Somewhere between trippy electronica and free jazz, the Chicago Underground Duo veers from blippy squiggles to racing percussion and brass with fleet dexterity. Perhaps it's because cornetist Rob Mazurek and percussionist Chad Taylor fluidly share gigs with the likes of Tortoise and other Chicago post-punkers. Synesthesia has Mazurek and Taylor monstering into the beat from the shoulders of vibraphone and electronics-built soundscapes, alternately sounding like a chillin' dance club band and a blazing post-bop ensemble. The amazing thing is, a mere pair of players creates such blue-bop, acoustic free play one minute and then puts together a sonic puzzle of motion, synthesis, and energy the next--with the help of artfully handled electro-textures. Consider this a much-needed document catching the blur between Chicago's always advanced jazz fringes and their likewise heady post-rock community. --Andrew Bartlett
