Book Description
Will Brooker, author of Batman Unmasked and Using the Force, turns his attention to Lewis Carroll and Alice. He takes the reader through a fascinating and revealing tour of late 20th Century popular culture, following Alice and her creator wherever they go. Brooker reveals the ways in which this iconic character has been used and adapted, taking in cartoons, movies, computer games, theme parks, heritage sites, novelisations, illustrations, biographies, theatrical performances, toys and other products, websites, fan clubs and much more. The result is a remarkable analysis of how one original creation has expanded over time to symbolize many different things to many different people.

From the Publisher
From the Introduction:

This is not, for the most part, a book about Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and Alice Pleasance Hargreaves, or even a book about Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell. It is, more accurately, a book about "Lewis Carroll" and "Alice", and the bundles of meaning attached to those names; the way those names function for us in the early 21st century, just over a hundred years since Carroll’s death and approximately one hundred and fifty since Alice Liddell’s birth.[1] It is based on the idea that Carroll and Alice currently circulate as cultural myths, cultural icons – often far removed from the historical figures of Alice Liddell and Charles Dodgson – and it investigates the contemporary role and meanings of these cultural icons through an analysis of texts about them.
