5 out of 5 stars interesting read.......2007-02-05

I bought this for our honeymoon since we were visiting all the islands and this seems to cover everything. It was an entertaining read with good information.

2 out of 5 stars Taking this back to the library.......2006-08-08

I could barely read any of this book. The type is so tiny and hard to read, and the maps are all grey and difficult to read as well. Everything is just scrunched in there and you have to pore over that map to figure out what the heck you're looking at. They're way too busy. They cram too much detail into one map.

Its information is segmented well, and it's good that they list operating hours and prices where they can, but I just can't squint at that little type. The lettering on some of these maps is literally as small as the head of a pin. I'm supposed to be able to whip this out of my backpack on the island and use it as a quick reference tool? This book is going back to the library; I'll just have to find another book to use.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lonely Planet Guide.......2006-07-03

I can very much reccomend this book to everyone planning to go to Hawaii. It has a section about every Hawaian Island open to travellers. You find general background information about the islands as well as very detailed information about things to do and see, lodging, dining and activities. It also picks out places that are usually less crowed than the major tourist accumulations.
Lonely Planet Guide Books are an absolute MUST before I go on a trip.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaii - know more than the guides!.......2006-03-27

I bought this for my parents. My mother read it before she went on her trip and ended up becoming an unofficial guide on some of their trips. She also had long informative conversations with the actual guides because of the book.

Now, I'm not advocating the book as a substitute for a real history book, but it isn't bad!

Also, the tips were helpful and helped my parents prioritize and figure out where they wanted to go.

1 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Hawaii.......2006-02-13

Everyone thinks Lonely Planet has such great guidebooks. I used to feel that way, until we used one for the island of Hawaii.
The directions given placed us on private property. The owners were quite upset that we had come through the gate on to their property. As a frequent tourist I do not want to upset the locals. When rereading the directions, it is as if the writer were on purpose sending people on to the property to upset the owners. I don't know, maybe they had some confrontations that the writer wanted to get back at the property owner?? Not very professional.
I think Lonely Planet should be more careful about what they recieve and print from their writers. I won't buy another Lonely Planet guidebook. For Hawaii buy Hawaii Revealed, Oahu Revealed, Kauai Revealed or Maui Revealed. The best guidebooks ever for those islands.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Kauai guide book.......2007-06-09

I'm just back from my first (and not my last) trip to Kauai. I bought 7 Kauai travel guide books to plan my trip (yes, I was overly excited). Of the 7, this and one other were head and shoulders above the rest. I strongly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Almost completely useless.......2007-01-10

Please relate to my comments on the other guidebook about Queensland.
Kauai Guidebook was not as deceiving as that one, may be because being so thin, we didn't expect very much from it, and... come on!!! Hawaii anyway!!
We got an address for a place to stay, the rest was decided either thanks to comments from colleagues who had been there already, or from the REAL guidebook series for Hawaii, the blue series. A colleague loaned it to us. At the beginning, being so used to Lonely Planet we thought we will sticked with it. Truth is we, never used it there, only the blue book which offers detailed descriptions, interesting comments and very useful maps.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book! Take on your Maui trip!.......2007-04-09

This book and Maui Revealed are my favorite. The variety and detail of the maps and narative are very exellent. Lots of overall info about Maui in a well put together format. Nice compact size that will fit in your carry on. Get it!

3 out of 5 stars Good information but overall it's stale.......2006-01-07

My main gripe is with the updated changes. Comparing the old and new versions I see that a few pages were plugged in but nothing major was added. If you're thinking of buying this book save some money and buy it used.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and handy guide for travelers and tourists.......2005-11-08

Maui is the Lonely Planet travel guide to the Hawaiian island of Maui, known for its sea turtles, waterfalls, and hikes along the ancient Haleakala volcano. An island paradise filled with opportunities for windsurfing, snorkeling, diving, surfing, cycling, and just relaxing, Maui is a beautiful land; chapters in Lonely Planet's Maui include a brief summary of the island's history and culture, sample itineraries, a wealth of maps with off-track detours, recommended places to go divided by region upon the island, local hazards to avoid or prepare for, and much more. An excellent and handy guide for travelers and tourists.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great.......2005-05-18

Some useful details and guides, but overall it lacks the fine detail I was looking for. It seemed to gloss over some great places, and give unecessary information about some pretty bland things. It would be a decent addition to other books about Maui.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2004-02-13

The basics were were here but it didn't bite off what Lonely Planet usually is famous for. Pretty bland coverage for such a colourful place.

