation in the Caribbean, but the most expensive in Central America. So if you are looking for a vacation that offers you amazing adventures like Mayan Ruins and Cave Tubing and you are also looking for incredible snorkeling, diving, or windsurfing, then Belize is your perfect destination.
Thank you Lonely Planet for getting the information right! Belize has changed A LOT in the past few years, and Lonely Planet knows Belize!!!

Product Description
In the former cradle of the Mayan empire, Belize is one of the world's top ecotourism destinations. Topside, tropical rainforests are populated by exotic birds, monkeys and wild cats, while offshore lie the world's second-largest barrier reef and three of the Western Hemisphere's four coral atolls. Shallow reefs ring the more than 450 cayes and islets, while towering walls plunge into the sea. More than 400 fish species and a host of corals and invertebrates shelter in the warm Caribbean waters. This book explores 66 of the best dive sites off Belize, with full-color photos throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading names.......2007-02-19
It is a good overview book, but when we got to Belize realized that a lot of the sites that are listed are not called by the same name at all - so hard to determine what sites we had really dived compared to the book. Also it covers a lot of area in Belize (if you are going to Ambergris Caye then maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of the book is useful).
Not so informative..........2007-01-29
This is a fair book, but loads of sites are missing (from this edition at least) and much of the information I expected to find was not in it - particularly the prices and quality of the various diving shops. It is a mere overview of what you find under the sea, with little on how to actually get to that point.
Better than nothing........2007-01-24
While I agree with the previous 2 reviewers. I did find the book helpful as a brief and very general overview of what was available and what there was to see in those dive areas. It put the areas in geographical perspective for me and was a nice addition to the dive briefing. After the dive, the fish ID part was a nice memory jogger for doing my logbook entries.
However, it does not help with planning a dive or a dive trip. You can get more info on that free from websites, magazines and dive tour specialists.
Overall better than nothing if you're into filling out your logbook.
Pointless.......2003-04-03
This book has no discernible value to anyone planning a dive trip to Belize. First, it does not tell you which dive sites are good and which are worth skipping. This makes it difficult to plan your trip, assuming you have limited time and money to spend. The book does not even contain a list of top 5 or 10 recommended sites in the country.
Second, the book has no information on costs or other logistical aspects of a dive trip. For example, it mentions that Dangriga is the departure point for diving certain reefs, but doesn't tell you that there are no dive shops in Dangriga: to do any diving around there, you have to go thru an out-of-town resort, which is highly inconvenient.
Third, the capsule descriptions of 66 specific dive sites -- the heart of the book -- don't tell you anything meaningful and are irrelevant anyway because dive shops, not customers, choose which sites are visited. (Customers can choose which area they want to go to, but the dive shops select the specific sites within that area.)
Finally, although the book was updated in June 2002, it ignores the fact that in October 2001, Hurricane Iris devastated the sourthern diving hub of Placencia. The reefs in this area are heavily damaged and therefore not worth visiting. The failure to update the book to account for this major development can only be explained by bad faith on the part of Lonely Planet, which should be ashamed to have put such a lousy product on the market.
Save your money.......2003-01-05
This book is not worth buying. It provides very little information on specific dive sites. I did not use the book once to make a dive choice during two weeks in Southern Belize. A good dive book for Belize is really needed - it was difficult to locate good dive operators for some areas...but this book was of no value.
It does have some nice pictures and a very basic fish/coral guide in the back.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.
Whether you're packing your snorkel to explore Palancar Reef (the second-longest barrier reef in the world), stocking extra film to explore the Toltec-Maya roots of Chichén Itzá, or toting your hiking boots to the volcanoes of Guatemala, this practical guide will help you get where you want to go. It features more than 100 maps; useful cultural, biological, and geographical footnotes; places to stay and eat for any budget; overviews of the major Mayan archaeological sites; and a handy glossary of Spanish and Mayan terms. This book also covers Chiapas, Tobasco, and the incredible ruins of Copán in Honduras. --Kathryn True

