Book Description
In 1997, American women can look back on a century of tradition as professional composers of serious music in the United States. This tradition, which begins with Amy Bach -- more specifically, with her Gaelic Symphony -- now includes large numbers of women, from those born in the early years of this century to those barely in their thirties. It spans the mid-century with women of the generation emerging in the 1950s to those whose music began to come before the public in the 70s and 80s. It includes women both black and white, both academically oriented and in a class by themselves; those who cultivate electronic media and those who explore feminist or healing properties in music, those who write symphonies and those who write jazz. Finally, it now includes increasing numbers of women who have won America's top musical prizes for their efforts.
