About the Artist
Born in Philadelphia and relocated to Las Vegas as a boy Rocky is the son of jazz tenor saxophonist Irv Gordon (Caesar`s Palace House Band, Las Vegas, Minsky`s, Lido De Paris, Sinatra, Bennett), who also resides in Vegas.
Rocky started playing classical piano at an early age, only to move on to study drums under the direction of jazz big band great Irv Kluger. Rocky later studied composition, arranging and orchestration privately with Wes Hensel, who eventually became director of the arranging and orchestration department at Berklee in Boston.
Several years ago Rocky purchased a soprano saxophone, and fullfilled one of his lifelong ambitions, to play the saxophone.
"After years playing drums professionally, I needed a melodic instrument as an outlet for my love of jazz. I have always loved the saxophone, especially the soprano. Look, I am the son of a saxophonist. What would you expect? It`s a great living, breathing instrument for me when I play it. I am totally bonded with it, and it`s the most natural instrument I have ever played."
"I knew I could play the saxophone because I had the theory and ear training in my arsenal of knowledge. I have always been a songwriter, and I could also hum jazz solos based on my experience of listening to jazz greats for several years. I really don`t have one saxophonist I am influenced by. I have at least thirty."
Rocky holds endorsements with both Fibes Drums and E.M. Winston Saxophones, performing clinics for Winston around the country.