Lonely Planet Guatemala, Belize & Yucatan.......2001-01-21
While being a good general guide it is not, as others seem to believe, for those of you interested in getting "off the beaten path". You will end up visiting the same sites as the rest of the thousands that have purchased this book and others like it. Also, keep in mind that this book has not been updated in three years and is not to be relied upon heavily. I do believe the Lonely Planet series is quite helpful, but remember that you are the true judge of what you see and experience.
The straight stuff.......2000-05-25
This guide is packed with a ton of great info. This book is indespensible for those traveling off the beaten path in the Yucatan, from the colonial cities to Mayan pyramids hidden in the jungle. With out this book I would have missed what became some of the highlights of my trip!
THE BEST FOR TRAVEL IN THE YUCATAN.......2000-04-25
My husband and I used this book on both of our trips to Mexico and found it fabulous. Detailed maps of the major cities. It helped us get through Cancun, Chetumal and Merida which are difficult on your own - driving or walking. This book gave hotels and restaurants for all travel budgets and if ever in Merida, I recommend the Hotel Trinidad Galleria. Quite a sight! Also detailed the ruins and gave some background. This book gave good tips for traveling to other countries too. Highly recommended for Mexico traveling.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for my trip.......2007-06-08
I flew into Belize, took the bus up to Chetumal, Mexico on the border, then took the bus all the way down south into Guatemala (by boat). This book is ragged from me using it so much. Others borrowed it also. I wish it were a little more up to date.
Practical but a bit flawed .......2006-06-28
This Lonely Planet travel guide is valuable but flawed. Like the best Lonely Planet books, this November 2004 edition is concise, readable, and puts vital travel information at your fingertips. There's much information for budget travelers on local customs, possible hazards, changing currency, low-cost accommodations, transportation, getting to and from airports and bus terminals, etc. But this edition has a few weaknesses, which is not what you need when far from home. Several reviewers have noted that this guide has much out-of-date information on Belize. The book falls short in the maps department as well. A couple tiny maps could be added to show small towns near popular destinations to help travelers avoid getting off their bus at the wrong stop. The only map of Guatemala City doesn't show Zona 13 south of the airport where many hostels and cheap hotels are located. Also, the book warns about colder nights in the highlands but doesn't specify temperatures - a windbreaker was sufficient for a June visit.
Lonely Planet is usually a top-notch choice for backpackers and budget travelers, but this one falls a bit short in some areas.
I Wouldn't Even Give it ONE Star..........2004-12-10
This book is more than disappointing...
I used to have a lot of respect for Lonely Planet, as they took pride in sharing information for the average traveler about places that were usually off the beaten path.
However, I did not realize that they have stopped actually visiting these destinations.
I live on Caye Caulker, Belize.
The NEW book, which is their first reprint in over 4 years...has not been updated. They mention a grocery store that has been closed since 1999. They mention a deli that has been closed since 2000. The do NOT mention one new business....besides one restaurant. It is obvious Lonely Planet did not send one writer to Caye Caulker, Belize.
If they didn't take time to visit Caye Caulker ONCE in over 4 years, I can only assume the rest of the book is absolute garbage as well.
For a real Travel Book for Belize, check out Rough Guide by Peter Eltringham. He actually sends scouts out to every location before he visits. He does this to ensure that every place has a fair shot...and that they write about a real experience, not one based on a hotel or restaurant putting on a show for a known writer. Peter's writers do not announce they are writers.
That is what a real travel book should be.
Lonely Planet needs to quit relying on their name to sell books. Their information is completely outdated, and not worth your money.

I agree Very out of date!.......2004-06-25
I agree with the earlier reviewers this guide is way out of date, prices are not even close, and places that no longer exsist. This might have been a good guide a few years ago but I would not rely on it today!
Informative but prices are off.......2004-05-23
Lonely Planet guides are my favorite because they are thorough, informative, give lots of good info for reasonably priced traveling, and identify tons of both customary and adventurous things to do and see. This holds true for this edition however, I found that the prices were significantly higher than the book stated, the water taxi times had changed, and a car rental company mentioned did not have service in Belize-not too accurate.

A Diver's Cookbook.......2000-07-22
Diving and Snorkeling in Belize is for divers - as a pictured cookbook is for hungry people... A very good source for divers, novice through advanced. The Book starts by covering some basics for every tourist to Belize, then moves on to an overview of Belize as a scuba-diver's wonder-world. Following, all sites are described explicitly. The site descriptions include easy-to-follow rankings of expertise required and characteristics, as depth, currents, visibility, etc., and directions to unique attractions in each site. Throughout, beautiful pictures enhance this coverage. The book definitely played a part in the decision to visit Belize, and for divers - is a recommended addition to the Lonely Planet reference to this region.

Great book to bring along.......2005-02-17
Greatly enjoyed this book. Filled with useful information, but not so huge that its to heavy for the packpack.
Good overview of Belize.......2004-09-20
I thought this book was very helpful...my sister and I traveled throughout the country (with the exception of Placencia and the southern part of Belize) and over to Tikal, Guatemala and the info was pretty accurate. For a boat trip to Lamanai, the pricing was actually cheaper than what was listed in the book, and other prices were fairly consistent despite the book being a couple years old. The best advice if you are thinking about staying somewhere that is listed in the book is to check out the website (which is one of the best features of the book....many others I looked at did not include website information) and see pictures for yourself. If a website is not listed, it is often because it is new - I did a google search and was able to find a website or info for every place we stayed in Belize. We stayed at four different places during our week stay, all listed in Lonely Planet, and I was happy with each one. Another big plus to this book (particularly for me) was the info on precautions to take, and the full page warning on the botfly. A couple weeks after returning and after several doctors misdiagnosing it, I had a botfly larvae in my head, and it was something I read about in LP that I alerted the doctors about. It took a week and a hospital stay until I could find someone who would believe me, but I can't imagine how long it would have taken if I hadn't had this info beforehand! I was very happy overall with this guidebook and despite the botfly, would return to Belize again.
Most updated, cultural.......2003-05-13
We used this and while, yes, last year's hurricane did make some of the information less relevant, this was still the most up-to-date guide in our party. I particularly enjoyed the cultural focus, which is really why I travel, anyway.
The book is colorful, contains lots of interesting details, and was actually easier to read than some of the others we had. I had no trouble with the hotel listings.
For those traveling to Placencia.......2003-04-01
For those people planning on traveling to the southern parts of Belize, be forewarned that the Lonely Planet guidebook has not been updated since the hurricane destroyed much of Placencia a year and a half ago.
We stayed in Placencia for a week using the Lonely Planet guide, and some of the restaurants and accommidations listed no longer exist. The places that do still exist have been totally rebuilt since the reviews were written.
Finally, the activities listings were generally accurate but the reccommended guides no longer offered the services described in the book. We went out of our way to find the reccommended guide only to discover he no longer gave tours!
Hotel Info not accurate.......2003-03-19
I booked and prepaid Ruby's in Ambergris Quay on their recommendation, and found it to be an absolute dump, full of cockroaches, grimy throughout. There were many better choices for the same price which were not in the book. But a hotel they criticised, La Casa de Don David near Tikal, we found to be spotless, reasonably priced, good food and very convenient for visiting the ruins. This definitely brings into question the integrity of their hotel ratings and the independence of their recommendations.
