    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-06-12

I purchased this book to help me with my family trip. It was quite helpful when I don't know how to say certain
things. I was able to learn how to ask for directions during our driving trips to Tuscany town. I was able to purchase fresh grocery, order food.

I also learn some Italian from the CDs I purchased from Amazon.

I highly recommend this book. My children picked up some Italian, too.

5 out of 5 stars Came in handy for all sorts of scenarios you'll enounter..........2007-04-10

I travelled alone in Italy for one week, and this little book was so helpful...referenced it again and again during my visit. It came in handy for practical situations travelers always encounter...directions, menu verbiage, and basic conversation with locals.
It also helped in more specific situations...for women traveling, this will help you formulate quick responses to the "ciao bellas" you'll receive. Bene!

1 out of 5 stars Potty Mouth Phrases.......2007-03-09

I thought this would be a great way for my 10 year old and me to learn a few phrases before our trip to Italy. This would have been fine if I was 20 years younger and traveling with a bunch of free loving hippies. Using this book, I can use pick up someone up at a bar, ask for a condom, let everyone know I brought my own needle and call people derogatory names. Sure, I can learn to order spaghetti for dinner, but this is definitely not what I was expecting. In the future, I will have to read over a phrase book in person before purchasing.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Language.......2007-01-16

This little book is magic, is clear, easy to understand. It going to help us a lot in our trip.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite pocketbook!.......2006-09-13

i carry it everywhere, when in the states or italy- great and easy set-up, extremely comprehensible pronouciation tips and helpful/useful blurbs about not-so-well-know (by the outside world) cultural practices, lingo, actions, etc. pleanty of categories, and explanations that make learning bits and peices easier to understand- cant say enough good!

4 out of 5 stars French: Lonely Planet Phrasebook.......2007-05-19

The book is very useful for traveling...as expected from a lonely planet speech book. However, it would be better with an audioguide to pronounce it correctly.

5 out of 5 stars Useful in all situations.......2006-12-06

I got this book as a gift before going to Paris for a month and after taking one quarter of French at school. This book is so useful in very many situations! With my basic skills in pronunciation and grammar, this book carried me through at restaurants, metro stations, going out, etc. The two-way dictionary is also great because I had French people look up words they didn't know in English. There's also a funny romance section that I don't know if you would ever use, but it's a great read and my French friends love it as well. Overall I would recommend this phrasebook if you're going to France for a short trip and as long as you learn some basic pronunciation you should be fine!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to get around!!!!!.......2006-03-10

I was in Paris and with the phonetic pronunciation of phases the Parisians would understand us completely. I was so surprised!!! This book was very helpful and I would recommend it to anybody who needs to get around in France. I just bought the Italian version for my next trip!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2005-04-23

Right now i am currently studying French independently before i begin a French I class in school. And so far, I find this book to be very useful in using common phrases, as well as having facts about the grammar. And what's great is how this book tells the pronunciation of all the words in its dictionary, and for some reason that is something that many dictionaries lack, considering that the French language has the most difficulty in pronunciation! I wish French dictionaries were that convient. All in all, if you want to learn French phrases, or trying to have a little bit of knowledge about the French language before being taught, or you are already a French speaker and just want to brush up, this book is excellent! Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great Help in Learning Spanish.......2007-05-13

Mexican Spanish is a book I bought because I live in an area where there are many Mexican people. I have been trying to learn enough of their language to "get by". This book could be a tremendous help.

However, it is printed in very small print, as the book itself is pocket sized, a nice size to carry with me. The small print is understandable but the pastel colors of the text is more than difficult to read, especially since the print is so tiny. I think whoever put this book together was going for "attractive" but what I need most is black text!

Otherwise, I would reccommend this book to anyone who has some Spanish, surely not to someone who has not done at least a little studying of the language.

