JIM MEROD - November 9, 1999
ROMANCE SERENADE celebrates Dale Fielder's maturity as a composer. His devotional suite, "Ocean of Love and Mercy" (Cadence), revealed an ability to compose a complex and compelling extended song structure. ROMANCE SERENADE furthers Fielder's achievement with standard lyric forms. Four of the ten songs here are Fielder's. A major thematic subtext of the album is signaled in its title. The emphasis throughout is cheerful, searching, and joyfully moody. Its optimism is captured by each of Fielder's song titles. This joyful mood is not associated with the gaudy crawl of one evening's passion. It reflects the glow of a grown man's love for friendships carefully chosen, caringly nurtured.
This ten song tour of the quartet's sweet brooding, one spring evening in balmy Southern California, gives permanence to the magic of restrained exuberance. We overhear four musicians at their radiant best. The optimism found throughout ROMANCE SERENADE, luckily, was captured by BluePort Records. It was scripted from amorous musical notations whose declaration of faith in the grand jazz tradition Dale Fielder's writing here pays homage to. That faith, its optimism, constructs a personal serenade of good feeling that reckons its fortune in the midst of life's fullness, for awhile, forever, with courage and artistic strength.
About the Artist
Dale Fielder has earned a position in the front ranks of saxaphonists on the West Coast over the span of the last ten-plus years. His quartets and large ensembles have played virtually every important venue on the coast. The Dale Fielder Quartet has enjoyed the spotlight at jazz festivals in Europe, Asia and the United States. Published critical accolades have showered Fielder with praise at an increasing frequency and with rising enthusiasm. All of this plots the skyward trajectory of an artist whose good taste and exceptional accomplishments as a player, and a composer, are at the height on this album, Fielder's second for BluePort and sixth overall.
