From Jazziz
Our next cut, "Always a Friend," is from alto and soprano saxophonist Bobby Watson. Watson, who came into public view with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1977-81, has continued to grow as a composer and soloist in the years since, working with likes of Max Roach, Sam Rivers, and his own 29th St. Saxophone Quartet. Currently, Watson mainly leads small ensembles like the one assembled here - trumpeter Terell Stafford, pianist Orrin Evans, guitarists Greg Skaff and Lenny Argese, bassist Curtis Lundy, drummer Ralph Peterson, percussionist Marlon Simon, and vocalist Pamela Watson. Watson calls his new CD, Quiet As It's Kept, "mellow, meditative, soft, and relaxed. I think it's my most mature statement yet, certainly the most sophisticated, conceptually speaking."
