About the Artist
The idea of what constitutes an orchestra has evolved in the late part of this century. Groups like the Young Composers Collective of Seattle and Austrian ensemble Die Knodel make use of instruments and genres that reflect the wide ranging musical tastes of their players. The Vagabond Orchestra is a Seattle based ensemble who compose and perform original music for dance, film and concert. The musicians in the ensemble bring a multitude of musical experiences to enhance the groups sound including jazz, folk, rock, electronic, polka, theatrical traditions, and world music as well as the classical symphony orchestra.

The groups composer, D. Ashley Baker, has an affinity for crafting eclectic songs with influences that literally span the globe. He is the groups guitarist as well and surrounds himself with a lush mix of sounds including accordion, sax, flute, cello, vocals, bass, drums and strings. The songs on their latest CD, The Soundtrack, reflect Bakers personal life episodes as well as conjure up cinematic images from the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

The ensemble most recently performed at an opening night gala for the Portland Art Museums Claude Monet exhibit as well as a Pierce County Art Council Festival. In the fall of 1997, the group performed with the Vanessa Gibber Dance Company at Bumbershoot and at Equinox Gallery for a mixed media event which involved collaboration with artist Drake Deknatel and the Shane Szabo Dance Troupe.
