Worst LP book I've ever bought, but some utility.......2007-05-28

I've been using Lonely Planet guide books for over 15 years, for all parts of the world---Africa, Europe, SE Asia, N America--and this is definitely the worst I've seen. I paid full price and wish I had read it (or the other reviews here) first.

A quick symbol of what's wrong with this book: The back cover, in an obvious effort to appeal to the Irish-American market, touts the book's usefulness for those wanting to "Get Back to Your Roots: hints and tips on researching the family tree." Not really my thing, but okay. Problem is, the entirety of information on genealogy consists of a tiny text box on p.682 that basically tells you to go buy some other books. Thanks! This same pattern is repeated throughout the book: endless efforts to appeal to a series of niche audiences (especially those w/ the $ to shell-out for the thing) with absolutely nothing treated in depth.

More serious problems:
--very thin information about transportation, particularly in less-traveled areas. thin info on ferries, driving, trains

--maps mediocre

--almost nothing discussing regional cultures, local histories, etc. Just a thin overview in the front

--coverage is best for those regions likely to be overrun by US tourists; other areas practically ignored

--the bias in accommodations is towards the high- and low-ends with the kinds of places most travelers would be interested in and able to stay at ignored (as with genealogical info, the list of websites giving accommodation info is far more useful than anything in the book itself)

--the border is pretty much a non-entity these days, but the differences between the two countries aren't discussed at all, or practicalities like driving a rental car across the border

(A minor point: is LP putting the orientation information (directories, getting to/from, health, etc) in the back of all its books, or just this one? The front seems a much more useful/obvious place to look for that kind of thing.)

In the end, the book isn't terrible--it just isn't very good. And that's hard to justify in an era when much of the information it contains can be had for free online.

Ugh.......2007-03-06

Sorry folks, I thought this book was wreched. I have been to Europe several times before, and usually enjoy the Lonely Planet series- I can credit 2 great vacations to their recommendations. Sorely disappointed in this edition. Terrible information regarding public transportation (which was significantly less available than in other major european cities- and which I would have liked to know)- there was no mention of the fact that in order to get the student fares on the train system, you have to come in to the country with a 'student identification card' that you have to apply for weeks ahead of time. Visiting Ireland is nearly worthless if you don't rent a car, I found out by the end of the trip from my own experience. Sorry Lonely Planet, this time, my trip was more costly than anticipated, significantly less exciting, and I came back feeling "eehhh" about the whole country.

Good Guidebook.......2007-01-04

I went to Ireland in November, and this guide was all I really needed. In smaller towns like Westport or Galway, this guide never led me astray. In Dublin, however, I had some major disagreements with the assessments and ratings of some of the restaurants and pubs. If you're going to be in Dublin for more than a few days, there are probably better Dublin-specific guide books, but all in all, this is a very good overall book for traveling the Emerald Isle.

Outstanding! Just returned from our trip to Ireland, and found everything to be wonderful. For the areas we visited (Dublin and County Waterford), we went everywhere that was recommended, and were not disappointed. Loved the organization and presentation.

Best of the Best.......2006-03-26

Lonely Planet's "Ireland" is the most thorough travel guidebook I've found. It covers more subjects and lists more places than any other single guidebook. The descriptions are current, interesting and relevant. The maps are very useful and specific directions are given to get to the various sights listed. Also the Irish as well as the English form of place names is given - helpful when trying to interpret road signs. Various forms of transportation available in each place is also a bonus. This guidebook lists more lodging and eating options than any other. Whether you are into wind surfing or shopping, hiking or bar hopping, this book has a wealth of information for you. If you are only going to get one guidebook for your trip - this is the one to get.

The Only Book You'll Need.......2007-06-18

As the other reviewers have said, this is a great guidebook. I used it to plan a three-day visit recently. The hotel I chose was exactly as described, and a good choice. Unlike some guidebooks, it has great maps. There are six detailed colored maps in the back of the book, a map of the Dublin Area Regional Transit trains, and numerous smaller maps inside (e.g., maps of walking tours, of Trinity College, of cathedrals). The book is chock-full of interesting and useful info on all the sights of Dublin. In addition, if you want to do day trips out of Dublin, don't assume you need a different all-Ireland guide - there is a section on "excursions" you can do in a day, and instructions on how to get there (public transport, car, organized tour). I will say that one of the tours I took wasn't quite how it was described, but I should probably take that up with the tour company. A few tips: a) for a breathtaking coastal walk, go to Howth. Malahide, another coastal town, wasn't worth the time for me. b) Glendalough is a beautiful park with two big lakes, and to me was worth more time than the organized tour I chose allotted for it.

