Deutschland Ueber Alles.......2007-05-02

Ok, first off it annoys me to no end that Duisburg is not found in this book at all but 5 cities of equal size with both historical and economic importance are found. Whats more is that there are no real mentionings of how to get around on foot, by bicycle or scooter. Other than that this book is sadly the best one I could find when comparing about 10 or so German Travel Guides at my local bookstores. I plan on writing my own travel tips, guides and more and then submitting them to Lonely Planet.

Badly outdated.......2006-08-08

Normally, I am a faithful LP travel guide user, the books have always been helpul for trips I have taken in the past. On a 3 week trip through Germany in May-June 2006, I used the Germany LP and was unpleasantly suprised time after time at the outdated or just plain incorrect information in the book. Not little things like prices, which always go up, but major problems like listings for buses to the airport in Berlin, that I discovered after much searching, had been discontinued two years ago. This type of thing happened repeatedly. At the end of the trip I actually felt cheated and as if I had wasted my money, and worse, valuable time depending on information provided in this purchase. The only thing it ended up being good for was finding hotel listigs to make reservations with during the planning stages. I don't have another guide to suggest instead, but leaving basic transportation info outdated for so long is just negligent. I'm going to to try Rough Guide next time.

Makes the travel easier.......2006-06-11

For my one-week-only trip (I circulated around Frankfurt and Wiesbaden) the book did it's job. The maps are great; the articles refresh your memory and help you look knowledgeable enough when talking to locals. Overall I think it makes the visit through this very hospitable country easier and even more entertaining.

Extremely Helpful!.......2005-10-06

The best thing about Lonely Planet guide books is it gives you tons of useful information from customs and culture to language to the nitty-gritty how to, where to go, and what to see and do. We just returned from a one week trip to Germany. It was wonderful, and we took the Lonely Planet guidebook with us everywhere. It led us to many great cities, sights, restaurants, and places to stay. Highly recommended! We have also used Lonely Planet guidebooks on our trips to Thailand and Japan. It has never led us very far astray. :)

A good guide.......2004-10-01

I just got back from a month long backpacking all over Germany. Its truely is a great guide for independent lonely traveller. I do agree with other reviewer's comment that, its geared towards people using public transport more, but that worked out well for me. I don't know what reviewers are complaining about the East Germany part, but I had great time with the help of this book in the east (spent 1.5 weeks).
The only problem is that this guide book is updated only once in 2yrs or so, so some of the info is outdated (the Dachau tour info) and I had to miss out on some tours because of that. I haven't used other guides and this is my first lonely travel so I can't really compare, but this is a very comprehensive travel companion (when you have no companion at all :).

Berlin travel guides.......2003-04-03

This book has all the information you need, to prepare you for a wonderful vacation in Berlin. It's the kind of book that you curl up with near the fire on a cold snowy winter day and read about the trip you'll take during the summer. But--------- there are better guides for those individuals who have travelled in Europe before and who just want the nuts and bolts and will allow the city to visit them. I personally recommend either DK (Dorling Kindersley) Eyewitness Guide to Berlin or the slightly older Knopf 'City Guide' published last in 1998. However with Berlin changing so rapidly, you'll probably do better with the DK guide. It has more photos which aren't essential, but are a nice added feature but more importantly it breaks the city up in a better way to help you get the most out of your time. I think it's much better.

I really like the set up of Lonely Planets Best Of travel guides. Couldn't find one for this area so tried this book. All the info is in this guide, but is difficult and time consuming to find.

Not helpful.......2007-04-21

I bought this book figuring that Lonely Planet would have a relatively savvy and useful language phrasebook. However, this is a fairly poor guide to speaking basic German - I took it with me on my first trip to Germany and found this book to be confusingly organized when I wanted to find correct phrases in a hurry. In fact, there were one or two instances where I believe it taught me incorrect contextual usage. Look elsewhere.

Limited use if you speak basic German.......2005-07-16

The lonely planet German phrase book is well designed for a pocket sized two-way dictionary, but in my past three trips to Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, I only pulled out the book on a few occasions. In fact, I've made more use of the dictionary while in international chat-rooms and trying to type basic German phrases.

The book is divided into some nice subject areas: practical (which includes travel and shopping phrases), social, food, and safe travel (which is more of an emergency section). I've made the most use of the food and social sections. I think most people traveling to German speaking countries will want to invest in a German language CD and learn your basic travel and shopping phrases from an audio program. German is pretty easy to learn for a native English speaker. However, having an extensive food dictionary on hand is a good idea when you are trying to order something other than "bier" or "bratwurst". (Of course, you should still treat yourself to German beer and bratwurst -- it is amazing!)

However, I still found the book to be of limited use, for two reasons: (1) despite the color coded subject areas, when I've really needed vocabulary fast, hunting through the book is still awkward, and (2) many German speakers can understand some amount of English. While I do like this book, I've found that I've not really needed it (I had two years of German as a kid). I carried my book in my small book bag, but never in my pocket. However, if you do not speak basic German, I'd recommend buying a copy of this book.

Best travel book for Bavaria.......2003-06-13

I just got back from a trip with my mother and sister. We went to Munich, Fuessen, Wuerzburg, Rothenburg, and Triberg. We had 4-5 different travel books with us, and this one certainly won as the most comprehensive and easy-to-read.

