Perhaps one of the most overlooked jazz players of the '60s, Grant Green is best known as Blue Note's house guitarist and auteur of a style that was soulfully heartfelt yet coolly restrained and simple. While Green may not have received the props he deserved during his lifetime, the rehabilitation of his reputation among players and fans is just now starting to place Green in the proper context. This set, organized by his son, the guitarist Greg Green, should appeal to fans old and new for its focus on Green's signature sound: the laconic swing and vamp of a guitar and organ trading riffs and slip-sliding into grooves that move from graceful to funky in the splash of a high-hat. Tribute features Idris Muhammad, a drummer who frequently worked with Green, and Larry Goldings on the Hammond organ. Featured guitarists include Peter Bernstein, Ed Cherry, Russell Malone, Dave Stryker, and Mark Whitfield. A fitting, hi-caliber tribute. --S. Duda
