About the Artist
Art Johnson, Jazz guitarist and violinist, began to tour in the EU in 1974, Django's guitar work has always loomed in the background of Art's influences, but it sprang forward in 1995 when Art formed the Cool Club Quartet. The Cool Club Quartet first performed at San Diego's Horton Grand Hotel on June 10, 1995. The group, consummate pros, found their rehearsals prior to that date quickly bringing each musician to a collective wavelength. This tight team approach is needed to "bring off Gypsy Jazz with emotional feeling and a relaxed confidence that gets transmitted to the audiences." Richard Glick fineguitarconsultants.com After the 1995 date, each member went on to the variety of musical combinations and experiences that makes up the stuff of a professional career. All were involved with their own performing, teaching, composing, arranging, recording and touring. It was Art who got the idea to call the group back together. The group gave four stellar performances in San Diego. Bob Magnusson brings his world-class contribution to this Django-style homage, Chris Vitas executes his inspired violin solos over the top of some rock-solid rhythm guitar work of Bob Cartwright. Art now spends part time in the South of France, where, during the summer of 2002, he was playing all styles of music with some of the top musicians of the European scene today. Meeting with Birelli Lagrene at the Juan les Pins Jazz festival, and other top Gypsy Jazz players. Accepted into the Gypsy ensembles because of Art's adept technique in that style, the idea occurred to him to bring back the Cool Club Quartet when he made his next regular swing through our part of the world. He got the ball rolling, booked venues and radio interview performance to kick off. The group has had a smashing success bringing even more venues.
