This 1996 session has come and gone in stores, a victim of the on-again, off-again interest Columbia Records had in the Japanese DIW label. It's out of Columbia's hands entirely with this issue, and the music speaks as frankly as it always did. David Murray's quartet, with pianist Anthony Davis, bassist Kenny Davis, and drummer Tommy Campbell, gets a rambunctious, creative expansion with trombonist Ray Anderson on board. They play a mere six tunes, the first a slurry "Stompin' at the Savoy" and the rest from Anderson and both Davises. The matchup between Murray and Anderson is inspired, both of them so emphatic that at times the jubilation is overwhelming. Each plays torrents where others play solos, Anderson blowing so roundly that everything seems in overflow mode. Murray, too, plays through the ceiling and walls. His octave leaps and whistling, high-end mastery are captivating. This is a casual date, and it shows the pure energy of kindred spirits launching off. --Andrew Bartlett
