Padre João de Deus de Castro Lobo was born in the late eighteenth-century, the zenith of colonial creativity in Brazil. The Mass in D Minor is arguably his finest work. Although it shares similar characteristics with the Italian opera of the period, it retains a homophonic choral style, characteristic of Brazilian colonial music to this day.