4 out of 5 stars A useful guide book.......2005-12-08

I found this book quite useful while hiking on the big island, where I did the majority of the recommended hikes (excluding the Mauna Kea, admittedly). I used it in the planning phase and, in conjunction with a topographic map, during the hikes. The descriptions of the hikes are accurate both in terms of the path to take, the scenery, plant and animal life to expect as well as in regard to the time the hikes will take. The warnings it contains, especially regarding the need to carry enough water are to be taken seriously! As a fit but not expert hiker, I ended up finishing the hikes in about the lower estimated duration given by lonely planet.

What made me, as a biologist, sad while hiking in Hawaii was the abundance of non-native (invading) species, which in many cases have a detrimental effect on the endemic Hawaiian species. There is not much in this book about this problem, which is quite striking to anyone interested in nature who hikes around the Hawaiian islands.

In addition to the sections about the hikes, I found the information on hostels and cheap dining places on the big island informative.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview if you're getting away from the beach.......2005-07-04

A note to any prospective purchasers: Lonely Planet released several books on Hawaii, both about the state in general and also about some of the individual islands. This book only covers state and national parks, and known hiking trails on the five islands you can get to (thus excluding Lana'i, and the inaccessible Kaho'olawe and Niihau. Therefore, it's best used in conjunction with the other general books on the subject.

I found this book to be of value for the three islands I visited. There's a little bit of outdated information about climbing the Diamond Head volcano crater on Oahu. More useful to me were the extend portions about Waimea Canyon State Park on Kauai (absolutely gorgeous even if you're only driving up, as my wife and I did) and the material about Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. This latter section was especially helpful in terms of providing background information, as we had a poor commercial tour guide who frequently missed the points we were interested in.

I recommend this book even for the non-hiker (we limited ourselves mostly to the "easy" trails) because the level of detail about the two state parks mentioned above, surpasses both what I found in other books and even from some tour guides.

3 out of 5 stars from a hiker.......2004-01-22

This book hits on just the tip of the iceburg. There are hundreds of trails on these islands and since I only visited two I wanted it to tell me more. So if you do buy it, use it for just an overview. It makes a good companion to the Frommers Hawaii book.

2 out of 5 stars Too General.......2003-11-20

I picked up this book because of Lonely Planet's good name. For general reading it's okay for an overview but for solid trail advice and exact information that a hiker really needs, it misses the mark. I only visited one island and there weren't enough listings to make purchasing this book worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Good review, but only one island..........2005-10-19

The book is great, has a lot of information about the Big Island, but that is it's shortcoming. Knowing that most trips to Hawaii are those to more than one island, the Lonely Planet book about the whole state would probably be more appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars The offbeat guide to the Big Island.......2005-08-06

I've been a frequent visitor to the Big Island and plan on moving there soon. The 'Lonely Planet Big Island' and 'Hawaii the Big Island Revealed' are your two must have guides to the Big Island.

5 out of 5 stars caution.......2004-06-25

whatever you do, don't substitute the Hawaii Revealed guide for this book. Lonely Planet Hawaii has everything in it. It contains no fluffy puff stuff or downer opinions. Our copy is worn from four weeks on the road and although pretty beat up, we deem it gospel. Traditionally the Lonely Planets are written by real travelers who are objective and write really well. They have no bones to pick. This is no exception.

    4 out of 5 stars handy.......2007-01-27

We used this book recently in oahu. My biggest complaint is that it was not helpful in choosing our Waikiki hotel as the descriptions are too vague. But there are helpful hints and they do tell you where to get the best mai tai. I am glad I brought it along but it is not good as an only guidebook.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2006-02-25

This little book was the best thing to have on our recent trip to Hawaii. I referred to it many times a day. The maps were very clear and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed the pages devoted to the history of the Islands. There was even a brief guide to understanding and speaking Hawaiian. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Oahu.

    5 out of 5 stars shines.......2005-11-01

This guide was very handy. On our first trip, a second honeymoon, just the ticket.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet mucho gusto.......2005-07-05

Lonely Planet Oahu took us far far away from the maddening crowds of Waikiki. We liked Honolulu but preferred staying in a B and B in Kailua where we could jump in the car and do the tourist thing without bumping into the traffic we saw heading in from the airport. Glenda Bendure is a upbeat traveler. The book features many little extras and tips that perk up the pages. Even if you don't spend or have time to see the whole island, it's worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Choice For Visiting Oahu.......2004-12-17

I generally like the Lonely Planet books, and the Oahu book is no exception. The book is relatively current and topical, and to its credit covers not only Honolulu and Waikiki, but also the rest of the island (some other books shortchange everything outside the city, I find.)

