Editorial Reviews
album liner notes by John Kruth
Beware! This is a protest album - well, at least not in the traditional sense, thank God. For the next fifty minutes you won't be subjected to some self-appointed big mouth political science major haranguing you with trendy Bolshevik opinions supported by raucous, "urgent" 3-chord guitar bashing. Quite the opposite actually. "Bright Lights, Big Insects" is more like a pristine prayer for peace, that swings. Gentle and groovin'. In this era of omnipresent ugly noise, (screaming cicada car alarms and mechanized beats that bludgeon the soul) Lords Julin and Wolff have carefully crafted a beautiful slice of auditory cheesecake. And as Professor Ornette Coleman once proclaimed to the few who made the grade at the night school of enlightenment - "Beauty Is (indeed) A Rare Thing". On the other hand, Messieurs Julin, Wolff and Co. kinda remind me of a bunch of Parisian exiles with a broken compass, trudging through the knee-high Midwestern snowdrifts, living on rations of sturgeon, fudge and cherries, in search of Django's Holy Grail. And I believe they'll find it by the time the tulips bloom next spring in Holland (Michigan, of course). 'Til then, relax and dig this quirky, romantic soundtrack to the movie called life. These are melodies for moments the Buddha called "the in-betweens". Accordions, mandolins and cellos sing soft and low while James Thurber walks his dog on a blustery autumn afternoon. Buster Keaton plucks a nose hair. Leonard Bernstein absentmindedly fries an egg in his bathrobe. Put it on while you polish your loafers or fumble with your lover's buttons. And turn it up, loud enough for the neighbors to hear. They deserve a break.
Really, John Kruth