Useful information and well organized.......2007-06-26

Lonely Planet books are always fairly well organized and this edition of Hungary is no exception. The information is current and doesn't neglect any corner of this very interesting and beautiful country. The book contains information to satisfy a wide range of interests; everything from those interested in winery tours to those looking for a relaxing beach vacation at Europe's largest lake, Lake Balaton. Likewise, the book nicely balances the needs of those who travel by rail, bus or by their own rented car, as we did. One small complaint, not the author's fault, is Lonely Planet's editorial decision to omit good photos, other than the few esoteric token photos near the center of the book. I suppose there is an editorial struggle between pretty pictures versus content, but it can be frustrating if tackling a country such as Hungary where you have no apriori knowledge of the various landscapes in different regions of the country. A picture is in fact worth a thousand words, but Lonely Planet simply does not see it that way. Perhaps pick up the DK guide for photos to inspire and guide your trip planning for Hungary.

Excellent book with up-to-date and accurate informations.......2007-06-07

I have visited Budapest and more than five towns around it last summer, and have used this book extensively as my only guide to the country.
It was of great help, in it you can find everything you will need to get the full experience of the country, including historical informations, sites to visit, maps, well choosed recommendations of restaurants and bars, informations about accommodation, transport and people.
I can recommend this book to everyone who wants to visit and learn about Hungary.

Accomodation info already out of date.......2005-09-07

Although this edition was only published 2 years ago, the accomodation sections in various towns is already quite out of date . I suppose the accomodation situation changes quite rapidly in Hungary, even the 2005 edition of LP Eastern Europe has much more up to date accomodation info for Hungary, altough as a whole it has less info on Hungary of course.

Great Resource on Hungary.......2004-11-11

I lived in Hungary for a while, and this is a great resource for traveling around the country. The author captures the Hungarian spirit and quirkiness quite well, and the reviews of the restaurants, hotels, and attractions are usually accurate.

I do caution people that the information isn't as accurate if you're traveling to any of the minor cities. I lived in Szombathely, and many of the hotels and restaurants don't exist any more, and the attractions are rather... er, not quite as they are portrayed.

Also be aware that the train schedules change every January, so even if the guide says a certain leaves from Keleti or Deli, this may not be the case. Verify everything before you can make travel arrangements.

Concise (Cultural/Historical/Educational) Complete Guide.......2003-12-27

While the internet is virtually an (almost) unlimted source for information about any country, it is also an overload of too much information ... that is when you need a guide to help you sort it all out. Lonely Planet does *just* *this* for anyone who is interested in visiting and touring Hungary. I have been to Hungary three times in the past five years and was delighted to discover this wonderful book. While my primary purpose was to visit relatives, the opportunity to visit historical sites and experience the culture is always foremost in my mind. Since most vacations are limited to 2, 3 or 4 weeks - you need to know where to find what interests you and make the most of your European vacation. This is the primary purpose of this book.

Lonely Planet tells you about restaurants, hotels (and their prices), entertainment, folklore events, art galleries, museums, castles, and churches, too -- giving a very good description of *nearly* everything of historical or cultural interest in the major cities and towns of Hungary. There are some very nice photographs,too. I was most impressed by their including information about transportation, buses, the metro and the trains. You are given an indespensible synopsis and outline of "what you need to know" of how to get "where you want to go." Budapest is described in vivid detail - the charm of this old world capital is evident - anyone unfamiliar with its treasures is enticied to visit. I have visited, Szekesfehervar, Veszprem, Sarvar, Szombathely, Gyor, Sumeg, Koszeg, Csesznek, Zirc, Mor, and at Lake Balaton: Siofok, Keszthely, Tihany & Badacsony -- all described beautifully for what they offer the tourist. Of note, there are highlighted boxes which give special information, hard to find elsewhere, for instance, "Herend Porcelain" is featured, giving a brief history of this art and a description of some patterns. "The Victoria pattern of butterflies and wild flwoers of the Bakony was designed for Queen Victora after she admired a display of Herend pieces at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851." (page 228)

Good succinct information, enjoyable read.......2002-06-21

I bought this book during an extended stay in Frankfurt, to get to know the city. I was so happy with my purchase because it didn't weigh itself down with wordy descriptions of hotels, etc. Instead, this is a very practical, carry-with-you book that gives great ideas for food, shopping, entertainment and activities. The best part about it was that I felt that it gave you the highlights of the city up front, then showed what other things you'd like once you covered the not-to-be-missed stuff. A great section also is Quirky Frankfurt. You get a great idea of the special things about the city throughout the book.

Very Good.......2001-05-31

Of several Munich guides I own this is the best one I've bought to date. It's witty, and gives a great overview of attractions, hotels and restaurants alongside the usual wealth of practical information. The maps could be organized better but still are far superior to that of the Rough Guide, Fodor's or Frommer's. As a newcomer to New York I know what it's like to be parachuted into a big city, and Lonely Planet's book made Munich easily accessible, and fun.

Accurate, But Overly Cynical & Poorly Organized.......2001-01-04

The first thing I noticed about this book was the difficulty in finding information quickly and efficiently. This is especially important if you're standing on a street corner in Munich in a driving snowstorm trying to find the glockenspiel.

Maps are generally good, but could be slightly more detailed.

Information is technically accurate especially in regards to opening times, entrance fees, getting around, walking tours, etc.

I was put off by the author's attitude. His remarks are often flippant and filled with unnecessary cynicism in a forced attempt to be hip. I often had the impression while using this book that he really disliked Munich.

I was particularly surprised at his extreme criticism of service, particularly at restaurants, and can only attribute this to cultural differences. Waiters in Germany, as in most of Europe, are trained to leave you alone and respond when called. As most Americans expect to be given attention every few minutes, this can take some getting used to. (It should be noted that I am an American living in Germany.)
