Jeremy Seabrook argues that the diversity of cultures is threatened by the onslaught of global concentrations of power and wealth. Seabrook takes the case of Bengal, a culture with a rich tradition of song, dance, and drama still practiced by most villagers. Threatened by Western economic penetration, alien forms of religious fundamentalism, and the industrialized world's popular culture, many Bengalis are resisting this violent attack on their culture and traditions. It is in this light that Bangladesh can be seen as a microcosm for other threatened cultures.