The book is well designed, just, harping on it again, the text needs to be black or at least dark red, navy blue, dark brown, dark green - to differentiate subjects. It is almost impossible to see the tildes and accent marks. One needs a magnifying glass! The italics that are supposed to tell one which syllable of the words must be accented for correct pronounciation, again, are almost impossible to detect.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Refresher.......2007-04-01

I used to speak pretty fluent Spanish when I was in high school, but with years of neglect and non-use, I've become a bit rusty. This book is a great refresher on key phrases and structure, and will fit in your pocket quite easily.
Don't expect to have a long, involved conversation using this book (only reason I gave this a 4), but if you're going on a trip, there are plenty of phrases to help you out in MANY types of situations. The scenarios in this book are QUITE comprehensive. I also have the Lonely Planet Japanese handbook which is also quite good.

5 out of 5 stars So handy, I bought two........2007-01-12

This little book is packed with valuable information and advise when traveling in Mexico.I found the phrases useful and adequate. The book covers every thing from buying groceries to ending up in the Doctor's office. The size of the book is also a plus since it fits into small purses and fanny packs. In 06,I spent a month in Mexico going to village to village and found this book immensley helpful. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Don't go to Mexico without it!.......2006-05-13

My wife and I went to Mexico to get married and we are not Spanish speakers. This handy book is first class and here are the reasons why:-

The book is small enough to easily fit into a coat or shirt pocket.

It has drawings of common situations with arrows pointing at items in the drawing with the Mexican word highlighted (how much easier could they make it)

The sections in the book are colour coordinated according to the situations you may find yourself (reservations,dining,partying... etc. Flick to the section and then use the obvious sentences to converse around the subject.

Pronunciation and grammar are explained clearly at the start of the book and all the words in the book are laid out phonetically (the only way you are going to get this wrong is if you can't read)

In conclusion, a first class guide, when we showed the book to the locals in Mexico they wanted to know if they could buy it in Mexico as they didn't think they could. They loved the pictures and even chipped in to help with correct pronunciation if we went astray.

The Mexican slang in the book is spot on, the Mexicans couldn't believe that some of the words were in the book.

When I go back to Mexico this book will be in my pocket, don't leave home without it.

    Highly recommended

3 out of 5 stars Reasonably good Mexican Spanish, TERRIBLE pronunciation guide.......2005-09-16

This handy new phrasebook is MUCH closer to the Mexican Spanish being spoken today than any other I have found. It's actually pretty good, BUT the pronunciation guide is very, very bad for anyone from the central/western US or western Canada. If you're from those areas and don't already have some idea of correct Spanish pronunciation, avoid this phrasebook.

I think the authors must have had some idea about this in advance, since they tell you, "Don't worry too much about pronunciation." That of course is totally wrong. Spanish is one of the world's almost perfectly phonetic languages and pronunciation is the MOST important thing about being understood.

Thailand is the Land of Smiles. A grin shows companionship. A laugh shows forgiveness. But what if you need a second-class train ticket from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? Keep smiling - this phrasebook will show you the way.<BR> <BR> <B>DID YOU KNOW?</B><BR> When people talk about the Thai language they are really referring to a Central Thai dialect that has succeeded in becoming the standard official language for the whole country. For this reason Thai is only spoken as a first language in the central provinces of the nation. As Thai is the official language of education, government and media it's basically understood from North to South although recent estimates suggest that less than half the population of Thailand speak and understand Thai fluently.

    4 out of 5 stars Pocket Perfect.......2007-05-13

This is an excellent phrase book, easy to carry, easy to read and broken into easy to find section. Combined with a short language program this book carried me across Thailand comfortably. I mentione the language program because the pronunciation is a bit tricky to break down phonetically, altho Lonely Planet does a great job of it. I have used lonely planet phrase books for all of Asia and Northern Africa, but I must admit I use Rick Steve's phrase books for European travel. Lonely Planet Guide Books are also very good, especially for the bargain traveler.

