About the Artist
Jazz pianist Pamela Hines has been steadily building a national reputation as an artist with immense and complex originality. Hines has recorded with many top names including this latest duo venture with bassist Brian Torff. The album,"2 squared minus 2" was a featured topic when Hines was interviewed by jazz legend Marian McPartland on "Piano Jazz." The National Public Radio program aired in January and has brought Hines greater exposure and positive feedback. Hines, and Torff, who has toured and recorded with such jazz greats as Mel Torme and George Shearing, together create a wonderful musical experience on their first duo collaboration. Both include originals on this recording.
Hines first album,"9-45", received public and critical support when released in May, 1998. Trumpeter Darren Barrett, who is currently enjoying a jazz hot streak of his own, was featured on her debut, along with eclectic drummer Bob Moses.
Hines received her Masters in Music from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She studied with jazz greats Paul Bley, George Russell and Danilo Perez. It's clear they had an influence on her playing, primarily in the area of immense originality within the structure of traditional jazz form. This artist has the green light for greater creative ventures in the future.
Brian Q. Torff is a renowned bassist and composer, and is currently Music Program Director at Fairfield University. He is a featured bass soloist, and currently appears with his band, Thunderstruck, Naim and other groups at festivals and clubs across the United states.
His professional career began in 1974 when bassist Milt hinton offered him the chance to tour with Cleo Laine. He has recorded with pianists Marian McPartland and Mary Lou Williams, as well as the legendary violin virtuoso, the late Stephane Grappelli. Torff was the last bass player to work for Erroll Garner.
In 1979, Torff began a three year musical relationship with Goerge Shearing, working as a duo throughout the world in a 3 1/2 year period. Their third album, with vocalist Mel Torme, won them a Grammy and a trip to the White House in 1982 to perform their music. He has been featured in articles in the New York Times, Jazztimes and Downbeat Magazine.
