Product Description
All compositions and arrangements on this CD were by Jim Schapperoew. Since some of his drumming techniques had taken, in certain cases, years to develope, these recordings began in 1979 and were finalized in 1997. While he has an extensive, decades long backround in jazz, these pieces utilize a more personalized and diverse rhythmic conception throughout. For example, 2 pieces are completely a- -rhythmic, while 3 others employ two meters (7/4 and 3/4) simultaneously. The end result provides a thoroughly fresh and enjoyable listening experience. But, as a reviewer at Downbeat Magazine stated, This is some pretty unusual stuff...... He was, no doubt, in part refering not only to the unusual lyricism and provocative harmonies of the writing, but to Schapperoew's choice of instrumentation: 1st piece-c concert and bass marimbas, piano, and drums only. 2nd piece- drums, female voices, and flutes only. 3rd piece- male and female voices and c concert marimba only. 4th piece- drums only. 5th piece- cellos and violins only. 6th (and final) piece- drums and piano only. Three pieces employ improvisation and three do not. His drumming possesses a studied and highly developed technique that's truly virtuosic. In any case, what the listener will come away with is the conclusion that Schapperoew is an accomplished and consummate insrumentalist/composer with a striking uniqueness and individuality to his musical voice. The side men and women that appear are classical musicians that give stunning performances throughout. The great pianist Charles Farrell also has an extensive backround in jazz, but his breathtaking improvisations on 2 pieces clearly indicate that he's gone far beyond those roots. This stunning CD is one of a kind. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