    4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-10

This book has several great features.
-It is small and easy to fit in a pocket, bag etc.
-It has the words written out in thai. Without hearing and practicing pronunciation I find it very hard to get the tones and accent right. When people give me a blank look I can just point. VERY helpful. Especially considering that Thai words written in the roman alphabet make no sense to Thai people.
-It covers all sorts of situations. Basic travel needs like getting around, buying things, to dealing with medical problems, and even to pick-up lines
-some of the situations are so absurd (in that the average person would know a lot more thai or be dealing with an english speaker before that would happen) that it makes a great conversation piece hanging around the hostel. "Oh, yeah, well I know how to say 'don't worry, it happens to lots of guys. Beat that!'

If you're not looking to actually learn thai, but just want some help getting around and trying not to be the Ugly American, then I recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars easy to use.......2007-03-31

I bought this book because it's small and you can carry it with you on your trips. it's easy to use and understand as well. great book if you're just vacationing and want to learn enough to get around the country.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-28

The best part about this book is the pronunciation guide. Thai can be tricky with all the tones, this book made it very simple to understand. If anything the sex and drug sections can just be for entertainment. I tried out these phrases just for fun, never seriously used them. Good for a laugh. Several Thai people have asked me to send them a copy.

1 out of 5 stars SOCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE !!!.......2006-10-02

This book has a section called "What's your poison" which gives translations for several illegal drugs. It also describes how to ask for a clean syringe. Drugs are illegal in Thailand, but this book helps to promote their use by providing these translations.

I picked up Conversational Brazilian Portuguese: Learn to Speak and Understand Portuguese with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's Pimsleur), in audio and learned a lot. It helps to have some spanish lessons when you were young. This book was a nice addition to my base, and it came in handy more than a few times once I was in Brazil.

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful.......2006-08-21

I just returned from a trip to Brazil, and though I know some Spanish, I had no previous exposure to Portuguese. This phrasebook proved invaluable in helping me bridge the gap, and contributed to me having an even better time, and blending in better with the locals.

    3 out of 5 stars Passable.......2006-03-14

Beware of serious pronunciation errors in this book. Although it was overall pretty useful, there were some glaring errors in areas where there likely shouldn't have been. Case in point, the phonetic pronunciation for tchau (goodbye) in the book is spelled out as "tee-show." At least in Bahia, it was pronounced by the locals just like the Italian "ciao." The word "vinte" (twenty) is spelled out "veeng-te" in the book, while again everyone we encountered in Bahia pronounced it "veen-chay." I don't know if these are regional differences in Brazilian Portuguese, but if so, they need to at least be addressed in the book. Take care when using the phrasebook to listen to the local speakers as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best Brazilian Portuguese phrase book I've found!.......2006-03-03

I'm just a lonely writer wanna-be in the heart of the middle of nowhere, so what do I choose to write -- a period piece of Brazil. I can't even begin to praise this book enough. Not only do I get phrases and words, but there are all sorts of little historical and cultural details.

I will probably never travel to Brazil, but this little book is allowing my imagination to have a trip!

3 out of 5 stars Initially seemed great, but turned out NOT to be useful.......2007-02-02

I bought it with a great enthusiasm but when I arrived at Morocco I discovered that the book is not useful for some reasons. I traveled around Morocco on bicycle for 2 weeks but learnt only very few phrases from this book. I suspect something is wrong with the structure of this phrasebook.

5 out of 5 stars Zuina Bezzaf - MUST READ BOOK!.......2005-05-24

This book was GREAT! It's the best one out there, and it's a Fantastic price. So much information, helpful phrases, easy word spelling for prnounciation. This book was so helpful and yet so simple, it takes you from basic topics such as "Religion" "People" "Places" "Transportation" "Feelings" and so many other topics. This is a must read book. And it's so small, you can bring it anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars The best choice (of 2) for travel needs and tourists..........2005-02-16

Okay, so there are really only two books out there that I know of which will teach you anything about Moroccan Arabic: this handy little pocket-sized phrase book and the big, green, more academic text called "A Basic Course in Moroccan Arabic." The choice between the two is clear, with the Lonely Planet book being the obvious choice for the thousands of us who just plan on going to Morocco for a short visit as a tourist or on business. The other book would probably be a better choice if you plan on living in Morocco and need to know the grammar and truly gain some in-depth knowledge, though the LP phrasebook would probably be a good place to start anyway.