My wife and I just got back from Ireland and had a great time, in part because of this book. The guesthouse we stayed in, several of the restaurants we visited, and more than a couple of the sites we saw were drawn from its pages. I'm happy to report that its guidance was uniformly spot on. We tend to enjoy simply being in a place, doing things in a low key way and deciding what to do next as we take our time wandering around. This guide was perfect for that, easy to whip out of a bag over lunch or on a street corner, though I suspect that it would be useful for those who prefer to set down itineraries, too.

For what it's worth, this has been our experience with other Lonely Planet guides as well (including those for Ireland and Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks).

Handy, convenient and helpful.......2004-07-05

I bought this guide and the Rick Steves book to plan my trip to Dublin. Both were very helpful, but I left Rick's book at home because Lonely Planet has GLBT info in it and has better maps. I used the maps a lot, both to find my way and also to get back on track when I got lost. A lot of the prices for things quoted in the book had gone up, but that's to be expected. I highly recommend both Dublin and this guidebook.

Dracula Fans!.......2003-10-22

This sweet, compact guide measures only 7" x 3", but packs a wallop in the info department! Went to Dublin last year, and out of 8 city guides I looked at, this was the ONLY one who had info on Bram Stoker (Dracula's author); his house in an historic landmark, and the author also leads you to his beautiful birth residence!

Out of Date.......2005-07-11

I found this book to be very out of date, especially in terms of walking paths, pricing and logistics. I went to Dingle, and found that the hostel they highly recommend as having a free shuttle no longer has a free shuttle or friendly/knowledgeable service. I went on the three day Dingle walk that they outline, and the path had changed (and been changed for several years) and we got quite lost several times by following the directions in the books. The hostels that they indicate offer food no longer exist or don't offer food, and they don't mention anything about how easy it is to find someone to shuttle your baggage from walk to walk. Very disappointed.

Compact encyclopaedia for independent walkers.......2002-04-02

For independent walkers planning a trip to Ireland, this portable encyclopaedia is good value. It covers a huge range, from a scenic two-hour stroll to the 122-mile Kerry Way (nine days), from easy walks to some tough mountain circuits. As you would expect from Lonely Planet, the authors are strong on environmental issues and thorough on practical information.

In 424 well-filled pages they cover the whole island of Ireland, both the Republic and Ulster (part of the UK). The secret of easy access is to use their handy 4-page table of walks organised by region. There is a good index and glossary, and even the boxed text and maps are indexed. Each walk is supported by a small-scale contour map (intended for planning purpose only). As a one-stop resource for walking in Ireland, this book is unrivalled.

Walking in Ireland.......2000-05-18

The Lonely Planet guides are always an honest,open an informative and this is no different. The book gives you detailed information on walks giving you directions such as "100m to the left of the pier" and so on. I find with details like that it's pretty hard to get lost! There is also general information on travelling in Ireland, places to stay, where to eat, what's worth seeing and places to avoid if you want to be in a less visited area. The only thing I would like to see is a little more information on day walks. Many people want day walks around Killarny and Dingle and from the information in the book I'm not sure how to divide up some of the week long walks in to day hikes for people who don't have a week for walking

This book gave a great overview and some routes through Ireland via bicycle. As I still have not totally planned my trip, I cannot tell how the recommendations are, but Lonely Planet guides are usually been excellent, in my experience. I wish it had more information on choosing between a guided and a DIY tour, as I am now trying to decide whether to do all the work in carrying luggage, making reservations and finding bikes B&Bs myself, or spending a little extra. It has good information about bicycles and the gear to bring along as well.

Dissapoint for this book.......2007-05-23

I read the recommendation from Amazon, who recommend reader to buy "Lonely planet island" and "Lonely Planet Greece" together.
However, I found the book of " Greece" is enough!! Because you can find enough information of islands in the book of "Greece", you needn't to buy the book of "Greek Island" again! I am not happy for the recommendation from Amazon, which is difficult for me to trust it again!

Excellent guide to the Greek islands!.......2005-09-03

Like its companion book (Lonely Planet Greece), this is an excellent guide (but just to the islands)! It is concise, reads very easily, and gives good common-sense recommendations on what to see and where to stay. It is as up-to-date as you can reasonably expect with changing prices and euro/dollar fluctuations. A very, very practical guide from the budget tourist to middle class. Excellent pictures, very good maps, a fine job! It reminds me, in a way, of the Michelin guides to Europe. Having said that, Lonely Planet Greece gives you basically the same information on the islands, plus mainland Greece, for just a few dollars more. So unless you are flying into Athens and going only to the islands, you are probably better off with the parent book.