I like that the book provides off-the-beaten-path type information, but I do believe that the book is so compact that a lot of useful information has been left out, particularly in the categories of restaurants and lodging. The maps are, of course, fairly small (and black and white) so I recommend getting the excellent Lonely Planet map for island navigation, especially if you are driving.

I think that overall this is a good guidebook, but the organization is sometimes difficult to use. That combined with the relative brevity of restaurant and hotel information caused me to deduct a star from my rating. Overall it is a good guide, and I certainly recommend it, although I have to give the more up to date "Oahu Revealed" guide by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman the edge for user friendliness and completeness of commonly useful information.

2 out of 5 stars Little value to divers or snorkelers.......2003-05-15

I'm very dissapointed in this book. I'm an experienced West Coast diver who has dove in Hawaii several times. I bought the book hoping to find detailed information on some great sites. What I got instead was a general overview without any real substance. Yes, there are some good facts throughout the text that are helpful, weather, climate conditions, etc., but very little on where and how to dive the individual sites. The sites for each island listed are only a few, and in my experience aren't the best ones. Specific details are left up to the diver or snorkeler to figure out. Something difficult for a first timer to the islands. The maps were too few, too basic, too broad, and lacked sufficient detail to really have this book be considered a "guide book." I would suggest anyone travelling over to Hawaii to pick up a copy of "The O`ahu Snorkelers and Shore Divers Guide" by Francisco B. de Carvalho. His book has more detailed info than any other book on the market and will definitely give you what you need to know on selecting and diving or snorkeling a site...all 26 for just the island of O`ahu.

5 out of 5 stars Snorkeling like the locals.......2001-11-11

I am usually not a Lonely Planet guide fan - I like more pictures. So this book was a pleasant surprise from them. Lots of vivid pictures. Fantastic advice about what types of things NOT to touch too!! Kept us out of trouble more than once. They listed several of the sites that the local dive shops mentioned as well. You have to know they are good that way! Nice to have a guide for which are shore access and which require a boat trip too. We went to every single shoreline access site listed for the Big Island and they were correct with their descriptions. Our trip wouldn't have been half as wonderful without this book! Thank you Astrid and Casey!

5 out of 5 stars Hawaii dive guide.......2001-07-04

I used this book a lot on my recent trip to Maui and thought it was great. It's not like the general Lonely Planet guidebooks, but it's not trying to be - it's got lots more photos (awesome!) and and the focus really is on the dive site descriptions. There's plenty of snorkeling information, including a "Top 10 snorkeling sites". And did I mention the photos?

1 out of 5 stars This is not a "real" Lonely Planet Guide..........2000-03-21

I have used many Lonely Planet Guides to travel from Asia to Middle East to Africa, and they have all been great plan-it/do-it-yourself guides. This one isn't one of them. It gives no real info at all on the actual location of a site, except to show a little icon on a small scale map. It says little about shore entry, and little about where to go after entering the water. It barely says anything useful for snorkeling. It's no more useful than a coffee table book when it comes to helping one plan a trip. It's a nice visual production, but it's a guidbook series acquired by Lonely Planet and not a "real" LP Guide.

4 out of 5 stars Great For Quick Reference.......2004-11-23

I am a fan of the Lonely Planet line, and this map is no exception. For what it is, it is excellent. The map is a laminated, accordion-fold map of the portions of Oahu and Honolulu that most people want to visit. It is a great size and format, but would be even better if it was just a bit shorter to make it better able to fit in pockets. The only reasons that I gave it four instead of five stars is that not all Honolulu is depicted, making it less than totally useful for exploring out of the way places (although it does cover Waikiki and downtown Honolulu well, redeeming it largely), and the scale is generally so small as to be difficult to read, especially while driving, the exceptions being the downtown Honolulu and the Waikiki maps, which are altogether excellent and very user-friendly.

I do recommend this map to people visiting Hawaii. It will be perfectly adequate for 99 percent of all tourists, but if you plan on venturing beyond downtown Honolulu or Waikiki, you need to consider a more comprehensive map. The single most useful map for most travelers to Oahu is the Nelles Maps edition titled "Honolulu and O'ahu," which I recommend highly. The only drawback to the Nelles map is that it is a full-size fold-out map, making it a bit unwieldy at times; therein lies the reason that I use both the Lonely Planet and Nelles maps, this map is best for on the go, quick reference use, while the Nelles map is best for trip and route-specific planning.