This "Moroccan Arabic Phrasebook" has most of what you will need for a short junket, with the usual smattering of vocabulary on food, clothes, medical problems, directions, hotels and airports. To add some criticism, since no book is perfect, I would mention that the glossary is only English-->Moroccan, so if someone tells you a word in "darija" you will have no way to look it up and find its equivalent in English. I really don't see the point of putting everything in Arabic script either, since Moroccan Arabic is never written down and the target audience won't be reading anything in Arabic anyway! Maybe just including a description of the alphabet in an appendix would suffice. As usual, there are always some things you need but cannot find (typically "where is the bathroom?", though I think LP included that this time!)...

I had a great time with some Moroccans at a party using the phrasebook: None of them spoke any French or English, so I played charades by acting like I was one of the animals listed in the book and I knew that they were guessing the right animal, since I had the name in the book in front of me. Cheezy-sounding, but believe me, when you have no way to communicate with anyone around you, desperation sets in! Which is where this great phrasebook will come in handy!

4 out of 5 stars Well, it sure impressed my Moroccan HUSBAND!.......2001-01-25

My husband and I have both gone over the book and were quite suprised and pleased at the accuracy. Moroccan arabic is a VERY different dialect from the traditional and Egyptian arabic, so if you are hoping to use this book to communicate with other arabic speakers that are NOT from Morocco, forget it. They will not understand you(although, some Algerians and Tunisians might as many Moroccans live there and the language is a little similar), so don't buy it if you want to communicate with non-Moroccans. I bought the travel pack which included the book, audio cassette and a little lesson book, that doubles as the cassettes's cover. Although, it is true: it is not for conversations or to learn the actual language from; it is mainly travel dialog and gettin' around stuff to say but I have in a pinch been able to use it on my husband with fantastic results. NOTE: this dialect is not spoken all through Morocco. There are several dialects of arabic spoken there. This particular dialect is spoken in Casablanca, Agadir and around there-'bouts. Different regions speak different dialects but most Moroccans should be able to understand you, from what my hubby says. I did have a couple of disappointments though; for one, the book's transliteration is a little strange on some of the words but nothing crucial, you will still be understood. I read arabic and some pages includes the arabic script of the sentences, so I could read that and understand more. Secondly, I wish there was MORE dialog or a part 2!! Third, if you buy the cassette with it, sadly, it does NOT cover anything in the book. My husband and I agree that it is an excellent book and well worth the price but if it is too hard for you to learn it and you are going to Morocco: learn Spanish or French. At least 95% of the population knows them as they are considered the main 4 languages of the land: Arabic, French, Spanish(Spain dialect-not Mexican Spanish), and Berber. If you are getting it to learn for a Moroccan husband or boyfriend, it will slightly help but you will not learn the language or how to speak to him from this book but it's a good reference to have on hand anyway! It has helped me! (get the cassette, too!)

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book to impress your Moroccan boyfriend........2000-08-18

This book provides a lot of fun facts that make it easy to understand the Moroccan language, as well as culture. There is an easy-to-use pronunciation guide to get any beginner started, though some of the suggested sounds to make while attempting to pronounce certain phrases are difficult to master. This book seems to encompass what one would need to know for their basic travel needs, and most of what it does not cover in its text, it covers in its dictionary. This book is ideal for traveling due also to its small size. However, I would not recommend purchasing it for the purpose of attempting to communicate with your ESL (English as a Second Language) boyfriend, whom you cannot understand otherwise, because it probably won't be too helpful.

(Especially if he dumps you because you can in no way marry him sometime in the near future).

5 out of 5 stars Swahili: Lonely Planet Phrasebook.......2007-06-18

For a compact book on Swahili this is the best I've seen. The contents of this little gem were easily divided into useful and practical sections, covering a broader use of the language than I've come across in other similar type books. Each section was uniquely and clearly identifiable allowing faster access to put your fingertips on the words or phrases you need. This book also succeeds in helping the reader obtain a basic yet concrete understanding of the Swahili language where other similar books have attempted but failed.

