Big Island Guide.......2007-06-18

I have used this book on three visits to the Big Island. Insider's perspective has been valuable on where to go eat and where to see some of the impressive sights. I finally rented a 4 WD drive and did the Saddle Back Rd. and Mauna Kea summit tour. Saddle Back Rd. is not as severe as the book describes and can be used without much risk as mentioned in the book to go between Waikoloa and Hilo. If you plan to go to the summit of Mauna Kea, you should use a 4WD vehicle with authorization from your rental company contract to do it. We used the local rental agency, Harper Autos, who will let you go to the summit. Spectacular views.

Hands down this is the best book on Hawaii! Tons of helpful information, guides, maps, and reviews.

If you want to really see the hidden places in Hawaii, befriend a local. Some are very private and don't want tourists on the island at all (even though tourism makes up over 60% off their economy). But some love to tell stories of growing up there and will fill you in on where to go. Based on this book and local's recommendations, we had some truly unique experiences.

The best part of the book is the detailed instructions on where to go, as well as little things that really enhance your trip (like what part of a certain beach is really good for snorkeling).

My top 3 recommendations are: Kenichi Pacific Japanese Cuisine located in the Keahou Shopping Center, Snorkeling in Kealekekua (spelled wrong I'm sure), and the Hummer tour up in Hawi (pronounced Ha-vee).

I don't think this book 'reveals' too much. All the locations that are 'on' private property are ones that you can still legally get to. The book doesn't encourage breaking the law and offers some very sound advice. For instance- cops are few and far between, but they will nail you for little things like not wearing a seatbelt. Locals/visitors flash their headlights to warn other cars of a nearby cop. Also, don't leave valuables in your car, they will get stolen. The advice is endless.

More than helpful guide for my trip. Used the maps and food guides as well as the activities vendor listing throughout and managed to be surprised at accurate reviews. Wished I knew about the website before I left to get updated information, but only 1 item needed to be changed for my trip.

Excellent guide for my vacation in Hawaii.......2007-05-21

We just got back from our trip to Hawaii and I have to say that this book made our vacation fantastic! We used this book to get to places off the beaten path, which really helped us enjoy our vacation even more. It contained maps to various locations (although we still purchased and used a regular map as well). It gave us clear directions to may 'off road' destinations such as the green sand beach and some other beaches.

All-in-all, I HIGHLY recommend this book and was money well spent.

Don't go to Hawaii without it!.......2007-05-21

This book is not your typical travel guide. It is not only well written, but full of fun. We took advantage of a great deal of information found in the book and had the best vacation of our lives. I will buy whatever is the most current edition when we return and will not go to any of the other islands without a "Revealed" book!

Beautiful book! Some of the photos are of areas we couldn't get close enough to take. My only question is...when will the books for the other islands be published?

A Stunning Tour into Paradise and Beyond.......2006-11-05

"This is a land that has ten of the world's fifteen types of climatic zones," so writes Andrew Doughty in the Introduction of HAWAII DREAMSCAPES REVEALED, a stunning collection of photos of the "Big Island."

I went to Oahu a few years ago and was completely blown away by the beaches, the mountains, the ocean. It is one of the few places that not only lives up to the photographs but actually surpasses them in many ways. Paul Theroux, the international best-selling author of "The Mosquito Coast" and some of the greatest travel narratives of all time, moved to Hawaii after kayaking around the islands for his book, "The Happy Isles of Oceana"--and this was a guy who has literally been EVERYWHERE. (He went on to write "Hotel Honolulu" as well). So obviously these are enchanting islands that can get under your skin and draw you back.

I expected great photography of the beaches and lava in HAWAII DREAMSCAPES REVEALED but I was also blown away by other unexpected scenes: an empty black beach covered by so many white pieces of coral that it looks like patches of snow, a cattle ranch beneath a range of mountains that HAS snow on its peaks (in Hawaii!), a high-altitude terrain above the clouds that looks like the surface of Mars. There's one wild shot of lava cooling in smooth orbs on the ground (I expected the liquid-metal Terminator to stand up out of them).

The shots of lush forests and waterfalls and reefs are also striking and well-chosen.

I will definitely be getting the Oahu volume since I'd like to see what this photography couple have done with an island I've seen.

From what they've shown me of the Big Island, I will try to go back someday soon.

There are two types of travel books. The first has interesting photos, but writing which either detracts, or does not add to the experience. The second has competent writing, but photos you've seen a million times.

This book is neither.

This is one of the most exquisite books I've ever read.

Clearly, the writer and photographers of "Hawaii Dreamscapes Revealed" have found the beautiful and the savage, the profound and the simple, the dream and the reality. And even more amazingly, they share their extensive knowledge with their readers. Open this book to any page and you'll be astounded at the authors' breathtaking slant on one of the most incredible places in the world.

Yet this is not your typical book of pretty photographs of palm trees in Hawaii. Truly, I've never seen anything like this. Their renderings of snow clouds beneath your feet, wild goats, beaches glittering with gems, jungle flowers, hellish fumes, driftwood, and mountains leave the reader wondering, "Where on earth is this place?"