Disappointing for a Lonely Planet book!.......2005-07-19

I own a LOT of Lonely Planet travel guides and have always been happy with the insider information they provide. This book, however, is lacking in MANY ways. First of all, there are hardly any photos. Secondly, it seems like the same island description has been pasted onto each island. It goes something like this, " This is one of the most beautiful islands....". Lastly, it falls way short in hotel listing. In Mykonos, for example, the book only list 3 hotels in budget, 3 in medium price range, and 3 deluxe hotels. You've got to be kidding! All that's listed as far as excursions in Mykonos is the number of a travel agent and a gay cruise. Sorry,..not interested...in either!! I want descriptions and suggestions. Did Lonely Planet really ever visit all of these islands? VERY disappointing!

Use Let's Go Greece.......2005-06-17

I used this book for Crete and Santorini and it just didn't get the job done. Fortunately, I had Let's Go Greece 2005 with me as well. It had much more accurate and useful information, at least for the the two aformentioned islands.

LP Greek Islands is useful for keeping your Athens cafe table from wobbling, though. So, it has that going for it.

Useful book but not great.......2005-02-15

I really felt like this book should get just three stars, but compared to most other travel guides about the Greek Islands it is definitely one of the best ones. However, I was disappointed that it lacks the kind of detail and good street maps that many other Lonely Planet guides offer. There must be something about the Lonely Planet guides for Greece because the one for Crete is really substandard. And since this book contains the same kind of information about Crete but in a condensed format, it means you really get short-changed on that island. Like I said, this is definitely one of the better guides about the Greek Islands, but I have to say I think the Eyewitness Travel Guide for the Greek Islands edges it out slightly. I should point out that I do not typically use travel books to find hotels and restaurants because those subjects always leave out tons of other options and are often outdated. I find the web more useful instead. This book does include a lot of that information, which I essentially ignored. If you like that kind of information in a book then you might prefer this one over the Eyewitness Travel Guide.

Not only is this book witty, it covers all the city sights and is very useful. This book is written by a different author from the first edition and the change is phenomenal. This book is definitely recommended - the colourful festivals section is totally cool.

Unfortunately, this books lacks the quality of other LP's........1999-10-13

This guide to Edinburgh unfortunately lacks the quality we're used from Lonely Planet. I couldn't taste any commitment of the author to the subject, it almost looks like that the author wrote the guide during an afternoon visit. Surprisingly, many very interesting features of Edinburgh are not included, like the Botanical Gardens. Many other features are decribed too briefly. When looking for a guide of the town, step into a local bookstore en look for the locally issued handbook of Edinburgh, published bij Mercat Press. It's good souvenir too.

A Very Informative Book.......2002-06-24

This is a really great book. It covers not only the subject of Irish food, but also gives information on the culture and a brief history of Ireland. The book is packed with information, maps and beautiful photographs. It is a really helpful book for anyone interested in Ireland.

A Gem.......2000-10-09

Very entertaining and informative, this little book was a pleasure to read. Written by Irish folks, it offers witty commentary on the social and cultural traditions of Ireland as well as discussing the wholesome and delicious cuisine. If you've got any interest in Ireland at all, you're sure to enjoy this wonderful guide.

Bought the book and found the maps with cite notations most helpful upon our visits--although there were many one ways that make getting from 1 place to another difficult at times, but you can't blame the book for that. Ate and stayed at some of their suggestions and we weren't disappointed.
Book heavily geared to the younger/hostel type of traveler--we were neither, but it still provided us with a lot of helpful suggestions.

I have used lonely planet travel books on my many trips to South and Central America, and I have always been happy with their information and insight. This book on Scotland continues to support my happiness with this series of travel books.

Very good travel guide.......2000-04-20

I found the Lonely Planet guide to be an excellent resource, especially when used with the Baedeker Scotland guide. LP offers truly helpful information, such as where to find maps, how to get back your VAT, weather and insect warnings... as well as brief but very descriptive chapters by region, including the oft-neglected Highlands.

Suggested itineraries are included, and the descriptions of sights, towns and historical destinations is wonderful.

While the guide is short on maps and history -- this is where the Baedeker guide does an excellent job -- it is full of useful and up-to-date information on travelling Scotland. I found my copy to be incredibly resourceful.

Nice book, but a bit thin.......1999-07-06

Lonely planet books are usually a good companion both if you're clueless or experienced. In this case however, the book is a lot thinner than the Rough Guide for Scotland and offers less information. The LP looks better, but who cares about the looks of a travel book.