5 out of 5 stars Very well built up - simple to use!.......2007-03-21

This course to teach yourself Swahili is easy for anybody - all you need is to take time and study.

5 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive resource.......2007-03-19

This small hand-sized book is an excellent resource. Sections are seperated by practical categories (like food, social, and practical). Very easy to read, and really has everything you would need to get around.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to have! .......2007-01-01

I had this guide when I went to Kenya, and I highly recommend it! It was very useful when I got very ill and needed to explain to a Swahili speaking doctor what was wrong with me. I also used it when I'd go to the Masai Markets and I always got a much better deal when I'd barter in Swahili. The Kenyans can speak English, but they appreciate it when you try to speak to them in Swahili.

I loved this guide so much I am buying copies for the members of my family who will be joining me for a holiday in Kenya this coming year.

It's an absolute must for any traveler!

    5 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL.......2005-08-12

The highlights of this book is that it contains not only the dictionaries and useful phrases but also good explanation of grammar which makes understanding easier. Can't learn a language without grammar. They also try not to complicate by teaching "survival Swahili".

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-04-14

I'm married to an Ethiopian and have found this book to be a lifesaver each and every time I go to Ethiopia. The book gets you close enough to the correct pronunciation that anyone can half way understand you and correct your pronunciation of the words. Although Tigrinyan's are now in power Amharic is still the national language of Ethiopia so it's better to learn Amharic if you plan on speaking to anyone in Ethiopia.

4 out of 5 stars Amharic usefulness depends on where you are.......2006-03-16

Actually I didn't use the book very much, as my surroundings were almost all English or Oromo-speaking. Before spending much time on a learning a language to use in Ethiopia, be sure to check out the location. Since the Amhara's are no longer the dominant tribe, their language may be less useful. Tigrayans are now in power and Oromo are the largest language group.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Ethiopian Amharic Phrasebook .......2005-11-24

This book is excellent! I don't understand some of the reviews.
It is a rare book that promotes Ethiopia and its culture. It is intended for foreign travellers to Ethiopia and not for Ethiopians who live abroad. I have travelled to Ethiopia with this book and found it very useful. I don't know what I would have done without it. I found the cultural info very useful. I think no other phrasebook offers this kind of info.

    1 out of 5 stars Completely Useless!.......2005-01-06

This guide is terrible if your goal is to speak Amharic. The Achilles heel of this book is that there are no accent marks on the ethiopian phrases. If you read what is in the book there is no way you will come close to saying anything intelligible. On the positive side, all of my Ethiopian friends found this book very helpful for learning English.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely basic. It'll leave you counting and saying 'Hi'.......2004-06-06

Don't expect much from this. This is really more a waste of time than anything else. If you're travelling to Ethiopia, and you speak english, then you really don't have to worry. Many Ethiopians speak english, and many of the signs are in english/amharic.

What use is it to learn how to count, or say hi, when you'll need to speak english to communicate anyhow?

4 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Egyptian Arabic.......2007-03-23

This is a very well thought out and nicely organized book. Any student of Egyptian Arabic will like this phrasebook, and the illustrations inside of the book offer casual entertainment while the reader continues to learn Egyptian Arabic. I admit that I was disappointed to read that the author started to include sexual words and phrases, then backed out of doing it. It really would have been a lot of fun to learn how to say some of those things that were deleted from the final text.

4 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Egyptian Arabic Phrasebook.......2006-11-03

An excellent and handy little book that is easy to carry and contains a lot of very useful information especially when one is at a loss for a phrase or a word. It helped jog my memory because, as a youth, I was once fluent in colloquial Egyptian Arabic but regretably no more.

