Customer Reviews:
Excellent Travel Resource.......2007-01-07
This guide was indespensible throughout the travel in Copenhagen and vicinity. Great attention to detail and precise and timely information made it a great asset as a travel guide. Additionally, information on excursions to Sweden and the island of Zealand made this guide a "must-have" when in Denmark.
"Yuppie Guide".......2005-04-04
As with the only other Sally O'Brian authored-guide that I've used (for Sydney, Australia), this guide leaves much to be desired. Concentrating on trendy hotels, restaurants and bars, this guide gives short shrift to the sights, museums and history of Copenhagen. This guide also dispenses with the section on "Getting There", "Getting Around", and such that used to make Lonely Planets the most useful guide out there. This is more like a Fodors for the pretentious than a good guide to Copenhagen.
If this is the new format, I fear for the Lonely Planet series. One would be better off with a "Let's-Go"

Tell me something I don't know..........2005-09-02
I have used Lonely Planet guide books in many countries and find them to be the superior guide book for all destinations... in the third world. Lonely Planet falls short in Europe and this book, Lonely Planet Denmark, is no exception. This book reads like a Let's Go travel guide; one doesn't need a guide book to find pizza and kebab shops anywhere in the world, especially in Denmark where they proliferate as cheap eats. What I look for is a guide to the out of the ordinary, as well as the places and food establishments that are unique to the country I'm visiting. This book lacks that depth of research and proved to be little more than unnecessary weigh in my luggage.
Furthermore, the book is organized differently from previous Lonely Planet books I've owned (including the previous edition of this very book) which made finding information difficult for those of us accustomed to using these guide books. At the same time the revisions added no benefits I could see. I'm still looking for a good guide book publisher for Europe. Any suggestions??

Good information with a lack on enthusiasm.......2007-03-13
I've found the information in this book very handy, but I couldn't help but feel that the author and his predecessors didn't enjoy their time in Finland. Ok, ok, so I've been bored in Finland too. But that's why I buy a guidebook... to turn me on to those hidden gems in the country that I might not have noticed otherwise. This book left me feeling that there weren't any hidden gems... there are obvious gems and then some boring industrial wastelands. But apart from this lack of enthusiasm for the country, I didn't notice any wrong information and the sections on major cities have turned out to be extremely handy (especially the maps).
Not as inspiring as the cover would indicate!.......2004-08-29
To put this review in context - my wife and I travelled to Sweden and Finland this summer. She has family in both countries who we visited and stayed with. Much of the time was spent in rural Finland (Kuusamo and region). Our home is Thunder Bay, which is a small pulp-and-paper city (100 000) in rural Ontario.
The Lonely Planet guides are well-known (at least among my travelling friends) as including a little bit of everything - culture, entertainment, restaurants, and places to stay. Because Finland is a young and sparsely-populated country, it turns out that there aren't a lot of castles or museums or cathedrals to see, and those that are there are not as impressive (generally) as their counterparts in Sweden. No, the reason to go to Finland, according to this guide, is the nature, parks, wildlife, etc.
Normally this kind of thing is very inspiring, and the book makes it sound interesting. However, this is exactly the kind of thing we can do at home - provincial parks, downhill and cross-country skiing, and moose crossing the road are all part of our normal existence. Why would we go to Finland to experience these things? This is the nature of the country, of course, which the editors of the Lonely Planet series cannot control. However, reading the book did not give me any particular desire to go to Finland had I not been planning to go anyways. It seems like the editors may as well have summed it up as "It's a great place to live, although a little dull to visit." In reality, the country is much more interesting than the book would have led me to believe.
Having badmouthed the general aspects, I do want to praise the section on Helsinki. Here the guidebook shines and we toured the city and the sites based on the well-documented walking/biking tour. It is a fantastic way to view the city and made the purchase cost of the book well worthwhile. We saw much more of the city than we would otherwise have been able to. Likewise, as visitors to Scandanavia will likely have noticed, there is a dearth of mid-range eating places (pubs, "family restaurants", etc.) in Scandanavian cities, so we relied on this book to find a place to eat, which again was exactly as described. In that restaurant, we were planning our next move when in walked another couple with the same guidebook, sitting at the table next to us. Obviously they were finding the book useful as well!
Great book!.......2003-03-06
I visited this country with my Finnish boyfriend in 2002. THe book was a great help. It helped me decide which tourist spots, shopping areas, historical sites and places of interest to check out. The only part that I didn't like was that it didn't touch too much on the smaller cities of Finland, but in general, it's a good buy. Definitely worth it, but make sure you get "Culture Shock, Guide to Finland" if you do travel to Suomi. Having a cultural view of this beautiful country is important.
Lots of maps and pretty facts..........2003-02-08
But if you happen to be in Finland, the only thing you'll need to sample is the local alcoholic beverages.
Essential really.......2001-05-17
I've just been to Helsinki for a few days, and although I didn't get the chance to test this book's usefulness in other parts of the country, it certainly proved worth having just for Helsinki. It tells you all the basic stuff, and some of the interesting stuff. I was able to get from the airport by bus and walk to my hotel from the bus station simply by glancing at the book on the flight to Helsinki. Everything is very clear and nicely laid out, and it's a handy size too. I hope I'll return to Finland; this is the first thing I'll pack.

