About the Author
Yip Harburg (1896-1981) was born of Russian-Jewish immigrant parents of modest means. He graduated from City College, New York and ran an electrical appliance shop until the crash of 1929, when he launched his songwriting career. John Lahr, senior drama critic of The New Yorker, has written eighteen books and numerous plays, most recently the Tony Award-winning Elaine Stritch at Liberty.