    5 out of 5 stars Egyptian-Arabic This Book is a Must !!!!.......2006-08-19

This book is outstanding! It gives you everything that you will need. One thing I would advise is to couple it with something audible because the Egyptian language is very particular in pronunciations. Most of their vowel sounds are quite a bit different from English. Just one slip of the tongue and you could be saying "I want to go to the bathroom" or "I want to eat pigeon"

5 out of 5 stars Don't Go To Egypt Without This!!!!.......2006-06-27

I love this book!!! When in Egypt this June, I used it to my heart's content. Thanks to this book, I have learned very much in speaking the Arabic language. Being a student of Arabic, I found this small phrasebook even more efficient in teaching me than my textbook from school! It is simply awesome. Although the grammar could have been talked about more, I found this book a life-saver in many situations while being in North Africa. This book will teach you pronunciation, the Arabic alphabet, numbers, and thousands of useful phrases whilst in Egypt. The best Arabic-learning tool out there!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Arabic Phrasebook!.......2005-09-05

This is one of the most thorough, and easy to use Arabic phrasebooks I have ever used. Covers traveler's issues (tickets, directions, hotels, etc), but also includes food/eating, health/emergencies, entertainment, general conversation, and other everyday topics as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who will be visiting or living in Arabic-speaking parts of the world. Great for students of Arabic as well.

5 out of 5 stars Phrasebook for Australia.......2004-12-06

Lonely Planet's "Australian Phrasebook" is a great introduction to the Australian way of life and speaking for foreigners. Whether you are a tourist going on a trip to the land of Aussies, or a person studying English as used in Australia, this can be a good guide and reading supplement. Traditionally to Lonely Planet phrasebooks, this one gives you a short and easy-read introduction to the origin of Australian English. Then follow the sections dealing with present-day Australian English, Australian culture and regional languages.

Firstly, you get acquainted with phonetic and grammar features of Australian English, with British, American and Aboriginal influences, regional varieties of English in this huge country and some borrowings. Here you will also find out how to greet people, get around with Aussie English, and catch the most important colloquial phrases. You will even been able to join the Australians singing their national songs. After you've enriched your general vocabulary it is possible to get to know more about Australian culture and institutions: food and drink, party-culture, sports, urban and rural talk. Whether you'd like to find your way in coffee types or the art of argument "Australian Phrasebook" is helpful enough. It even gives you the recipes of the most popular dishes, so that next time you can throw an Australian party yourself, or just feel sure when ordering damper, pavlova and hedgehog.

The regional section gives you a thorough cultural and linguistic insight into numerous aboriginal languages. Here you will read a lot about the culture of indigenous people, as well as find rather short lists of major words you may encounter during your visit to the inner parts of the country. But, unlike the same sections in "British" or "USA" phrasebooks, the "Australian" one does not let you more or less exchange basic phrases with the Aborigines.

The strong feature of "Australian Phrasebook" is a great number of examples, comprehensive lists of words and expressions, extensive coverage of spoken language. Written in a simple language and entertaining manner, while being very informative "Australian Phrasebook" is a must-have on your next trip to the land Down Under and will certainly be your good companion, which will easily fit in a pocket.

5 out of 5 stars Fair dinkum, this is a great book!.......1999-05-28

As an expatriate Aussie searching for a guide to everyday Aussie slang to show my Canadian friends, I can say that this is by far the best one I've seen - and essential if you want to order a beer in Oz! Its section on Australian Aboriginal culture and languages is also excellent and informative for non-Aboriginal Australians as well as visitors - it was put together by a group of respected Australian linguists.

5 out of 5 stars Heading to Australia, have a squizz at this........1999-05-22

I'm an Aussie who was given this book as part of a going away present. I am living in America for a year. The night before I left my sister and I read to each other parts of this book. We were both in stiches, laughing at parts of our culture, colloquial expressions, and Aussie English which we normally don't give a second thought. This Phrasebook really gives a good insight to many of our 'ways' and explains what we are saying half the time. Is it necessary? Well I know if I speak in America the same way I speak at home no one can understand me! So yes, grab this book if you are heading to Australia, or are just interested in our lifestyle. The book also has a large and interesting section on Aboriginal culture and language. This is something many Australians living in the cities do not know much about. Other topics given a go are, food, wine, sports, and lots of other information about Australia and Aussies!