Reliable guide to an exciting city!.......2001-10-18
This book was extremely informative, all information is clear and concise and was easy to navigate through.
We wanted an easy to use, novice guide on what to do/where to go/what to see/where & what to eat etc. for a short break in the city and this book told us everything we wanted to know & more.
This helped us to plan a full itinerary for our trip prior to us arriving - and therefore, helped us to not waste a minute of our precious holiday time!
Have nothing really bad to say about the publication - it is well written, interesting & informative; without being too detailed/long-winded.
Would appeal greatly to music lovers - as it has a special section devoted to the famous Jazz Festival.

Customer Reviews:
Unreliable information. Very disappointed........2006-11-10
Sometimes I wonder if LP is getting complacent because of their brand name and is not doing as good a job validating the information published. I used this guide in my recent travel to 4 countries in the Scandinavia. For every country, at least 50% of the information on cafes/restaurants/hotels were incorrect. Eg. in Helsinki, I went to 4 restaurants listed on the book. Out of 4, only 1 is correct. The other 3 have either closed down, moved or changed owners and is no longer serving what the guide describes. The friend who was travelling with me even asked me to toss the guidebook away, after the time we've wasted getting to all the restaurants/cafes that no longer exists. In my final stop, Norway, I was really hesitant to use the guide further, as it made so many mistakes. I did use it one more time to book the Norway-In-A-Nutshell package as per the book's recommendation and directions. What I found out later, through other travellers, was that it is better to book this at the train station and each leg separately, rather than as a package. By booking each leg separately, you can easily save up to Kr 400 (which is ~ USD 65, Euro 50). The amount of effort and time to do either is the same. I am hugely disappointed by LP's efforts in research and updating the information they publish.
Hostel Listings.......2004-01-05
Lets face it this book is for backpackers trying to sqeeze by in an expensive place like Scandinavia. If you want to read about the region than your going to need another book. Outside the major citites this book probably lacks coverage but in the cities it is a completely different story. I did some major hosteling in Scandinavia due to budget constraints. Many of these hostels were the nicest ones I have ever seen. If you want to hostel around Scandinavia this book is the most useful lonely planet I have yet to purchase out a dozen or so.
do not get this guide. no details.......2003-12-08
After using several Lonely Planet books, I was thoroughly disappointed with this guide. The guide stuffs Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Do that many people hit Greenland and the main Scandinavian countries in the same trip to justify putting it in the same book? The result is that the book is short on detail, even the basic "Things to Do" that you can find in a competing Scandinvian guide. The guide is about 1/3 the size of just the Finland book, but about the same price.

Biking in Denmark.......2001-02-21
We took our bikes to Denmark with us and rode around the country. We found this book very helpful. The hours and directions, and descriptions were quite accurate. Most things were rather expensive. The book give good background on historical places and interesting tidbits to checkout. I think that it is an essential book to bring with if you are traveling there. If you do plan to go biking - good luck finding good biking maps - we never found any!
Great for budget travelers.......2000-03-30
Having traveled through SEA,Japan,Korea, and Latin America, and now Denmark with lp books, I am a loyal fan. The books do a great job of providing key information without being too chatty, pointing out cheap accomodations, and giving me all the info I need to figure out my own way around a country. The book on Denmark seemed fairly up to date and accurate. I primarily use the book as a starting point from which to get an idea of where I wanted to go, and it was great for that purpose. For anyone who wants to travel low-impact and low-budget in Scandinavia, I highly recommend lp Denmark.
